to enable your child to complete that section. Please write a comment, if you would like to,
about the work and how your child has coped with it.
For completion by parent/ guardian

What is this HLA about?
As designers of products you need to understand Sustainability and how Ethics
affects our choice of food. Food manufacturers have to think very carefully about
environmental issues when they are designing new food products. This HLA
focuses on Food and Graphics.
Background information:
A lot of media attention is focused on the effect that both Food manufacturers
and consumers are having on the environment. This is not just about the
packaging of food products but also the choice of ingredients.
1) Task One. You will understand what key logos mean in relation to Food Ethics.
Produce a mind map that shows the logos and what they mean.
[You will need to spend 30 minutes on this task]




In this task you need to show an understanding of a range of these issues.
You need to explain what each logo means when you see it on food products.
You should be able to explain issues surrounding each one.
To find the information you will need to google each logo or visit the library.

Task Two [You will need to spend 1 hour on this section]
To carry out a survey of Food Products and identify how the ingredients and packaging
can be made environmentally friendly.
 Carry out a survey at a local eating venue and research what ingredients are
chosen that are environmentally friendly. How do the venues promote this
information to the consumer on their menus? You can find out this information
by visiting any one the following places - Costa Café, Café Nero, Starbucks and
have a look at their menus. Visit websites and find examples of menus.
 Visit a supermarket and look at the packaging of a range of food products.
What environmental logos are appearing on these products?
Do they use recyclable materials or biodegradable materials to package the
product? Do they use a minimal amount of material to package the product?
You must provide evidence of your research findings. This could be in table format.
Task Three [You will need to spend 1 hour 30 minutes on this section]
In this task you will develop an understanding of fair-trade.
Design Task:
“Starbucks want to launch a new chocolate drink that will encourage
customers to be more ethical in their food choices. They have asked you to design the
label that will go on the drink container. It must meet the following design criteria:
Must use Fair-trade Chocolate.
Be based on an existing drink sold in Cafes.
Must include a food label that encourages customers to support fair-trade.
The label must provide key information about Fair-trade and encourage
them to support Fair-trade Products. [ Refer to above research]
 The label must Include a logo to promote the drink.
 You will need to show a back and front view of your drink.

Read the information below to learn facts about Fair-trade and how Cadburys
chocolate now supports Fair-trade. You will need to know the key points to help in the
designing of your label.

Farmers in developing countries
are paid fairly for their products
The money is used to cover
costs.
Any money left over is used to
improve the local community
There is a wide range of Fairtrade products on sale



Fair trade is about guaranteed fair prices for the
farmers, farmer workers and their families. It
ensures better working conditions and local
sustainability.
Companies who buy the farmers’ products must
pay the market price.
Workers benefit from the investment in education,
healthcare, farming improvements and better
working conditions.
Fair trade is an independent consumer label, which guarantees that the farmers and
workers in lesser economically developed countries receive a fair price for their
products. The food must be prepared in an environmentally responsible way.
Money paid on top of the Fair-trade minimum price that is invested in social,
environmental and economic developmental projects, decided upon democratically by
a committee of producers within the organisation or of workers on a plantation
The Fair-trade minimum price defines the lowest possible price that a buyer of Fairtrade products must pay the producer
In 2009 Cadbury Dairy Milk became
Fair Trade
In total, 350 million Cadbury Dairy
Milk bars will carry the Fair Trade
Mark each year around the world.
The move has quadrupled the
amount of Fair Trade cocoa coming
out of Ghana, compared with 2008,
and will benefit more than 40,000
farmers.
The coffee chain Starbucks is introducing a reusable cup which UK customers can keep, in a
move designed to encourage them to be more environmentally conscious while saving money.
The reusable cup is based on the design of the brand's distinctive white and green paper cups
and will cost £1.
Customers who use their reusable cup will receive a 25p discount off their Starbucks drink
every time they use it. The cup is made of a high-quality material which is lighter than the
Starbucks ceramic tumblers, which will still be available.
The reusable cups will be available in selected stores nationwide from today but will be rolled
out gradually elsewhere.
