We have received many applications and so are hopeful that we will be able to make a decision shortly, and have good news to report in next month’s newsletter. Meanwhile, Jennifer is interviewing in the La Crosse area, and busy with showings of her home. We wish her well in both endeavors. Having grown up in a large and loving family, I certainly understand and support Jen’s desire to be closer to her family, and applaud her desire to help her aging grandparents. It is wonderful to see such warmth and compassion in a young person. We will miss you, Jen! ~Mary Becky’s Bits Thanks to all who donate to our loan closet! We currently have lots of equipment in stock: walkers, toilet seat risers, shower chair & more. Give us a call, or stop in to check out what we have. With that said, we are always accepting items you may want to donate. When donating or returning an item, please make sure they are clean and in working order. Thank you! In our world today, it’s more important than ever to be aware of your surroundings. Would you know what to do if someone approached you in an unsafe way? Don’t miss the March TRIAD presentation. Charles Dean of HWA Rang Do has been here before & will talk about, as well as show you self-defense techniques you can use to protect yourself. Bring yourself, friends and family to this important presentation on Thursday, March 3 at 10:30 AM. Just a few random facts, because why not? Polar Bears can eat as many as 86 penguins in a single sitting (sad face) It is illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas day in the UK, the most money ever paid for a cow at auction was $1.3 million dollars; and stressed is desserts spelled backwards. Hmmm… Happy Almost Spring! ~ Becky 2 | VERONA SENIOR CENTER Health Bits from Barbara March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control. When cancer starts in the colon or rectum, it is called colorectal cancer. Sometimes it is called colon cancer, for short. Colorectal cancer affects men and women of all racial and ethnic groups, and is most often found in people aged 50 years or older. In the United States, it is the third most common cancer for men and women. Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. The diagnostic procedure uses a fiber optic camera to examine a patient’s colon under anesthesia. It is done as an outpatient procedure and you have to have another person drive you home from the procedure. A colonoscopy can be a lifesaving diagnostic tool!!! In addition, please note that the Badger Prairie Needs Network now offers FREE lunches to seniors on Saturdays from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM. Happy Spring to You All!! ~Nurse Barbara Colorectal cancer screening saves lives!! Screening can find precancerous polyps-abnormal growths in the colon or rectum-so they can be removed before turning into cancer. Screening also helps find colorectal cancer at an early stage, when treatment often leads to a cure. About nine out of ten people whose cancers are found early and treated are still alive five years later. If you are 50 or older, get screened now. Speak with your health care provider as screening including a “colonoscopy” is covered under most insurance. Based on Bill Bryson's bestseller, the movie co-stars Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman & Kristen Schaal.” “In 1973, a spiritual awakening captures the hearts of the Woodlawn High School Football team. Lead by their coach, Tandy Geralds, and fueled by the team's dedication to love and unity in a school filled with racism and hate, the team makes an astounding run at the playoffs, leading to the largest high school football game ever played in the torn city of Birmingham, Alabama, and the rise of its first African-American superstar - Tony Nathan.” Rated PG; 125 “The Martian” Friday, March 11 at 1:00 PM “From legendary director Ridley Scott (Alien, Prometheus) comes a gripping tale of human strength and the will to survive.
