Craven Cottage – Fulham FC
The Hurlingham Club
Craven Cottage, situated at the
north end of Bishop’s Park, is the
home of Fulham FC – London’s
oldest professional football club,
founded in 1879. The ground takes
its name from an 18th century
cottage that once stood there,
and was owned by Lord Craven.
Despite many renovations, the
south-east corner of the pavilion
retains its ‘cottage’ style and is now
Grade II listed.
Located in Fulham, the Hurlingham Club is an
exclusive members-only sports and social club set in
42 acres of grounds along the banks of the Thames.
The house was originally built by Dr. William
Cadogan in 1760, but in 1869, the Hurlingham Club
was founded to hold pigeon shooting competitions
in the grounds. By 1874, the club began hosting polo
matches, soon becoming the official headquarters for
polo throughout the entire British Empire – a role for
which is it now famous. The club currently has more
than 10,000 members and a rumoured 10 year waiting
list for membership.

The Hammersmith Bridge links
the Thames from Hammersmith
in the North to Barnes and

present structure, designed by
Sir Joseph Bazalgette, opened

London’s first suspension bridge.
Its green and gold paintwork is a
tribute to the London department

owned a furniture depository in
Barnes (now converted into luxury
accommodation). The bridge is also
a notable landmark on the annual

The Lyric
Royal Albert Hall
In its hundred year history, The Lyric theatre on King
Street has welcomed some of the world’s finest writers,
directors, actors and theatre companies to its stages,
including Harold Pinter, Sir John Gielgud, Robert
Lepage, Complicite and Frantic Assembly. The Lyric
aims to produce refreshingly bold shows with emerging
artists. It’s also one of the busiest theatres – with over
1000 performances a year.
The Royal Albert Hall is one of the UK’s most
treasured and distinguished buildings. Since its
opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the hall has played
host to some of the world’s leading classical artists.
However, it is probably best known for hosting the
hugely popular annual BBC Summer Proms. Recently,
the venue has played host to a production of the ballet,
Swan Lake, the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Prom,
and concerts by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Natural History Museum
Royal Court Theatre
Set in one of London’s landmark buildings, The
Natural History Museum is home to over 70 million
specimens and specialises in taxonomy, identification
and conservation within the five categories of Botany,
Entomology, Mineralogy, Paleontology and Zoology.
If that all sounds too highbrow – just take a look at
the legendary dinosaur skeletons – a sight worth going
for alone.
The Royal Court Theatre was Britain’s first national
theatre company, and its challenging plays ensure
that it has a reputation as a real ‘writer’s theatre’.
In fact, when John Osbourne’s ‘Look Back In Anger’
premiered at the Royal Court in 1956, the theatre
became the birthplace of ‘kitchen sink’ drama resulting
in the New York Times declaring it as “the most
important theatre in Europe”.

Kensington Gardens
Kensington Gardens was an area of land originally
carved off the nearby Hyde Park by King William
III to create a private garden for Kensington Palace.
Arranged in formal avenues of mature trees and
ornamental flowerbeds, the park is famous for Queen
Victoria’s iconic Albert Memorial tribute to her
husband; the Serpentine Gallery; and Serpentine lake,
where the swimming club brave it out; and the Diana,
Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain.
Holland Park
Kew Gardens
Considered to be one of the most romantic parks
in London, Holland Park has a number of secluded
formal gardens around the ruins of the old Holland

The Royal Botanical Gardens at

Ravenscourt Park
Richmond Park
Ravenscourt Park is one of
Hammersmith’s flagship parks.
The 23 acre open space combines
attractive landscaping and wildlife
habitats. The family-friendly leisure
facilities for local residents include:
a wide variety of play equipment,
tennis, netball and basketball
courts, football pitch and bowling
green. Make sure to visit the
charming Fait Maison In The Park
- a teahouse which sells famously
healthy salads alongside infamously
naughty cakes.
Once a royal hunting ground,
Richmond Park, south of the
Thames, continues to be famous for
its woodland herd of wild red and
fallow deer. The park has protected
views of St. Paul’s Cathedral from
King Henry’s Mound – the spot
where King Henry VIII stood in
1536 to watch a rocket fired from
the Tower of London, signalling the
execution of Anne Boleyn. Horse
riding is popular, and resident Shire
horses Billy and Massey do a good
job of keeping grass levels down

Bordering the Thames at nearby

the London Wetlands are

The King's Road
In the 1960s, this thoroughfare gained a reputation
for counterculture with far-out fashion, and the 1970s
brought Punk Rock, with Malcolm McLaren’s Let
It Rock shop and the launch of the Sex Pistols. Since
then, this well-to-do route has become one of the most
exclusive shopping destinations in the world and is
a magnet for all things fashion.
