According to Webster’s Dictionary, a hero ‘is a
person who is admired for great or brave acts
or fine qualities.’
To many of us, we know some people
who (although we don’t refer to them as heroes) do “heroic” work for us. Besides doctors, firemen, servicemen, policemen etc.
(who are considered heroes) there is your average person who does something that you
know you couldn’t have done without them.
Our administrators, custodians, secretaries,
counselors, aides, teachers- these are heroes.
Las Cruces High School recently lost
one of our greatest heroes - Suzie Jeffers. She
fit the true meaning of a hero. She was admired for her greatness, her strength, her
bravery and fine qualities. She will truly be
missed.

Dear LCHS Performing Dancers,
Throughout the years, we have watched you grow
and prosper. Though it is sad to say goodbye, we say it
with pride. We hope we have taught you more than just
the basics of being a good dancer, but also to be the
best you can be. For the upcoming seniors, we pass the
torch to you with confidence that you will make the
next year even better.
Thank you for such a memorable year! We couldn’t have imagined it without you all. Thank you Ms.
Thomas and Ms. Tarin for all the patience you’ve shown
us, and all you have taught us. We appreciate and love
you both very much.

In 1999 I felt the students in Performing Dance were ready to
share their talent with a live audience. Since there were only 24
students and 8 routines they
needed someone to entertain the
audience while they changed costumes. I called my close friend
Kelly Garret who lived in Hollywood to help us out as our MC. She agreed! With the help
of a quartet she sang and entertained the audience in the
North Commons and also the Farm and Ranch Museum for
two more years. All she ever asked for in return was a good
green chile burrito from Las Cruces.
Kelly appeared in three Broadway shows. She won the Theatre
World Award and a Tony nomination for her appearances in “The
Night that Made America Famous.” She appeared on “The Tonight Show” 29 times as well as on
the Mike Douglas, Merv Griffith,
Dinah Shore, Dean Martin Comedy Hour and others. She made
personal appearances with Bob
Hope, Bob Newhart, and Smothers Brothers. Kelly was featured soloist with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra and
has recorded albums with RCA records.
Kelly was one of our biggest fans. She was always interested in everything we did, although she couldn’t attend any
more of our recitals she always had to make sure she had a
copy of our shows. She coached and gave advice to some of
our performances though out the years.
Kelly lost her battle with cancer this last August.
Kelly will be remembered by many as one of our Heroes.
