An Ideal Study-Abroad Opportunity
With a Business Focus
Gain the educational foundation you need to pursue a
career or advanced study in business with UC Berkeley
Extension’s Fundamental Studies in Business and
Entrepreneurship (FSBE) program. Whether you need a
study-abroad experience to complete a four-year-degree
requirement or simply want general knowledge of
business practices, FSBE is the ideal study-abroad option
before entering the workforce or attending graduate
programs in the United States.
You don’t need previous business or work experience
to apply—the program is open to recent university
graduates and upper-level undergraduates. Choose one
semester, two semesters (one academic year) or the
spring semester plus summer internship. Whichever you
choose, you earn a business-education credential that
signifies a high-caliber, in-depth sequence of courses.

Fall Semester: Essentials of Business
Build a foundation in the concepts and practices essential for doing business in
the United States and abroad. From examining various levels of management
and their fiscal responsibility to studying organizations’ economic decisionmaking processes, you acquire a fundamental understanding of business
theories, skills and terms. You also study marketing concepts as they relate
to the global marketplace, the competitive environment, the consumer, and
the use of technology to promote products and services. By the end of the
semester, you know what it takes to be an effective manager, recognize the
importance of business ethics and corporate social responsibility, and improve
your business presentation and communication skills.
Required Courses
Essentials of Business
Get an introduction to the goals, processes and operations of business
enterprises in the United States. Your focus is on the functions that a
company—whether a multinational corporation or a corner grocery store—
must manage effectively to be successful. You also study the legal environment
in which businesses operate and the importance of business ethics and
corporate citizenship.
Applied Economics for Business
Welcome to the study of microeconomics, including the theory of supply
and demand and the use of that theory to explain market functions. Get an
introduction to different market structures and their relationship to market
performance and efficiency. Explore topics such as limitations of the market
system and public policy’s effects on markets, international trade and finance.
Prescribed Electives
Global Business Communication: Writing and Speaking
Two courses are offered each fall. Sample topics include:
Strengthen your written and oral communications skills for the global business

Spring Semester: Entrepreneurship
Essentials of Business (fall semester) is not a prerequisite for Entrepreneurship.
As you consider your future and the possibility of operating a personal or family
business, learn what it takes to successfully launch a small business venture. Recognize
entrepreneurial opportunities, challenges and rewards, and immerse yourself in skills
and terminology pertinent to the business sector. In addition to studying the financial
options for a new endeavor—as well as the economic decision-making process
for small to midsize businesses—you learn marketing strategies for launching new
products and services, explore human resource management and business ethics, and
understand the requirements to establish a business.
Required Courses
Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Opportunity Recognition
Learn how to become a successful entrepreneur and avoid common pitfalls. By
exploring your own entrepreneurial strengths and weaknesses, you gain a foundation
in how to build your business. Prepare to define and refine the idea, develop the
opportunity, and deliver the business venture planning. You also learn the importance
of the business plan as preparation for launching a business venture, managing the
business and obtaining investor dollars.
Finances for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners
Every budding entrepreneur or small business owner needs to know how to read basic
financial statements; understand product costing, initial profit-and-loss development
and break-even analysis; manage cash flow; and comprehend various revenue
models. In a hands-on environment, you learn how to use integrated Microsoft Excel
spreadsheets to develop practical financial projections that can immediately impact
business operations.
Leadership for Entrepreneurs
Starting a new successful business involves more than a technology or service
idea and a business plan. To survive, the entrepreneurial leader must adjust both
focus and leadership style as the company moves from startup to development of
infrastructure and finally to enterprise. By examining the leadership qualities of successful
entrepreneurs, you understand how they proactively adapt their focus and leadership
styles to enhance the growth potential of their businesses.
Marketing Strategies for Entrepreneurs
Study marketing concepts, terminology and practices essential to launching
entrepreneurial endeavors and creating successful marketing strategies. Understand the
influence of branding and the importance of consumer behavior and buying power, and
learn to use Web 2.0 and social-media tools, video marketing, search engine marketing
and optimization, viral marketing, email marketing, event marketing and more. Gain a
wealth of practical, executable and affordable strategies to deliver tangible results.

Summer Internship Opportunity
Prescribed Electives
Three courses are offered each spring. Sample
topics include:
If you complete the spring-semester Entrepreneurship program, you
are eligible for the FSBE summer internship at a Bay Area business.
To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:
• Building, Presenting and Executing a Business Plan
• Have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher in
your FSBE coursework, and maintain a grade of C or higher in
all FSBE courses.
• Business Negotiating
• Organization and Management
• Strategic Marketing 2.0—Social Media and
Other Innovative Technologies
• Be a student in good standing throughout the duration of
the program.
An internship coordinator assists you throughout the placement
process as you attend an internship orientation, create a résumé and
develop your interviewing skills.
Securing the internship requires interviewing for the position,
just as you would interview for a full-time job. Once you obtain
an internship, a program adviser ensures you meet the program’s
academic requirements. In addition, an internship site supervisor
monitors your performance and attendance throughout the twomonth internship experience.
Your internship is unpaid and considered an academic program: You
earn academic credits for your participation and maintain your status
as a full-time student.

notified at least 15 days before the scheduled start date and offered
alternative study arrangements if available; otherwise, you will be
given a full refund. If your F-1 visa application is denied after you
have been accepted to FSBE, you will receive a full refund of your
program fee.
Your acceptance packet includes the Certificate of Eligibility (I-20)

Studying at UC Berkeley Extension places you in the heart of downtown Berkeley, a dynamic community
that is part of the larger San Francisco Bay Area. Here, you’ll meet enthusiastic and accepting
professionals who are committed to achieving their dreams. The city boasts a “melting pot” of traditions
