The ground takes its name from an 18th century cottage that once stood there, and was owned by Lord Craven. Despite many renovations, the south-east corner of the pavilion retains its ‘cottage’ style and is now Grade II listed. Located in Fulham, the Hurlingham Club is an exclusive members-only sports and social club set in 42 acres of grounds along the banks of the Thames. The house was originally built by Dr. William Cadogan in 1760, but in 1869, the Hurlingham Club was founded to hold pigeon shooting competitions in the grounds. The current gothic style church was built in 1883 on the site of the parish’s first ever chapel. In recent years, the church has been fully restored inside and out and now houses the cosy little ‘Café of The Green’. Founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the V&A is the worlds largest museum. Arranged in formal avenues of mature trees and ornamental flowerbeds, the park is famous for Queen Victoria’s iconic Albert Memorial tribute to her husband; the Serpentine Gallery; and Serpentine lake, where the swimming club brave it out; and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. Holland Park Kew Gardens Considered to be one of the most romantic parks in London, Holland Park has a number of secluded formal gardens around the ruins of the old Holland House, as well as a large semi-wild woodland and meadow area. There is also an Orangery, cricket pitch, tennis court and giant chess set – as well an impressive muster of rather stunning but rather vain peacocks. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew are probably the most famous gardens in the world, so it’s no wonder the park has been made an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can explore 300 acres and 250 years of history, climb up to the treetops, investigate man-made rainforests or be stunned by the iconic Glasshouse Collection of weird and wonderful plants. The 23 acre open space combines attractive landscaping and wildlife habitats. Make sure to visit the charming Fait Maison In The Park - a teahouse which sells famously healthy salads alongside infamously naughty cakes. Once a royal hunting ground, Richmond Park, south of the Thames, continues to be famous for its woodland herd of wild red and fallow deer. The park has protected views of St. Paul’s Cathedral from King Henry’s Mound – the spot where King Henry VIII stood in 1536 to watch a rocket fired from the Tower of London, signalling the execution of Anne Boleyn. Originally landscaped by Capability Brown in 1760, the 200 acre parkland is renowned for its collection of rare trees and its Great Conservatory, which provided the architectural inspiration for the Crystal Palace in the Great Exhibition of 1851. Tucked away into the loop of the Thames opposite Hammersmith, the London Wetlands are recognised as a site of major scientific interest due to the unique habitat for wetland animals and birds.
