"The Finance Minister stressed upon the need to improve the business climate and reducing the cost of doing business as important means for revival of the investment cycle," an official statement said today. He also emphasised on the need for coordinated approach by all sector regulators to achieve financial stability. "He referred to the high political expectations from the new government and the opportunity now available for resolving long-pending problems facing the economy," the statement said. Jaitley was speaking at the meeting of the Financial Sector Development Council (FSDC) on Saturday. It was attended by financial sector regulators including the Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan and Sebi Chief U K Sinha. The minister also cautioned against slackening the vigil in the area of fiscal consolidation. Finance Secretary Arvind Mayaram briefed the council on the macro-economic situation and improvement in twin deficits. "However, there is a long way to go in terms of reviving economic growth, controlling inflation especially food infla- tion, keeping deficit under control, addressing infrastructure bottlenecks," Mayaram said. He added that there is a need to continue to be in a state of preparedness for managing external sector vulnerabilities. Economic growth slowed to 4.7 per cent in 2013-14 and retail inflation stood at a 3-year high of 8.59 per cent in April. Besides, fiscal deficit narrowed to 4.5 per cent of GDP in 2013-14 from 4.9 per cent in previous year. The financial sector regulators at the meeting presented their suggestions on the forthcoming Budget 2014-15, as also their ideas on next generation financial reforms. Among others who attended the meeting were IRDA Chairman T S Vijayan, FMC Chairman Ramesh Abhishek, PFRDA Officiating Chairman R V Verma and other government officials. (PTI) Cong accuses Govt with 'copying' its agenda NEW DELHI, June 10: Congress today charged the Government with "copying" its agenda in the last 10 years in the President's address and said it had already implemented 90 per cent of the schemes and policies listed out by the NDA. Leading the Congress' attack while speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said BJP has only listed out programmes that have already been implemented by the UPA. Complimenting BJP for its electoral victory, Azad said Congress will play a constructive role as an opposition, but reminded them of the responsibility given by the people as "janadesh, kursi, paisa" (verdict, money and power) do not remain permanently with anyone. Congress also targeted BJP for promising welfare of minorities and said "this is like music to my ears" which "we have yearned for years to hear" and wondered if it was a change of heart for the good or just lip service. Taking a dig at the BJP slogan of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas (all together, development for all), he said it is a mere translation of Manmohan Singh's "inclusive growth" model. "There is nothing in this that we can support. It is a copy of our schemes and programmes. We have already implemented 90 per cent of the programmes listed in this address. We have done all these programmes," he said. "The Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas slogan is a mere translation of Dr Manmohan Singh's model of inclusive growth," he said, adding that he was trying to understand what the slogan of minimum Government and maximum governance actually meant. On the Government's intent to eradicate poverty, Azad said it is a "good slogan" and the entire opposition and Congress will give a gold medal if they achieve success, but questioned in what time frame they will achieve so and where will the resources come from. On BJP Government's bid to reach out to minorities by promising their welfare in the President's address, Azad said it is good they have "realised late than never" and added that its top priority should be guarantee the security of their life and property. Reciting Urdu couplets, Azad hinted at trust deficit over BJP's intention towards minorities. He said whenever Congress Government used to announce any programme for the welfare of minorities, it was termed as "appeasement" by BJP. "This is like music to my ears that BJP talks of programmes for minorities. Our ears were yearning for last 65 years to hear this. It is not just I who wanted to hear this but the entire Opposition. The revolution is not your getting 282. The biggest revolution is this (BJP's talk about welfare of minorities)," Azad said. The Congress leader also warned that the BJP will have to take everyone along and not just merely say that. "This government will have to provide a guarantee to protect the life and property of the minorities, which should be the top priority for this Government," he said. He appeared to be reaching out to non-BJP parties like DMK, Left, SP, BSP and J-U, saying it will be a matter of great happiness for them as well if it was really a "change of heart" of BJP. Azad, who had been a Health Minister in UPA-II Government, used the allegory of an infant to describe the condition of the newly-elected BJP-led NDA government saying infant mortality rate is maximum within the first week of birth to 28 days. "You are in that stage," he said. He said that even for copying some knowledge is required and added that the Government could have at least changed the language while doing so with UPA's programmes. Sd/(A K Pathania) AGE (Contracts) For Garrison Engineer Irked by frequent disruptions from senior members, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today advised them to desist from it as they would present a bad example before the newly elected MPs. "This is not the way. So many new members have come and some have returned after a few years. Please speak when you are given the chance. Such interruptions are not correct," she said telling them that disruptions would not set a good example for new comers. Her observation came during the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address, which was initiated by BJP member Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Rudy outlined the BJP government's plans for development and criticised performance of the previous UPA government, inviting sharp reaction from opposition benches. TMC members Sultan Ahmed, Kalyan Banerjee, Congress' Deepinder Singh Hooda and Adhir Ranjan Choudhury strongly objected to the remarks and asked Rudy to concentrate on the President's speech. Noisy scenes were also witnessed when Rudy, without taking any name, said the country's democracy has been "growing" in such a manner that even if someone goes to jail, his spouse occupies his place as chief minister. RJD members Rajiv Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav strongly objected to the remarks and came to the Well protesting as it was an apparent reference to Rabri Devi wife of RDD supremo Lalu Prasad. Rudy, however, said if anyone was hurt by his remarks, he withdrew the words. (PTI) 'India ranks 15th with 175,000 millionaire households in 2013' NEW YORK, June 10: India had 175,000 millionaire households in 2013, ranking 15th in the world, according to a wealth report which said the total number of millionaire households in the world rose to 16.3 million last year. The Boston Consulting Group's 14th annual report on the global wealth-management industry 'Riding a Wave of Growth: Global Wealth 2014' said global private financial wealth grew by 14.6 per cent in 2013 to reach a total of USD 152 trillion. The rise was stronger than in 2012, when global wealth grew by 8.7 per cent. The key drivers, for the second consecutive year, were the performance of equity markets. India ranked 15th last year and had 175,000 millionaire households. Its position improved slightly from 2012 when it had ranked 16 in the world for its number of millionaire households. India is projected to become the seventh wealthiest nation by 2018. The number of ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) households in India, those with USD 100 million or more, stood at 284 last year. The total number of millionaire households reached 16.3 million in 2013, up strongly from 13.7 million in 2012 and representing 1.1 per cent of all households globally. The US had the highest number of millionaire households at 7.1 million, as well as the highest number of new millionaires at 1.1 million. Robust wealth creation in China was reflected by its rise in millionaire households from 1.5 million in 2012 to 2.4 million in 2013, surpassing Japan. The number of millionaire households in Japan fell from 1.5 million to 1.2 million, driven by the 15 per cent fall in the yen against the dollar. "As the debate over the global polarization of wealth rages on, one thing is certain: more people are becoming wealthy," the report said. As in previous years, North America at USD 50.3 trillion and Western Europe at USD 37.9 trillion remained the wealthiest regions in the world, followed closely by Asia-Pacific at USD 37 trillion. A key driver in the rise of private wealth in the Asia- Pacific region has been strong GDP growth over the past five years, especially in China, India, and Indonesia, the report said. Globally, the amount of wealth held privately rose by USD 19.3 trillion in 2013, nearly twice the increase of USD 10.7 trillion seen in 2012. The growth of private wealth was driven primarily by returns on existing assets. The highest density of millionaire households was in Qatar (175 out of every 1,000 households), followed by Switzerland (127) and Singapore (100). The US had the largest number of billionaires, but the highest density of billionaire households was in Hong Kong (15.3 per million), followed by Switzerland (8.5 per million). At an expected growth of 9.1 percent over the next five years, UHNW households are projected to hold 13 trillion dollars in wealth by the end of 2018. (PTI) Normal power supply to Delhi to be restored in 15 days: Goyal NEW DELHI, June 10: As Delhi reeled under long spells of power outages and scorching summer heat, Power Minister Piyush Goyal today said it will take 15 days to restore normal power supply even as temporary measures to boost generation were put in place. Goyal said the Centre has drawn up an action plan to ease the power crisis in the city with short-term measures to generate 400 megawatts of additional power by tonight. Speaking after a two-and-a-half hour emergency meeting with Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and senior executives of Delhi Transco, Power Grid Corporation and power utilities, the minister warned that dilapidated power grids could not cope with the extra electricity needed to meet demand. Inadequate transmission lines meant Delhi could absorb 400 MW of power on top of its existing 5,300 MW, falling short of current peak demand of 5,800 MW. He blamed the "massive policy paralysis, poor decision making" of the previous Delhi government for the problems in power sector. The Centre has offered its assistance to the Delhi government and its utilities to restore power transmission systems in mission mode, the minister said. Goyal, however, added that transmission lines damaged by last month's severe storm will be repaired in 15 days. Besides repairing broken lines within 24 hours, the government has ordered GAIL to provide extra natural gas to power plants in the national capital. North India has endured a heatwave in the last week, with temperatures in some parts of Delhi reaching a 62-year high, sending power demand surging. The meeting was called amid protests in several parts of the city over long and recurrent outages in the scorching summer heat. Goyal said state-run NTPC Ltd has been asked to transfer some of its natural gas to power projects run by the Delhi government to increase local generation by 400 MW. Also, state gas utility GAIL India Ltd will divert 0.9 million standard cubic meters a day of domestic gas from the now-shut Dabhol power plant in Maharashtra to units in Delhi to generate an additional 218 MW, an oil ministry official said. This will help BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna and Tata Power, the companies that supply electricity in Delhi, as they are unable to draw power from projects located in other states because of the damage to transmission lines. The discoms have also been directed to come up with daily bulletins on the schedule of outages at 8 am every day."A holistic vision and plan for Delhi has been nonexistent for a decade. Lack of decision making, lack of investment in infrastructure and lack of forward planning in last 12 years is responsible for the problem," Goyal said. (PTI)
