Job Description of a Clinical Instructor
Teaching Responsibilities
 Responsible for classroom teaching as assigned by and in
coordination with the level team- plans specific unit content,
selects methods and uses resources available.
 Participates in group planning to develop and evaluate
curriculum, course objectives, content, and related learning
experiences periodically.
 Writes and updates course outlines/syllabus in collaboration
with team members.
 Prepares weekly class/RLE plan which serves to guide
his/her daily activities. These have to be kept on file.
 Investigates and tries ways of improving one’s teaching.
 Teaches in the Clinical area/community, demonstrates,
guides students practice, and conducts pre- and postClinical conference.
 Plans, prepares and supervises students’ related learning
experiences and assignment; uses tools for evaluation of
experiences, course, students, and teaching strategies and
devices.
 Communicates plans for student experience to appropriate
nursing service personnel on a day to day basis.

Job Description of a Staff Nurse
A. Direct Patient Care
1. Observes and identifies subjective and objective problems of
patient and institute remedial action when appropriate
2. Receives and endorses patients and makes nursing rounds

necessary

JOB FUNCTIONS IN AFFILIATING HOSPITALS
STAFF NURSE (DR, LR) – responsible in the management and
supervision of nursing and related activities in the delivery room.
Supervises Nursing Aides/Nursing Students in the delivery room and
labor room. Provides assistance and guidance in observing asepsis in her
unit.
LABOR ROOM NURSE
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform admitting assessments, review history and develop plan of
care. Initiate fetal heart monitor, interpret fetal heart tones and
determine frequency duration and intensity of contractions.
2. Monitor progress of laboring mothers, interpret fetal heart monitor
and notify physician when appropriate for progress or problems.
Assist mother and labor coach with breathing exercises, pain
management techniques and administer pain medication as
ordered. Prepare birthing room for delivery using strict sterile
technique.
3. Prepare mothers for elective or emergency Cesarean Section.
Provide emotional support to mother and coach, obtain proper
consents and pre-op diagnostic studies and coordinate smooth
transfer to surgery.
4. Assist physician with initiation of oxytocin inductions and monitor
progress of labor: mix IV oxytocin drips, adjust flow rate or pump
according to physician's orders, be alert for abnormalities or
problems.
5. Document nursing care properly on chart forms, birth certificates,
and computer.
6. Assist physician in administering care during labor: artificial
rupture of membranes, initiation of internal fetal monitoring or
intrauterine pressure catheter, initiation of oxytocin drip or other
IV medications, sterile vaginal exams or other procedures. Assist
anesthesia with the administration of spinal or epidural anesthetic.
7. Perform immediate post-delivery care of mother and infant:
determine Apgar scores, suction and bulb suction infants, apply ID
bands, weigh and measure infant, administer medications to
mother and infant as ordered, assist physician with resuscitation,
perform fundal message and monitor vital signs and lochia as
needed, promote infant/parent bonding and obtain newborn
identification per policy.
8. Perform post-partum care and provide patient education to
mother: check lochia, episiotomy and fundus, provide instruction
in child care, breast feedings and self-care to mother, monitor vital
signs per policy, report problems to physician.
9. Perform nursery care on infant: operate OB equipment, newborn
monitor, phototherapy light, assess infants and vital signs, assist
with circumcision, coordinate stabilization and transfer of unstable
infants, perform or assist with all feedings (breast feeding, nipple
feeding or gavage feeding ) perform cord care, do Dextrosticks,
initiate isolation if indicated. Assess gestational age, give bath, take
pictures, perform hearing screening and any other treatments.
10. Administer medications, solutions and treatments per physician's
order. Display knowledge of administration and effects of
medications used.
11. Initiate and maintain IV and oxygen therapy on infants under the
direction of a physician.
12. Perform discharge teaching for all patients.
13. Provide required care for OB patients.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
 Adhere to principles of infection control in delivery of OB care:
restrict visitors per policy, enforce policy regarding cover-ups,
scrub clothes and hand-washing, assure housekeeping
department cleans area adequately, enforce isolation policies for
care of infant and mother, instruct parents in principles of
infection control, assure routine cleaning done on prescribed
basis, demonstrate sterile technique.
 Adhere to general policies of the OB Department: assure proper
consent for birthing room and support persons in birthing
room, keep stats up to date, restock medications and supplies,
insure newborn safety, etc.
 Display knowledge of specialized OB equipment instruments
and procedures.
 Stock OB department, order supplies, request maintenance or
ancillary support services.
 Display knowledge of specialized resuscitation protocol for
infants: CPR technique, drug
dosages, fluid requirements,
thermoregulation, stabilization and transport.
 Participate in in-services and continue education specialized for
OB/Nursery.
 Maintain current licensure, BLS certification.
 Rotate call days and floating to other departments.
SKILLS: Knowledge of labor, delivery, postpartum and nursery care
essential. Must know principles and practice of sterile technique and
infection control. Must be skilled in technical aspects of mother/infant
care. Able to perform effectively in highly stressful situations. Must be
able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people. Excellent
communication skills. Able to assume a leadership role and serve as an
example to other employees.
RN OBSTRETRICS
Evaluates, plans, implements, and documents nursing care for OB/GYN
patient population. Assists physician during examinations and
procedures. Provides comprehensive, family centered nursing care to
mothers and babies during antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum
periods. Requires an associate's degree and is certified as a registered
nurse. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures
within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and
accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A wide degree of creativity
and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a manager or head of a
unit/department.
STAFF NURSE (Ward) – responsible in rendering nursing care of
patients, supportive and restorative of life and well being. Assess, plans,
and implement nursing activities based on identified health problems,
through case findings, health teaching and counseling. Participate in the
orientation of nursing students in their respective unit. Assist in the
improvement of nursing care. Act as a team leader and performs her
duty to the best of her ability for quality and patient care. Must be able
to carry out doctors order within hospital policy and legal limitations,
maintains records, nursing notes and individual care. Maintains good
relationship with hospital personnel and public.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
1. Job. Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Head nurse in the unit,
administers in the comprehensive (physical, spiritual, social,
psychological) quality nursing care and prescribed medication
to patients: carries out doctors’ orders, assists physicians in
the examination of patients, keep up to date and accurate record,
records regarding patients’ health condition and reports any
unusual condition and reports any unusual problems to the Head
Nurse.
2. Specific Duties and Functions:
Together with the Head nurse, she receives endor5sements from
the outgoing shift and endorses to the incoming shift.
1. Administers comprehensive quality care to all patients (morning
care, perineal care, bed baths and shampoos, alcohol rub,
spiritual, psychological and other needs of her patients).
a. Prepares and administers medicines (oral medications, IM
injections, oxygen inhalation, etc.) and makes accurate reports
on patients’ condition and reaction to medication and
treatment. Countersigns all medications given.
b. Receives and orients patients admitted to the unit and gives
initial nursing care to them, i.e provides blankets, pillows and
other needed facilities, etc.
c. Carries out doctors’ orders and transcribed it in the kardex,
medication sheet and medication cards.
d. Answers patients’ call and attends to their needs sand requests
for additional help.
e. Keeps updated and accurate record regarding patients’ health
condition by constantly monitoring patients’ condition and
patients’ progress.
f. Does chart rounds systematically and accurately. Monitors his
assigned patients in the ward and reports immediately any
undue deviations and significant changes in the patients’
condition.
g. Assists the physician in the examinations of patients by
properly positioning the patient for required examination and
providing a screen for privacy.
h. Schedules patients for laboratory and examinations. Makes
referrals to the other departments and follows them up. There
are done according to the prescribed operating procedures.
i. Prepares patients for discharge by giving them proper
instructions on home medication and other health teachings
and giving patients’ their unused medicines.
j. Notifies the Hospital Chaplain to administer Sacrament of the
Sick, to hear confessions and give Holy Communion if needed.
2. Sees to it that all machines/ equipments/ articles used in the
ward/ unit are in good working condition and reports to the Head
nurse of Nurse Supervisor of any malfunctioning equipments; does
after care of instruments/ equipments used in a procedure.
3. Participates in the orientation of new nurse, private duty nurse,
private duty nurses, nursing aides, ward clerks, student nurses
and clerks.
4. Helps in the maintenance, orderliness and cleanliness of the
wards.
5. Supervises nursing aides and ward clerks in the absence of the
Head nurse and nursing students in the absence of the Clinical
Instructors.
6. For correct patient census compare the actual number of patients
with the actual head count, kardex, charts and diet list.
7. Observes and implements all nursing and hospital policies and
SOP’s.
8. Performs other official duties as maybe assigned from time to time.
9. Responsible for the smooth functioning of personnel under her
supervision.
10. Takes the vital signs of patients and records them in the chart.
11. Measures and records accurately all the intake/ output of
patients.
12. Attends and participates in meetings, seminars, in-service
training programs in the nursing service and other university
activities.
13. Takes responsibility for her own personal and professional
growth by continuing education, enrolling for post graduate
studies and by constant reading of current trends and practices
in nursing.
14. Becomes a PNA member by paying her dues and actively
participates in all activities of the organization.

3. Reports to the Head Nurse regarding stock problems in her clinic.
4. Communicates appropriately to her team members.
5. Liaises appropriately with Physicians on issues related to patients
or clinics.
6. Gives adequate report to Head Nurse on admission or transfer to
E.R.
7. Interacts with patients, peers, superiors and liaising staff in a civil
and appropriate way.
8. Translates effectively between English and Arabic.
