Summer Reading Entering 10 Grade th August 2014 Please read the books listed below in preparation for 10th grade. 1. The Case for Christ (Student Edition), Lee Strobel 2. Because of Romek, David Faber You may find these books at the public library, local bookstores, online, or on your reading device. Create one five paragraph analysis reflection for each: The Case for Christ and Because of Romek. Students must read the selections, create their book reports, and bring them to class on the first day of school, August 2014. If you have any questions please feel free to email me (Ms. Bowser) at: abowser@christchapel.org Book 1 The Case for Christ (Student Edition), Lee Strobel Analyze this book in an essay, picking out at least 3 points that you want to comment on, either showing your support or disagreement with those 3 points described in the book. A) Begin your essay by creating an introduction paragraph, with the name and author of the book in your introduction sentences, background information about the plot in the following sentences, and a thesis (your summary argument about the book) as the last sentence of your introduction paragraph. B) The next 3 paragraphs will be your body paragraphs, based on your three main points taken from the book. Each paragraph needs an introduction and conclusion sentence. Introduction sentences summarize what you are going to say in each paragraph and conclusion sentences summarize what your paragraph was about. Choose what point you want to quote and quote it by including the author name and page number in parenthesis. Next, summarize the point in your own words. Finally, comment on why you liked or disliked that point. C) The fifth paragraph will be your conclusion. Your conclusion should begin with a rephrasing of your thesis in the first sentence, a summary of your main 3 points in the following sentences, and a real-life application as your last sentence in the conclusion paragraph. D) Fill out and include the following outline for your paper. I. If you read anything about your book and/or use any ideas for your book report from an outside source (like a website), you MUST cite your source. Even if you do not quote word for word, if you get ideas from a source, you MUST cite it. Therefore, my recommendation is that you read the book only and you write without consulting anything other than the book and your Pocket Style Manual.
