They travel a lot and drink excessively. They make reference to an "operation", which is an abortion. The man claims it is a simple operation and that once it is done everything will be "as it was." The girl seems less convinced but says she will do it because she "doesn't care about [herself], only about [him.]" They both drink heavily and they argue and talk "around the subject." Identity: Gender/Racethe American Dream Wealth/Class Man’s Inhumanity to Man Circle the Unit Theme that this source best Fits. Then make a claim for that Fit below and support with evidence from the text. "Everything in moderation." A life of excess or consumption leads to a superficial existence. The couple drink a lot and they travel, which seems to be the only thing they do in life. The title, symbolic of the unwanted pregnancy, suggests that their excessive and frivolous lifestyle would change and become burdensome, but the white elephant is sacred, as is a child, and could provide more meaning to their lives than the superficial pursuit of travel and drinking.
