AWARENESS:
Food allergy is on the increase in Australia, in fact worldwide
❱
1 – 2% of Australian adults have a food allergy
❱
10% of infants aged 1 year have a food allergy
❱
In an already diagnosed person, symptoms of a food
allergic reaction are usually obvious and generally occur
within 30 minutes of eating the food. Anaphylaxis may
present as a sudden severe asthma attack which may
make food allergic reaction less obvious.

AVOIDANCE
❱
There is no cure for food allergy - avoidance of the
food is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction.
❱
Small amounts of the food can trigger a reaction.
❱
Reading food labels and asking about food
allergen content is essential.
❱
Community support and awareness helps prevent reactions.

❱
Progression of an allergic reaction can be unpredictable.
Often an allergic reaction starts with skin symptoms such as hives
or facial swelling but people can suddenly have breathing difficulty or
collapse, even without early or mild symptoms
Be prepared. Know the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction
Know where your friends/colleagues ASCIA Action Plan and adrenaline
autoinjector is kept.
Know what to do in an emergency situation.

ACTION
Adrenaline is essential first aid treatment of anaphylaxis
❱
Adrenaline autoinjectors contain a single, pre-measured dose of adrenaline.
They have been designed to be given by non-medical people such as a friend,
teacher, childcare worker, parent, passer-by or by the patient themselves
(if able and not too unwell to do so).
❱
Adrenaline works rapidly to reverse the life threatening signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis
❱
There are 2 brands of adrenaline autoinjectors available in Australia and New Zealand:
❱❱
EpiPen adrenaline autoinjectors (EpiPen®Jr and EpiPen® )
❱❱
Anapen adrenaline autoinjectors (Anapen®Jr and Anapen®)
The Jr autoinjectors are prescribed for children between 10-20kg and the other for
children and adults weighing more than 20kg.

A few more things to know:
❱
❱
❱
❱
❱
❱
Take food allergy seriously. Inform those around you
Follow instruction on the ASCIA Action Plan.
Don’t expect a person experiencing anaphylaxis to face it alone.
Their thinking can become unclear and they may not be able to
administer their adrenaline autoinjector (EpiPen/ Anapen) themselves.
Lay the person flat, if breathing is difficult, let them sit.
Do NOT let the person stand or walk.
Once adrenaline is administered call 000
If in doubt, give the person their adrenaline autoinjector.
Adrenaline saves lives. Deaths are rare but those who die from
anaphylaxis often receive no adrenaline or, if it is administered,
often it is administered too late after the onset of a severe reaction.
