If you do not have access to the internet at home you are able to use the computers at lunchtime in T10 or use the public library which will have public internet facilities. As designers of products you need to understand Sustainability and how Ethics affects our choice of food. Food manufacturers have to think very carefully about environmental issues when they are designing new food products. This HLA focuses on Food and Graphics. Background information: A lot of media attention is focused on the effect that both Food manufacturers and consumers are having on the environment. This is not just about the packaging of food products but also the choice of ingredients. 1) Task One. You will understand what key logos mean in relation to Food Ethics. Produce a mind map that shows the logos and what they mean. [You will need to spend 30 minutes on this task] In this task you need to show an understanding of a range of these issues. You need to explain what each logo means when you see it on food products. You should be able to explain issues surrounding each one. Genetically Modified Foods The Red Tractor Task Two [You will need to spend 1 hour on this section] To carry out a survey of Food Products and identify how the ingredients and packaging can be made environmentally friendly. Carry out a survey at a local eating venue and research what ingredients are chosen that are environmentally friendly. How do the venues promote this information to the consumer on their menus? You can find out this information by visiting any one the following places - Costa Café, Café Nero, Starbucks and have a look at their menus. Visit websites and find examples of menus. Visit a supermarket and look at the packaging of a range of food products. What environmental logos are appearing on these products? Do they use recyclable materials or biodegradable materials to package the product? Do they use a minimal amount of material to package the product? You must provide evidence of your research findings. This could be in table format. Task Three [You will need to spend 1 hour 30 minutes on this section] In this task you will develop an understanding of fair-trade. Design Task: “Starbucks want to launch a new chocolate drink that will encourage customers to be more ethical in their food choices. They have asked you to design the label that will go on the drink container. It must meet the following design criteria: Must use Fair-trade Chocolate. Be based on an existing drink sold in Cafes. Must include a food label that encourages customers to support fair-trade. The label must provide key information about Fair-trade and encourage them to support Fair-trade Products. [ Refer to above research] The label must Include a logo to promote the drink. You will need to show a back and front view of your drink. Read the information below to learn facts about Fair-trade and how Cadburys chocolate now supports Fair-trade. You will need to know the key points to help in the designing of your label. Farmers in developing countries are paid fairly for their products The money is used to cover costs. Any money left over is used to improve the local community There is a wide range of Fairtrade products on sale Fair trade is about guaranteed fair prices for the farmers, farmer workers and their families. It ensures better working conditions and local sustainability. Companies who buy the farmers’ products must pay the market price. Workers benefit from the investment in education, healthcare, farming improvements and better working conditions. Fair trade is an independent consumer label, which guarantees that the farmers and workers in lesser economically developed countries receive a fair price for their products. The food must be prepared in an environmentally responsible way. Money paid on top of the Fair-trade minimum price that is invested in social, environmental and economic developmental projects, decided upon democratically by a committee of producers within the organisation or of workers on a plantation The Fair-trade minimum price defines the lowest possible price that a buyer of Fairtrade products must pay the producer In 2009 Cadbury Dairy Milk became Fair Trade In total, 350 million Cadbury Dairy Milk bars will carry the Fair Trade Mark each year around the world. The move has quadrupled the amount of Fair Trade cocoa coming out of Ghana, compared with 2008, and will benefit more than 40,000 farmers. The coffee chain Starbucks is introducing a reusable cup which UK customers can keep, in a move designed to encourage them to be more environmentally conscious while saving money. The reusable cup is based on the design of the brand's distinctive white and green paper cups and will cost £1. Customers who use their reusable cup will receive a 25p discount off their Starbucks drink every time they use it. The cup is made of a high-quality material which is lighter than the Starbucks ceramic tumblers, which will still be available. The reusable cups will be available in selected stores nationwide from today but will be rolled out gradually elsewhere.
