Chapter Three, Educational Planning, UC Berkeley, College of Letters & Science Breadth Requirements 3. Foreign Language You may satisfy this requirement with one of the following: • Completion of one of the following courses at CCC: Chinese 121 French 121 Japanese 121 Spanish 121 • A score of 550 on the SAT II Foreign Language Subject Exam, if it was taken before May 1995. • A score of 590 on the SAT II Subject Exam, if it was taken May 1995 or later. • A score of 3 or better on the Foreign Language AP Exam. • A “C” or better on the General Certificate Exam “A” or “O” Level Foreign Language Exam. • A course comparable to the third year of a foreign language in High School. College of Letters & Science Requirements, for junior transfer students admitted Fall 1996 or thereafter. Essential Skills and Breadth Requirements The UC Berkeley College of Letters & Science has two sets of requirements. Essential Skills and Seven-Course Breadth. Completion of IGETC, as certified by Contra Costa College, waives both of these requirements. A. Essential Skills You must demonstrate essential skills in the following three specified areas before you enter UC Berkeley. All courses taken to satisfy the Essential Skills Requirements must be completed with a grade of C- or better. 1. Reading and Composition You may satisfy this requirement with one of the following: • Completion of two courses, English 1A and English 1B or English 1C. • A score of 5 on the IB Higher Level Exam in English Language A1 Credential exam • A score of 5 on the AP exam in English Literature & Composition. • A grade of C or better on the General Certificate Exam “A” Level English exam You may satisfy the first half only of this requirement with: • A score of 4 on the AP Exam in English Literature & Composition, or • A score of 4 or 5 on the AP Exam in English Language & Composition. 2. Quantitative Reasoning You may satisfy this requirement with one of the following: • Completion of one of the following courses at CCC: Mathematics 164, 170, 171, 180, 185, 190, 191, 200, 290, 292 • A score of 600 on the SAT Reasoning Test. • A score of 570 on the SAT Level I if it was taken between 1995 and Spring 2005. • A score of 520 on the SAT II Exam if it was taken beffore May 1995. • A score of 28 on the ACT. • A score of 3 or better on the AP Exam in Calculus AB or BC. • A score of 3 or better on the AP Exam in Computer Science. • A score of 3 or better on the AP exam in Statistics. • A “C” or better on the General Certificate Exam “A” Level Math Exam. • A score of 5 or better on the IB Higher Level Math Exam B. Seven-Course Breadth Requirements These requirements must be completed before you graduate from UC Berkeley. Requirements must be met with course work, not AP or IB Exam credit, and must meet all the following criteria: • • • • • Courses may be taken for a grade (must be “C-” or better), P/NP, or CR/NC, if P or CR means “C-” or better. Courses must carry a minimum of 2 semester units. Courses from your major department may be used. Not more than 2 courses offered by the same department may be used. Courses used for breadth credit may not also be used to meet Essential Skills requirements (reading and composition, quantitative reasoning, or foreign language). You must take seven courses, distributed as follows: 1. Arts and Literature (Language instruction excluded) Includes courses in the arts and literature involve significant engagement with arts, literature, and language (excluding language instruction or the acquisition of technical skills), either through practical engagement with works of art or through the creation of art. Biological Science Includes all courses in the biological sciences, with some cross-listings, as well as a selection of courses from related disciplines such as anthropology, nutritional sciences, and psychology. Historical Studies Includes courses that deal primarily with the human events, institutions and activities of the past. Select one of the following: Anthropology 125 History 110, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 130, 140, 141, 160, 161 Humanities 113 4. International Studies (Language instruction excluded) Includes courses that involve the study of the contemporary politics, culture, arts, intermediate language, or socioeconomic structure of at least one other country other than the U.S., or courses that involve comparison between the U.S. and another country. Courses that focus on a subculture within the U.S. do not qualify as subjects of study for the purposes of this requirement. Geography 130 5. Philosophy and Values In addition to all philosophy courses, includes courses with a major focus on religion, ethics, legal values, or leading philosophical figures. Physical Sciences Includes all courses in the physical sciences, such as astronomy, chemistry, geology, geophysics, and physics, as well as a selection of courses from related disciplines with some cross-listing. Courses that focus only on computer skills do not qualify. Social and Behavioral Sciences Includes all courses in development studies, economics, legal studies, political economy of industrial societies, political science, sociology, social welfare, and many courses in anthropology, geography, and psychology. A variety of courses from other disciplines and some advanced language courses with a significant linguistic component also are included.
