DONNIE NELSON
One of the most respected minds in the NBA, Donnie Nelson is involved in every aspect of the Mavericks basketball
operations. Nelson, who owns 22 years of NBA experience, came to Dallas on Jan. 2, 1998 after three seasons as an
assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns.
Nelson was instrumental in rebuilding a team that suffered a decade-long playoff draught into a perennial playoff team
and championship contender. Under Nelson the Mavericks have won 66.0% of their games with three 60+ win
seasons, including a franchise-record 67-win season in 2007 which tied for the sixth best record in NBA history. The
Mavericks are also one of just six NBA franchises to win 60 games or more three times in a five year span. During his
tenure, the Mavericks have made the playoffs seven consecutive seasons, been to the Western Conference Finals twice,
reached a franchise milestone in 2006 when they advanced to the NBA Finals, and won their first Division Title in 20
years in 2007.
Nelson successfully coached the Mavericks while his father and former head coach Don Nelson was recovering from
cancer surgery in 2000-01. Donnie led the team to a 15-8 record while serving as head coach. He was the top assistant
to his father at Golden State, where he served the organization a total of eight seasons (1986-94). Nelson was also a
regional scout for the Milwaukee Bucks for two seasons (1984-86).
Since 1990, Nelson has served as an assistant coach for the Lithuanian National Team. In that span, he has helped
them win three bronze medals in four Olympiads, a silver medal in the 1995 European Championships and a gold
medal in the 2003 European Championships. In appreciation of his contributions, Nelson was awarded the Grand
Cross of the Commander by the President of Lithuania in 2004. He also serves as Honorary Ambassador for the League
of Industries.
In 1994, Nelson proudly served as a scout for USA Basketball at the World Championships in Toronto. Dream Team II
went undefeated on their way to capturing a gold medal that year.
Nelson's tireless efforts helped crack two walls that once seemed unbreakable. He was responsible for signing the first
player from both the Soviet Union (Sarunas Marciulionis) and China (Wang Zhizhi) to NBA contracts. In addition,
Nelson holds the honor of being the only American coach to participate in a Soviet National training camp. On June 24,
1998, Nelson engineered a deal that brought a relatively unknown German and an unheralded Canadian to Dallas. Both
Dirk Nowitzki (2007) and Steve Nash (2005, 2006) would go on to be named the NBA's Most Valuable Player, giving
the Mavericks the distinction of being the only team in history to acquire two future MVPs in the same transaction.
"Donnie has been my biggest supporter from day one," said seven-time NBA All-Star and 2007 MVP Dirk Nowitzki.
"He works harder than any coach or president in the NBA. He thinks about basketball 24 hours a day."
Nelson also serves as the Chief Advisor for the Chinese National Basketball Team. During his three years of service,
they equaled their all-time best Olympic finish (8th) in Athens and won the Gold Medal at the 2005 and 2007 Asian
Championships. He is currently working with the Chinese Basketball Association in preparation for the 2008 Beijing
Olympics. Nelson's first exposure to the continent of Africa took place in 1992. He has conducted clinics in North
Africa, Senegal, Nigeria and South Africa. Nelson is especially proud to be associated with the NBA's Basketball
Without Borders program in Africa. This outreach program provides educational opportunities to challenged African
athletes. The Mavericks roster currently boasts two African-born players.Nelson founded the "Global Games" in Dallas,
which gives area high school kids a chance to test themselves against the top Junior National Teams in the world. The
games completed their eighth season this past summer.
In Dec., 2002, Nelson's heart for disadvantaged youth led to the creation of the Assist Youth Foundation which has
since combined with the charity organization known as Heroes. The foundation's goal is to advance opportunities for
underprivileged kids in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and across the globe.
A 1986 graduate of Wheaton College (Ill.) , Nelson was inducted into the school's Hall of Honor on Oct. 3, 1997. He led
Wheaton in scoring and was an NABC All-Midwest selection. Born Sept. 10, 1962, he and his wife, Lotta, have a
daughter, Christie (8/10/92) and son, D.J. (5/24/94).

OWNERSHIP/COACHING STAFF
EDUARDO NAJERA-OWNER, GENERAL MANAGER, HEAD COACH
Eduardo Najera retired from the NBA in 2013 to become the first Mexican-born head coach in the NBA Development
League, General Manager and minority owner of the Texas Legends, while holding a front office job with the Dallas
Mavericks. As General Manager he is involved in all major decisions for the Texas Legends which include player
transactions, scouting and drafting.
Eduardo began his twelve year stint as a player in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks in 2000 following four years of
play at the University of Oklahoma. He was the first Mexican-born player to be drafted in NBA history. He played with
the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, a second stint with Dallas, and
finished his career with the Charlotte Bobcats. In 639 career games (85 starts), he averaged 5.2 points and 4.2
rebounds in 18.7 minutes per game.
Throughout his NBA career, he was a leader on and off the court and was known as a dependable member of the team
and valued member of the locker room. The work ethic that Eduardo exhibited as a player transcended into keeping
him on the court in a new capacity as head coach. His knowledge of the NBA game served him well in his first year
with the Texas Legends and provides great promise for a long-term future in the NBA.
Eduardo commanded respect both on and off the court from his players. In his first season with the Legends he
promoted four players to be called up to the NBA (Dallas Mavericks: Chris Douglas-Roberts, Mike James, Justin
Dentmon, and Golden State: Dwayne Jones). He was responsible for hiring and managing a full coaching staff,
scouting talent, and coordinating player selection, trades and free agency. He developed extensive plans for training
camp and practices, and solicited sponsorships in excess of $1M through his connections in Mexico and Latin
America. As a coach, he also has the potential to create new paths for minorities in basketball and develop strong
connections between his neighboring native country, Mexico, and the NBA.
His mission is simple: “To carry forward my passion of the game, competitive spirit, and will to win by coaching,
mentoring, and leading a team of players. My philosophy is to develop not only great athletes, but great human beings
through the game of basketball, which provides values, fundamentals, and lessons that can be used in every aspect of
life.”
When Eduardo is not coaching or playing, he dedicates the majority of his free time to his family and friends. He
enjoys traveling, remaining active, dining, and helping others. He was the Honorary Chairman for St. Jude’s in 2013,
has hosted more than 300 basketball camps and clinics around the world. He founded The Najera League of
Basketball in Mexico, which now has 30,000 boys & girls practicing the sport. He launched Eduardo Najera
Foundation for Latin Achievement, participated in the basketball without borders tournament in Rio de Janiero Brazil
in 2004 and Mexico in 2009. He hosted fundraising events for children of war-torn Afghanistan in conjunction with
the NBA, US Fund for UNICEF and Pier 1 and has represented more than a dozen brands in and around the world.

COACHING STAFF
Dean Murray has been coaching for 24 years. Murray began his career as
an assistant coach in NCAA Division I before joining the NBA Development
League in 2001. For the past 13 seasons Murray has split time between the
Development League and overseas leagues such as the Korean Basketball
League and BJ League Japan. Murray’s experience with the NBA
Development League provides the Legends with a unique perspective on
players and teams across the league, as well as an international viewpoint.
Charlie Parker has coached professional basketball for 17 years both
overseas and in the NBA, including as an assistant coach with the Legends’
NBA affiliate Dallas Mavericks. Prior to that, he was the Head Coach of
Wayne State University and University of Southern California. Parker’s
diverse background will provide a depth to the coaching staff that will enable
players to develop both from an individual standpoint as well as from a team
perspective. Parker’s NBA experience will be invaluable to players as they
pursue their NBA dreams.
Hollis Price recently hung up his playing shoes to begin his coaching
career. Price played at the University of Oklahoma, where he was Big 12
Player of the Year in 2003, before pursuing his professional career for nine
years. Price played overseas in France, Germany, Spain, Lithuania, Russia
and Italy winning numerous awards and serving as a product endorser for
brands such as 1 Apparel and Vilnius. Price launches his coaching career
alongside fellow University of Oklahoma alum Eduardo Najera as they look
to replicate the success each enjoyed as a player under former Oklahoma
coach Kelvin Sampson.
Brandon Espinosa comes to the Legends from Dallas Christian College
where he played guard from 2007-2011 and began his coaching career as a
graduate assistant in 2011. Espinosa has worked with players of all
ages. Espinosa will provide support to Legends’ players in all areas—both on
and off the basketball court.
2013-14 TEXAS LEGENDS MEDIA GUIDE 12
COACHING STAFF
Tyler Gatlin returns to the bench for his second year of coaching and
third year on the Legends’ staff. Gatlin was promoted from the scouting
staff to the coaching staff last season and utilized his knowledge of the
league and devout study of the game to strengthen the bench. Gatlin also
assists with team travel, practice schedules, and other logistical areas.
Travis Blakeley joined the team in its inaugural season and has since
moved up to the role of Director of Player Development. Blakeley brings an
energy and dedication to the team that takes each practice to a new level,
and helped Najera establish a franchise record with four call-ups to the
NBA (Chris Douglas-Roberts, Mike James, Justin Dentmon, and Dwayne
Jones) during the 2012-13 season.

HISTORIC VERACRUZ
LEGENDS ANNOUNCE GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIP WITH STATE OF
VERACRUZ, MEXICO
(Dec. 13, 2012) The NBA Development League’s Texas Legends and the state of Veracruz, Mexico,
announced a historic marketing partnership highlighted by “Veracruz Incomparable” being prominently
featured on the front of the Legends jersey beginning on Saturday, December 15, with their home game
against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
The new multi-year agreement makes the historic state of Veracruz the first non-team city to have its name
and slogan prominently featured on the jersey of a professional sports team.
As presenting partner of the Legends, the team’s home arena will now be called the “Veracruz Court at Dr
Pepper Arena” with the Veracruz logo displayed on center court. Additionally, Veracruz will receive
significant in-arena signage and television exposure throughout the Legends’ market through the team’s
family of local television networks.
“It's truly an honor to partner with a historic and dynamic city like Veracruz,” said Texas co-owner Donnie
Nelson. “This destination has it all, and we are excited to further showcase this city to Texas and across the
United States, while extending the Legends brand to fans in Mexico.”
Designed to promote tourism and commerce for the cities of Veracruz and Frisco, and to create greater
exposure for the Legends and the NBA D-League outside of the U.S., this partnership signifies another first
for the NBA’s official minor league. Recently, it was announced that the NBA D-League would have more
than 350 games streamed live on YouTube during the 2012-13 regular season on NBADLeague.com and
the NBA D-League YouTube channel, the most live games on YouTube by a major professional sports
league, creating greater exposure for the league and its teams internationally, including throughout Mexico.
“With the campaign ‘Incomparable Veracruz’, the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography of
Veracruz aims to increase the number of tourists to our destination resorts,” commented Secretary of
Tourism Harry Grappa. “Dallas has direct international flights to Veracruz, which makes this a natural
partnership. Additionally, this partnership is a first of its kind in Texas, where we believe there is a
significant potential for tourism to Veracruz. We look forward to Texans considering Veracruz as a primary
travel option on future vacations.”
Through this partnership, Veracruz presents its wide range of cultural attractions, historical, archaeological,
and natural products. Highlighting sites like El Puerto de Veracruz and its folklore and history; Tajin
Archaeological Zone with its great cultural heritage and traditions; and Tlacotalpan, considered as a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO. Furthermore, Veracruz offers nature and adventure activities such as rafting,
canyoneering, and diving in the third largest reef area in the world.
“Veracruz has long been the gateway to Mexico, and it’s no surprise the city is on the cutting edge of building
a Mexican-American bridge of commerce and tourism,” said Legends head coach Eduardo Najera. “I’m
proud to bring the Legends and Veracruz families together in this historic partnership.”
The official unveiling of “Veracruz Court at Dr Pepper Arena” and the Legends home jerseys featuring the
Veracruz logo, will debut on Saturday, December 15 at 7 pm CT when the Legends take on the Rio Grande
Valley Vipers.

SEASON RECAP
LEGENDS TAKE BUSINESS AND BASKETBALL TO NEW HEIGHTS IN 2012-13
(May 14, 2013) – The Texas Legends (presented by Veracruz-visit Veracruz.mx) led the NBA D-League in
overall sales, sponsorship sales, and season ticket sales, each for the third straight year. Along the way, the
Texas Legends signed a historic and innovative presenting partnership with the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
The Legends also unveiled new and exciting elements to their game presentation, while becoming the
league’s flagship franchise for charitable jersey nights as more than half of the team’s home games centered
around unique jerseys. Finally, thanks to the best fan base in the entire NBA D-League, the Legends led the
league in attendance.
“It was an inspired season-our best yet," stated Texas Legends’ President Bill Boyce. "I'm fortunate to lead a
very talented group of individuals who accomplished notable things individually and extraordinary things as
a team. Foremost, we created a family-friendly environment for the entire community. I enjoyed
tremendously seeing countless smiles on the faces of kids, parents, and grandparents. And, it was extremely
gratifying to work with many charities to make this community a better place to work and live. We're so
fortunate to be a part of North Texas. I couldn't be more proud of the owners, management, staff, interns,
and others who joined together to accomplish incomparable results this season.”
The Texas Legends successfully partnered with the NBA D-League to revise a rule limiting the number of
alternative jersey nights to six. As a result, the Texas Legends produced thirteen jersey nights this past
season, each of which benefitted a charity or non-profit. The Legends currently anticipate that it will be
partnering with the NBA D-League to produce twenty-four jersey nights next season, each of which will
benefit a charity or non-profit.
“The game atmosphere and customer service at the Legends is second-to-none,” commented Legends suite
owner Jason Schwartz. “Having been to sporting events around the country – in premium seats – the
Legends charitable mission and willingness to go above and beyond what is expected to create a first class
experience separates them from any other hospitality platform. With the Legends I don’t have to ask when
next season starts, because the season never really ends – there is always a next event.”
The Texas Legends also successfully partnered with the NBA D-League to revise a rule to expand when
music can be played during games. This change increased the energy and augmented an already dynamic
game presentation.
“The Texas Legends games are one of the most entertaining and stimulating experiences from a fan's
perspective that I can recall in over 25 years of watching NBA, NHL, D-League, WNBA, MLB, and minor
league baseball games,” added NBA Vice President Jerry Murphy.
The Texas Legends also built a TV production trailer that emulates the production trailers used by NBA
teams. The trailer was custom designed and built by North Texas Trailers, the workflow is powered by
NewTek equipment, and the graphics are generated by Chyron. Utilizing this trailer, the Texas Legends
became the first NBA D-League team to produce twenty-three games for local TV and the first NBA DLeague team to televise all twenty-four regular season home games live on broadcast or cable TV.
In addition, the Legends set a new franchise record for attendance while leading the league in attendance.
The Legends accomplished this benchmark in part by selling the most group tickets in the history of the
NBA D-League.
In basketball operations, the Legends also set a franchise record for call-ups to the NBA as the Legends saw
four players coached by Eduardo Najera make their way to the NBA (Chris Douglas-Roberts, Mike James,
Justin Dentmon, and Dwayne Jones). Mike James became the first Legends player to be called up and
subsequently start in the NBA as he was announced the starting point guard for the Mavericks for the final
23 games of the Mavericks season.
