October - National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Love Shouldn’t Hurt
Domestic Violence is defined
as two people in an intimate
relationship and one person
uses a pattern of coercion
and control against the other
person during the relationship
and/or after the relationship
has terminated. It often includes physical, sexual, emotional, or economic abuse.
According to the National
Coalition Against Domestic
Violence (NCADV) one in
every four women will experience domestic violence in her
lifetime. National statistics
estimate that 1.3 million
women are physically abused
by an intimate partner each
year. Intimate partner vioINSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Renovation and Expansion Project
The Shelter Home Board of Directors and Staff are preparing for the first major
Renovation and Expansion campaign of the existing Shelter building since the
structure was built in 1988. A Capital Improvement Campaign is underway to
complete the funding needed to provide a full renovation of the existing 4,500
square foot shelter, and to expand the resident capacity with new construction to the current facility. The Shelter has steadily stayed at and sometimes over capacity during 2010. With the help of two
funding sources, the campaign is halfway there. Join the Board, Staff and Donors who have already donated to make the Shelter Home’s facelift for 2011a reality that will Renovate the existing facility, Refresh the atmosphere and the function of the facility with new space, and Renew a commitment to the
victims that this community has commissioned the Shelter Home to serve for more than three decades.

October is Domestic Violence
Awareness Month
Some of the activities we have planned for this month:
Thursday, October 14th - Domestic Violence Memorial Vigil
Raise The Roof
By Jan Smith
“Raise
the Roof”
2010 was
a great
success
for the
Shelter Home of Caldwell County.
For 24 hours, staff of the shelter
along with law enforcement officers, judicial officials, attorneys
and community members sat on the
roof top of Lenoir Police Department to raise awareness and to
raise money for the Shelter to be
able to provide activities for October which is Domestic Violence
awareness month. Domestic violence is something that we deal
with 24 hours a day and we wanted
to show the community that we are
dedicated to putting a stop to it.
The grand total we raised was
$2,150.00. We would like to thank
all that participated and to those
that showed their support. Thank
you to FATZ and Sagebrush for
feeding the Roof Raisers !
6:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church Christian Life
Center in Lenoir, NC. The event is open to the public and includes dinner and a candlelight service honoring the victims
who have lost their lives to domestic violence this year.
Tammy Wright will be the guest speaker and the Harper
School of Music will be providing music.
With the help of the Clerk of Court’s Office, the District Attorneys Office, and the Shelter Home Staff, breakfast will be
provided each Wednesday morning in October for
domestic violence victims who are in court.
Cut this out
and take it
to Texas
Roadhouse
on October
28th!!!

The Number Cruncher & Our Saving Grace - Dodie May
Dodie May is the Business Manager for
the Shelter Home of Caldwell County.
She has been employed here for a little
over two years. Her main responsibility
is to be sure the grant cost reports are
filed in a timely manner every month.
She also handles the Accounts Payable,
Payroll, makes bank deposits and keeps
track of the bank balances. Dodie prepares various reports for the Executive
Director, Treasurer and the Board of
Directors. Recently, she has started
managing the Shelter Home's E-bay
account. For those of you who do not
know, the Shelter Home takes items that
have been donated that they think might
interest E-bay customers, and tries to
sell them on E-Bay. Dodie is in charge
of these listings and watches them in
hopes of selling those items to benefit
the Shelter Home. And if Dodie didn't
already do enough, she also manages
day-to-day maintenance issues that arise
such as a leaky sink or a light not working.
She maintains a list of all the things that
need to be fixed and arranges for them to
be worked on so that the Shelter Home
continues to run smoothly. Dodie even
steps in to help fellow staff members when
computer problems come about.
Dodie previously worked as a Customer
Service Representative for Volex, Inc.,
which is an international firm manufacturing
wiring harnesses for industry. She was the
liaison between the sales force, the customers and manufacturing. Before Volex, Inc.
she attempted to sell insurance, which she
states was definitely NOT a good fit for
her!! Before that she was the office manager for Robert M. Gragg & Sons Nursery
but this position also included 4 or 5 other
businesses owned by the Gragg family.
She did all of the invoicing, payroll, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable,
scheduled trucks and one time she even
