PAINTERS + DESIGNERS + ARCHITECTS + DULUX | NEW ZEALAND’S MARKET LEADING PAINT COMPANY Q2 : 2007 | ISSUE #3 THE NEW DOWSE ART MUSEUM. Dulux has an ongoing sponsorship with The New Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt, and given that interior colours are changed with each new exhibition (about every three to six months) the partnership is an important one. The New Dowse, completed early this year, is a bold new presence on the face of the city. Athfield Architects have created a stunning and prominent civic building which amalgamates both new and existing structures into a coherent whole. The New Dowse maximises the physical impact of this high profile building with its striking perforated metallic façade Rainscreen – acting as a catalyst for the direction of the city centre’s urban renewal. The two original buildings of the Dowse, circa 1970 and 1980 have been linked with the new building, which increases gallery space by 60 percent and includes a new café and retail space. An elevated front and boxed over entry features a white fibre cement wall that has been embedded with reflective roadmarking beads. (Roadmarking beads are like coarse sand embedded in the paint. The idea is that it will glisten in the sun and sparkle by night.) “It is quite experimental,” says architect Nick Mouat. “We are not sure how long it will last but we’ve been wanting to use it on a number of projects and the Dowse gave us the perfect opportunity to try it.” Athfield Architects plan was the winner of the 2000 NZ Institute of Architects Dowse competition. It was a building that should have been condemned years ago, according to its manager Barry McDonald, but after a $1.4m refurbishment, Wellington’s Night Shelter is looking absolutely positively terrific. “All the rooms are painted in different colours and it looks really great,” Mr McDonald said. Dulux donated approximately 350 litres of paint, and Paul Reddish Decorators donated labour. Fletcher Construction carried out the total interior rebuild, but took no profit from the job, and all other suppliers, contractors and consultants involved in the refurbishment worked at heavily discounted rates. The Night Shelter has been a refuge for the city’s homeless since 1969. But time had taken its toll, and a major upgrade was in order. “The shelter was in an appalling condition. It was so bad, there were open drains near the beds and thick black mould on the ceilings,” said architect Malcolm Perry. “The building had to be completely ripped apart and re-done.” The redefinition of spaces and building of new rooms has provided a much greater capacity. The shelter can now sleep 45 in the comfort of a ‘mid-range motel’. “It is very much appreciated, it has made a huge difference,” said Mr McDonald. Dulux is proud to be a Team Supplier to Emirates Team New Zealand as the big red spinnakers are back on the water at Valencia. After flying the race yachts from New Zealand, the team’s sailing programme resumed on March 5. The emphasis of this final phase of preparations for the America’s Cup Challenge is on race preparation and gaining more knowledge of Valencia conditions. Informal racing against other syndicates is an established part of team training. << DULUX FEATURE COLOUR Dulux 140 North Cape Dulux 139 Oriental Bay Dulux 1 Mt Aspiring “It’s all part of turning up the heat another notch or two,” Grant Dalton says. “We expect some tough racing out there. It may be informal but it is run strictly on America’s Cup match racing rules and all teams are determined to do well as they all get into the groove that will take them into the fleet racing regatta which started on April 3. “These races are not about results. We get a close look at the opposition hardware and crew work developments since July last year. It also keeps our sailing crew sharp while we get to know more about the Valencian breeze and sea state under race conditions. The Dulux role as a Team Supplier continues for the duration of the America’s Cup campaign. MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION – WAIKATO. Dulux, Master Painters and Master Builders have collaborated to provide a new show home and office for Master Builders Waikato. Dulux were pleased to supply interior paint and exterior coating products; Master Painters Association Waikato supplied volunteers for the painting and Master Builders have a stunning new show home, office and meeting room for its members. Situated in northeast Hamilton, the house is designed to capture all day sun, with a layout that is spacious, attractive and liveable. Colours were chosen by Estilo Interior Design, who were involved with the project from the beginning. “We are delighted with the overall effect of the paint colours throughout the house,” said designer Janet Bedford. “They are fresh, appealing and interesting and complement the attractive layout and design.” When considering the paint scheme, the designers took into account two characteristics unique to the house. Firstly that it would be open for a period of three years, which meant the colour scheme had to look fresh, modern and appealing now and also in three years time when it will be sold. Secondly, the builder wanted to use different coloured joinery for the exterior surfaces. Therefore, for those parts of the house that are linea board, painted in Dulux Glenbrook, joinery was chosen to match as closely as possible. For the plaster, painted Dulux Half Sandy Day, joinery was selected to coordinate with this pale shade. “This has the effect of maximizing blocks of colour on the outside of the house with no visual distraction being provided by the joinery. However, it meant we had to be aware when picking colours for the interior whether individual rooms had light or dark joinery.” Designer Janet Bedford, Estilo Interiors Painting Contractor Master Painters Association Waikato Products Used Dulux Wash & Wear, Dulux Aquanamel, Dulux Acratex over Hebel and plaster brick Colours Exterior: Dulux Glenbrook, Dulux Half Sandy Day Interior: Dulux Half Sandy Day, Dulux Blackball, Dulux Parnell, Dulux Pukaki, Dulux Ohai. A country residential property in Clevedon, south of Auckland, is an example of excellence in plastering and tiling, Dulux Texture Coatings Manager John Dobier says. The job was completed by Cor Van Esch Solid Plastering and Tilers Ltd in December last year. “Cor’s workmanship is to a very, very high standard. In the future we are looking at creating an Applicator and House of the Year Award for textures which will be open to the whole country, and houses finished to this standard would be in strong contention for the award.” Designer Paul Davies Design WINTEC DULUX COLOUR AWARD WINNER Dulux is a proud supporter of the Interior Design school at WINTEC (Waikato Institute of Technology), and sponsor of the WINTEC Dulux Colour Award, now in its third year. The Council was formed in July 2005, gained membership to the World Green Building Council in July 2006, and ran a very successful launch tour in November last year, leading to an explosion of interest in green building. The Council’s role is to lead the building industry into the 21st Century by focussing on ways to minimise New Zealand’s carbon footprint. The building industry is responsible for about 10 percent of national CO2 emissions, and around 40 percent of landfill waste. Congratulations to Martin Donnithorne, of Don Donnithorne Architects Ltd, Christchurch, who won an Apple ipod Shuffle from the competition in Issue 2. To encourage architects, specifiers, etc to consider environmentally friendly options in their designs, NZGBC has developed “Green Star NZ” – a rating tool that assesses building projects under eight environmental impact categories: energy, transport, land use and ecology, water, indoor air quality, emissions, materials and management. Green Star NZ was officially launched on April 4. As well as offering formal certification of a building project’s environmental performance (with ratings of four, five or six stars), the rating tool can also be used as a design guide to track and improve performance. www.nzgbc.org.nz Dulux is proud to be a supplier to Emirates Team New Zealand. Burwood Hospital’s new $21 million operating theatre complex and entrance – part of the overall redevelopment of the hospital – features Dulux products and colours to give a fresh, non-clinical feel to the building. Designed by architects Sheppard & Rout of Christchurch, the new building references the earlier Stage 1 development and some of the existing older brick clad buildings on the campus. Comprising another ward, theatre block incorporating admission and recovery, TSSU (Theatre Sterile Supply Unit) and SCU (Special Care Unit), and entry, the project was broken into three building types, all closely linked together, and the existing concourse was extended. The client, Canterbury District Health Board, and the architects, wanted to maintain a patient friendly, non-clinical perception, as introduced in the Stage 1 buildings. Painted feature walls and bright exterior accents convey a residential feeling, to encourage patients to feel more relaxed and to advance rehabilitation. Jeremy Spencer, of Spencer Painters & Decorators was contracted and tied up for almost a year on the project. Only Dulux products and colours were chosen for the hospital.
