Knowledge Exchange e-Resources Project for New Secondary School Liberal
Studies
The Hong Kong University Press will provide a range of free digital resource for
students and teachers of Liberal Studies under the New Hong Kong Senior
Secondary School Curriculum. The digital resource will be available at a new
portal jointly developed by the Press and Hong Kong Education City launched
on 1 June 2010.
“Society & Culture: Life in Hong Kong under ‘One Country, Two Systems’” is
one of the compulsory parts of the NSS Liberal Studies curriculum.
Students
need to collect, analyse and discuss topics relating to the Basic Law,
legal-political system, and socio-economic conditions in Hong Kong. The
new curriculum also adopts an “issue-enquiry approach”, through which
students are required to develop their own views, construct personal
knowledge, and become critical thinkers.
Although many resources are available on the internet and through other
channels, authoritative, research-oriented, credited and copyright-free
resources are lacking.
With the support of the Knowledge Exchange Fund of
the University Grant Committee, the Hong Kong University Press has converted
32 English books into digital resource, on subjects ranging from politics and
sociology to public health, education and social work.
The digital resource
will be hosted in Hong Kong Education City and will be freely accessible to
senior secondary school teachers and students in Hong Kong. Teachers and
students can use the copyright-free content on the HKEdCity portal
(www.hkedcity.net) for their Liberal Studies projects and for general study.
In order to announce this important Knowledge Exchange Project by the
University of Hong Kong, Professor John Bacon-Shone, Associate Director of
the Knowledge Exchange Office, Ms Ng MeiMei, Executive Director of Hong
Kong Education City, and Mr Michael Duckworth, Publisher of Hong Kong
University Press will co-host a press conference on 10 June 2010, 2:30 pm in
Room G07, Main Building, The University of Hong Kong.
