SCHOOL NEWS
From the Principal’s Desk—
April 2015
Welcome back, I hope you had a great spring break!
On Tuesday April 21st the One World Taiko Japanese Drummers
performed for our Pre K-4 students. The group performed several
songs that they had created and gave our students some
background information on the meaning behind each piece. The
performers also taught our students some Japanese language. But
by far the most exciting part was seeing some of our students
partner with the performers for the final act. A sample of this
performance can be viewed online by visiting our LES webpage.
Please know families and community members are always
welcome to attend these shows and we would love to have you
visit.
From April 27th-May 8th our Grade 3 and 4 students will be
engaged in the Smarter Balanced Testing. Recently students
in Grades K- 4 completed their spring benchmark testing on
the NWEA platform. We are all so proud of the effort the
students put forth on these tests and look forward to
reviewing the assessment data to see the growth they have
made.
Progress reports for the 3rd trimester will be coming home on
May 8th
Pre K screening- The preschool team at Lebanon
Elementary School conducts developmental screenings for
children ages three and four. Motor, language, concepts, selfhelp, and social-emotional skills are assessed and results
from the assessment are used to make enrollment decisions
and provide baseline data on the students’ skill level.
The Lebanon Elementary School spring preschool screening
is scheduled for May 15, 2015 from 8:30-12:30. There will
be no preschool sessions on this date.
Kindergarten Orientation- Orientation for the families of
incoming kindergarten students (fall 2015) will be on June 1 st at
6:00 in the LES Library. This will be a great time for families to
get more information about our wonderful full day program as
well as meet our talented group of teachers. Hope to see you there!
VIP Day- LES staff and I are excited to announce Very Important
Person day. Each student from every grade level will be allowed
to invite one person to spend a portion of their school day with
them. Each grade level will be doing a special activity with the
VIP. We hope that this annual event will be an enjoyable way to
involve family and/or friends at LES. Please be on the lookout for
a VIP invitation.
THE READING CORNER
Here's a way to help your child with reading comprehension
by using TV shows or movies. When an advertisement
comes on (or you pause a movie), have your child summarize
what has happened so far and predict what will happen next.
Discuss the character's feelings in different situations. Most
stories are character driven and the main character learns
something by the end of the story. If you watch non-fiction
shows, ask your child for two things they learned after
watching the show. These skills are transferable to reading
and will help your child when reviewing texts.
As always, keep reading!

From Mrs. Ladegard- SAVE THAT CHANGE!!!
The LES Coins for Cancer Challenge will begin on Monday, May
18th and go through Friday, May 22nd. All change collected will
be donated to the American Cancer Society’s, Relay for Life.
Change will be collected and recorded daily by Mrs. Ladegard’s
4th grade class. This challenge is for students in grades PreK-4.
The class with the most change (weight wise) at the end of the
week will win an ice cream party!
Thank you for your support and enthusiasm! Let’s work together
toward a great cause!
MAY IS ...
A blue sky shot with sunbeams,
Green shadows 'neath the trees,
The caroling of many birds,
A gentle, soft, warm breeze.
From Mrs. ShumanAttention all third grade families! We are so excited to present
our concert on Thursday, May 21st at 6:30pm. Students will meet
Mrs. Shuman in the cafeteria at 6:15 wearing their “best clothes”.
We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on!
Thank you!
Additionally, these students will travel to the Lebanon Senior
Center to perform for locals on Tuesday May 26 th.
Each flowering shrub a beautiful
Gigantic sweet bouquet,
In the month of birds and flowers,
Fragrant, lovely, merry May.

A truly gorgeous sight.
AN IDIOM TO SHARE
"Tip of the iceberg"
Meaning: just a small part of a larger problem or a worse
situation
Origin: An iceberg is a huge body of ice that has broken
away from a glacier and is floating in the ocean. This is a
well-known 20th century metaphor that points out that the
top is only a tiny part of a mountain of floating ice. An
estimated 90% of an iceberg is hidden underwater.
A JOKE TO SHARE
Q. Why couldn't the pirate play cards?
A. Because he was sitting on the deck!
Children’s Book Week
Next week, May 4-8th, all grades will be celebrating
Children’s Book Week. We’ll have an entire week of
engaging activities to get the students excited about books
and reading.
Monday: Classroom doors will be decorated with a reading
theme.
Tuesday: Wear something you can read.
Wednesday: Buddy reading!
Thursday: DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read)

“10 Lessons the Arts Teach” (From the website:

When children make art, the lessons they learn go far beyond the
art activity. Making art encourages the development of the types
of skills that can reap positive
effects in academic learning, social
skills, communication skills and
fine motor skills. According a
2005 presentation by the U.S.
Department of Education, research
shows that students who study the
arts do better in reading, writing
and math, and that studying art
helps children to develop critical
thinking skills and encourages
cultural awareness and
understanding.

There are two upcoming events happening in our art department
this month:
May 20 – Mayfest Art Show Visit to LMHS for 2nd, 3rd and 4th
graders
May 22 – LES Annual Ice Cream Social to celebrate our student
artists, 3:30 pm-5:00 pm
More information about both events will be sent home by your
teachers in May. We have been busy creating beautiful artwork in
all grades. Here are some questions you can ask your child to find
out more about his/her art… The fourth graders are learning about
Eastern culture with the creation of their Nava Ratnas. Questions
to ask: What is a Nava Ratna? Where does the term originate
from? How do the planets relate to the Nava Ratna? The third
graders are planning to apply glaze and Aboriginal designs to their
reptiles. Questions to ask: Where do Aborigines live? How do
they relate to Native American Indians? Describe the kind of
artwork made by Aborigines? The second graders just finished
their clay owls. Questions to ask: What shapes do you cut out of
clay to make an owl? How do you attach clay together? What is
the straw for? How do you apply glaze to an owl? The first
graders are drawing their Van Gogh still lifes. Questions to ask:
What is included in your still life? How can you make different
flowers? What is the best way to use Craypa crayons?
Kindergarteners just finished their weavings. Questions to ask:
Describe weaving? What is the eye of the needle and what do you
use it for? How can you weave in beads and feathers? Afternoon
Preschool are making their very own “Starry, Starry Night”
collage. Questions to ask: Who painted “Starry Night”? Describe
the sky. How do you apply paint for the sky, fire, and
mountains?” What makes “Starry Night” look like nighttime? I
hope this helps to have your children talk about their art in a more
specific way!
Please come in and see the artwork displayed throughout our
hallways. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any
questions or concerns at barbara.lee@lebanonct.org
