* Note: Hamlet: Prince of Denmark (Lexile score 600), A Midsummer Night’s Dream
(Lexile score 500) and Othello: the Moor of Venice (Lexile score 480)
While the sentence length for Hamlet: Prince of Denmark (Lexile score 600), A Midsummer
Night’s Dream (Lexile score 590) and Othello: the Moor of Venice (Lexile score 480) may be
short in passages of dialogue, and while many of the words in these retellings would appear
on high frequency lists, the sentence structure is more literary than Start-to-Finish Gold
Library Books, the cadence of the original author is more closely preserved and words are
used in more abstract and metaphorical ways. The following examples illustrate these points:
“Legs bear me up.” (Hamlet, p. 31)
“He who steals my purse steals trash, but he who steals my good name makes me poor
indeed.” (Othello, the Moor of Venice, p. 55)
“My lord, beware of jealousy, the green-eyed monster.” (Othello, the Moor of Venice, p. 55)
It is the recommendation of the Start-to-Finish editing team that when considering these
th
th
Shakespeare books, that they be used for reading at a grade equivalency of 4 to 5 grade.
