Through this effort, we are working to make high-quality leadership development affordable and accessible to all people around the globe. CCL has created low cost leadership development programs, tools, and models that can be offered at the grassroots via NGOs, educational institutions, government agencies, and community organizations. Why empower women? • • • • • • • Women produce more than 80 percent of the food for Sub-Saharan Africa, 5060 percent for Asia, 26 percent for the Caribbean, 34 percent for North Africa and the Middle East, and more than 30 percent for Latin America In Mexico - 32% of women-owned businesses were started less than 5 years ago In France - women head one in four firms In Swaziland - Women account for about 70% of micro, small, and medium enterprises In the US, women are paid are 80 cents for every dollar men are paid. AfricanAmerican women are paid an average of 67 cents and Hispanic women an average of 56 cents for every dollar a white man is paid (from different UN, US Census, Catalyst, Jalbert et al etc.) © 2010 Center for Creative Leadership. Why empower women? • Leadership and Empowerment together allow a women to make effective decisions and are critical concepts at the heart of elevating women’s status and allowing them to participate in their own development. • Women entrepreneurs in many developing countries continue to face serious challenges stemming from societal and gender barriers, political and socio-economic instability, and weak institutional infrastructure. • By maximizing the entrepreneurial and leadership skills of women entrepreneurs, and through their participation in women’s business organizations, gender equality and economic growth and development can be improved. © 2010 Center for Creative Leadership.
