IRVINE, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2010) - The University of California, Irvine Extension today announced the availability of a new online course titled, “ Patent Law and Procedure:
Preparation, Prosecution and Beyond ” for the upcoming Winter quarter. Course instructor,
Jason Far-hadian, Esq., will offer critical knowledge and provide a comprehensive plan on how to prepare, draft, file and prosecute patent applications before the United States Patent and
Trademark Office. Although the course is designed for paralegals, CEOs, CTOs, entrepreneurs, inventors, attorneys and professionals that manage or oversee the patent application process for a company, participants in all fields will also benefit from the practical skills taught in this course.
With registration taking place now, the eight-week intensive course begins on Jan. 13, 2011.
“Companies need to be aware of the consequences of not having the right protections in place for new technologies and innovations,” said Tom Pokladowski, Esq., program director of
UC Irvine Extension paralegal and legal programs.
“In such a competitive business environment, companies that are updated on the latest patent law details are the ones that have an upper hand and will succeed.”
Participants taking the course will gain insights on the means, procedures and standards of communication with the U.S. Patent Office. Other topics that will be covered include: fundamentals of patent law, emerging issues in the field of patent law in domestic and international forums, pitfalls to avoid while prosecuting a patent applications and timeliness and strategy for preparing and filing a response to a rejection. At the end of the course, students will understand how a patent application is drafted, filed and prosecuted toward a successful grant.
Course instructor, Far-hadian, is a member of the California Bar and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. He is also a managing partner at Century IP
Group, a company that provides client counseling in all aspects of intellectual property law with an emphasis on prosecution and management of domestic and international patent and trademark portfolios for emerging and Fortune 500 companies. Far-hadian received his juris doctorate from
Loyola Law School in 1995 and a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science and engineering in 1992.

“Patent Law and Procedure: Preparation, Prosecution and Beyond” is offered as an elective course in UC Irvine Extension’s American Bar Association approved Paralegal
Certificate Program .
