lawn-mowing business to a full-service
Whether your business is landscaping,

dealer has key parts in stock to service it.
All John Deere dealers are required to meet
specific parts-availability requirements.

The founder’s quote spans one of the walls at John Deere Dubuque Works.
Workers on the skid steer and compact track loader (CTL) assembly lines
live and breathe these words every day. “When I get home at the end of
the day, I can tell my wife I did my best,” says Steve Mootz, assembler in
Engine Sub Assembly. “I believe in what John Deere said, that we put into
these machines the best that is in us.”
Everyone on the assembly line builds the machines as though they are
the ones who are buying them and taking them home. “People buy these
machines because of Deere’s reputation for quality, so we have to get it right,”
says Mootz. “Sure, you can repair a bad machine, but it’s hard to fix a bad

PRODUCED WITH PRIDE
John Deere relocated its skid steer operation to the company’s world-class
manufacturing plant, John Deere Dubuque Works, in 2002. The skid steer
line has benefited over the years from the superb engineering, experienced
workforce, and ISO-certified processes at the top-notch facility. These six
workers explain the teamwork and pride that goes into each machine.

Nebraska landscaper gets it done with Deere compacts
ike many landscapers, Aaron Heins, vice president, Heins Lawn & Landscape in Central City, Nebraska,
got his start mowing lawns to make a little extra money in high school. It was around that time in
1992 that Aaron’s father, James, and mother, Marilyn, were looking to start a landscaping business.
So they decided to put money into their son’s venture, and a family business was born.
“I was a teacher and James was the Merrick
County Treasurer at the time,” recalls
Marilyn. “As the landscaping business
gained momentum, we quit both jobs.
James worked hard on growing the business
until he passed away in 2002. Aaron and
I continued to work hard to make the
business successful. It’s always been our
priority to help people. If we make people
happy, that’s the most important thing. Yes,
making a living is important, but you need
to take care of your customers.”
“Early on, we started investing in commercial equipment and expanded from lawn
mowing into seeding, chemical applications,
sod installation, land leveling, and sprinkler
installation,” recalls Aaron. “We put a lot
of sweat and time into it, and since then
it has grown into a thriving business. We
can take a lawn from dirt all the way to the
finished product.”
GOOD OMEN
The Heins family has a long relationship
with John Deere equipment. Marilyn’s father
was a farmer who founded a Deere dealerWSJ / Summer

Heins Lawn & Landscape runs a John Deere
323E Compact Track Loader (CTL) and a
244J Compact Loader to keep up with its
workload. “We’re always going in different
directions at once, with three or four
projects going on at any given time,” says
Marilyn. “The ‘hurrier’ we go, the more
‘behinder’ we get, it always seems.”

hauling dirt or removing brush, to smoothing out lawns, to rolling sod,” says Aaron.
“We lift pallets with it. We clear brush. It’s
very versatile — the fundamental piece of
equipment we use on every job.”

for getting in and out of a jobsite without
damaging the surroundings or sensitive
turf,” says Aaron. “It has excellent all-around
visibility for safely working in tight spaces
and among numerous obstacles. And it’s
highly capable, giving you plenty of pushing
and lifting power.”
Easy to operate, too. “The hand controls are
very simple. And the cab is very spacious
and comfortable. The more comfortable I
am, the better job I do.”
Marilyn complains that she’s the one left
doing most of the shovel work, while the
guys work in the comfortable seat of the
air-conditioned, climate-controlled cab.
Aaron shrugs and smiles, not willing to
contradict Mom. “My grandmother was my
inspiration,” says Marilyn. “At 93, she’d be
out chopping thistle on the hottest day of
the year because it had to be done. If she
can do that, I can work hard, too.”
WORKHORSE
If the 323E is the mule, the company’s
244J is its workhorse, handling most of
the snow-moving tasks in winter, while
transferring pallets of seed, fertilizer, and
other materials year-round.
“The stereo steering and tight turn radius
help it easily navigate around tight areas. Its
reach, lift capability, and bucket capacity are
superb. I love this machine.”
Both the 323E and 244J have been absolutely reliable, and support from the local
John Deere dealer has been stellar. “They
have been great to us. We have a phenomenal dealer. They bend over backwards to
help us.”
Aaron recently demoed a 204K Compact
Loader and is also looking at possibly
upgrading to a 244K (see sidebar). “Right
now we’ve got the kind of equipment that
will take us into the next decade. I’ll keep
upgrading, but the future of our business
is looking really solid.”

John Deere compact wheel loaders are perfect for
loading landscape materials and many other tasks.
All K-Series Compact Loaders feature a low profile
that allows them to navigate with ease through low
entryways and narrow openings. Serious breakout
forces and solid full-turn tipping-load capacities make
these small-but-mighty machines plenty productive.
Get your 204K or 304K with an open canopy for quick
and easy entrance/exit, or opt for an air-conditioned/
heated cab and enjoy year-round comfort and ability.
Our new tight-turning, heavy-lifting 244K and
324K Loaders feature oscillating stereo steering
to deliver a smooth turning radius that’s
up to 17-percent tighter than comparable loaders — for faster cycle
times and better material
retention over

Deere compacts help landscaping business grow
Since 2008, Landscaping Etc., Inc. (LEI), in Millbury, Massachusetts, has tripled in size,
despite a challenging economic environment. The key is the term “et cetera”.
Landscape maintenance is LEI’s bread
and butter, accounting for about 40
percent of its business. Snow removal
accounts for another 40 percent, while
construction and other services generate
the remaining revenue. By diversifying,
LEI has become the go-to “one-stop
shop” for its customers.
WSJ / Summer
“We’re versatile,” says owner Steve Christy.
“We’ll do whatever our customers ask,
whether it’s maintenance, installation,
or plowing snow. We also do asphalt
and concrete work, as well as parkinglot maintenance, including collecting litter
and sweeping. I constantly look at my mix
of services to make sure we are delivering
what our customers need.”
Christy continually evaluates his equipment
mix, too, to make sure it delivers enough
productivity and uptime to keep up with his
company’s workload. John Deere skid steers
and compact excavators deliver the onetwo punch needed to complete many
landscaping tasks. “They work in tandem
— it’s the best of both worlds. The mini
excavators can work in a lot tighter spots
than backhoes, disturbing less area than you
would with a large wheeled machine. And
the skid steers are so versatile — we use
them to haul away dirt as well as load and
unload trees, sod, and pallets of bricks and
blocks. It’s a great combination.”
Operators like the cab comfort of both
the skid steers and compact excavators.
“They’re easy to get in and out of. There
is plenty of foot- and legroom. And the
controls are right at your fingertips —
they’re very responsive machines.”
A MAN, A MOWER, AND A MISSION
Christy attended college in Riverside,
California. “I loved football, but I was an
undersized lineman. When I didn’t get
any offers from larger schools in the area,
I went out to the West Coast.” Christy was
determined, and he started as a freshman.
After graduation, he was equally determined to succeed in business when he
returned home to northern Virginia.
GROWING TOGETHER
Uptime is everything to LEI. “Downtime
can kill you. But our John Deere machines
always run when we need them to. We
haven’t had any downtime with them,
except for regularly scheduled maintenance.”
Originally Christy planned on working in
hotel and restaurant management. “I got
tired of working nights, so during the day
I cut lawns with my mom’s mower. I was
making pretty good money cutting lawns,
so eventually I moved back to Worcester,
Massachusetts, and started this business
in 1987.”
Christy’s first clients were residential, but
he gradually switched over to commercial.
“I just kept knocking on doors. We still
maintain some of the accounts I acquired
when I started.”
Christy credits his success to his people:
“I’m blessed with a good core of people
who are very dedicated to this company.
I couldn’t have done this without them.”
DIGGING, HAULING, LOADING, ETC.
A few years ago when he decided to purchase skid steers, Christy had his operators
demo many different brands and put them
through numerous tests. “It was unanimous.
Everyone liked Deere the best.
They’re powerful little machines.”
Operators appreciate the excellent
visibility, which provides a view of
the action all around. “My operators are always talking about the
sightlines, which are great — especially to the rear, and that’s really
important. When you combine that

Steve Christy, owner, Landscaping Etc.
with the quickness, the power, and all the
different attachments you can use with
them, they’re extremely versatile machines.”
LEI also uses its John Deere skid steers
for snow removal. “They’re year-round
machines for us. With their compact size
and excellent visibility, they can get into
these areas without damaging anything.
They’re perfect.”
LEI’s local John Deere dealer provides
the parts and service support they need.
“Having a dealership in the area has been
key. They have been very responsive to our
needs, providing the parts and service we
need when we need them.”
Last winter, LEI was running poor-quality
snow pushers it had purchased from
another company’s dealer. “We asked our
Deere dealer to help us, and they came out
that day with pushers that were much better.
They really bailed us out. They are always
there for us when we need them.”
John Deere Financial has also been in
LEI’s corner. “The application process is
very quick, and you can’t beat their rates.
They’re phenomenal.
“John Deere is just a good partner to have.
I’ve been using John Deere since I started
buying mowers back in 1987. And we’re
still using them today. We hope to continue
this relationship into the future. They have
really helped us grow.”

THE
Jim Walker (left) and David Strayhorn (middle) of Affordable
Plumbing chat with their John Deere dealer representative,
Blayne Taylor of CL Boyd. According to Strayhorn, his dealership
treats him like family, much like he treats his own customers.
“WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS DO WE WANT TO BE?”
Affordable Plumbing has
built a successful business by
focusing on the customer
“It’s not just about getting the
job done. It’s about people. It’s
about providing customers with
what they expect, what they
deserve, and what they need.”
David Strayhorn, co-owner,
Affordable Plumbing
WSJ / Summer
That’s the question partners David Strayhorn
and Jim Walker asked themselves when they
started Affordable Plumbing in Arcadia,
Oklahoma, in 1999. “Above all, we knew
that to be successful, we needed to be very
customer focused,” recalls Strayhorn. “So we
actually sat down with customers and asked
them what they like and don’t like about the
people who’ve worked for them.
“It’s not just about getting the job done. It’s
about people. It’s about providing customers
with what they expect, what they deserve, and
what they need. That’s been the foundation
for our business for over 20 years, and it
always will be.”
Much like John Deere. “In Deere, we found
a company with the same beliefs we have. I
went to several other dealers looking to buy
equipment, but John Deere was different. We
were a small company, but that didn’t matter
to them. Unlike the others, they took the
time to sit down with us to make sure they
understood our needs. They made it very
clear they have our back at all times. We are
important. We matter. That’s how we treat our
customers, and it’s the philosophy that fuels
our company.”
DIGGING DEEP
After high school, Strayhorn joined the Army,
then got degrees in English and accounting
from Oklahoma State University followed
by a master’s in English from the University
of Alaska — not exactly a typical path for
someone in the plumbing business. “I worked
in my father’s shop, and he always championed getting a college degree as a way to get
ahead. So I got a degree in accounting and
then went to graduate school for English.”
Strayhorn admits he didn’t know much about
plumbing when the company got its start.
“It was a licensed trade that was in demand
because nobody wanted to do it. It’s very hard,
dirty work. But people are always looking
for plumbers. We were two crazy kids out
of college looking for work, but I grew up
around the trades and equipment. I fell in
love with it — it was the perfect opportunity.”
Walker was driving trucks cross-country at
the time and wanted a different career. He
trained at Mid-Del Technology Center in
Midwest City, Oklahoma, where he was
recognized as Outstanding Adult Plumbing
Student of the Year. “That’s where I became

LETTER TO JOHN DEERE
Dear Sir or Madam:

to take half a day.
fully committed to becoming a plumber. And
David was such a perfect fit for the company
— he had a vision and has taken it to places
I could never have taken it on my own.”
GAME OF INCHES
Tasks that used to take half a day now take
20 minutes with the company’s John Deere
17D Compact Excavator. “It has cut our
production time by leaps and bounds. It has
made our job a lot easier and makes us more
competitive.”
“The 17D helps us meet the needs of our
customers faster,” adds Walker. “Before,
we would tie up a customer’s house for two
days, and now we can do the job in a single
day. We’re in and out.”
Strayhorn likes Deere equipment because it
just feels natural. “I’ve operated just about
every brand out there, and the 17D feels like
an extension of me. It’s perfectly balanced
and powerful enough to handle the tough
Oklahoma soil. Yet it’s small enough to work
in tight residential areas — the undercarriage
can be retracted to fit through narrow openings. And the machine is very comfortable
— it’s a genuine pleasure to operate.”
The 17D provides the feel the operator needs
to do the type of work Affordable Plumbing
does. “It’s so responsive that if we hit an
unmarked line — like a natural gas, telephone, or fiber-optic line — we know before
we damage it. Our work is a game of inches.
That’s why good equipment is imperative.”
PLUMBERS TO THE CORE
Affordable Plumbing never lets its customers
down. And its John Deere 17D Excavator has
never let them down. “It always runs,” says
Strayhorn. “And on difficult digs it has never
failed to perform.”
Service from local John Deere dealer, CL
Boyd, has been equally dependable. “Service
is over the top,” says Walker. “We’re a small
company, so we start at six in the morning
and finish sometimes at seven, eight, or nine
at night. Our John Deere dealership is always
there for us, anytime we need them, anywhere
we go.”
“I’ve never had to worry about a part, filter,
or bottle of oil — they’ll bring it right out
to us. Now that’s customer support,” adds
Strayhorn. “It’s worry free!”
Strayhorn was so impressed with Deere
he was inspired to write a message on the
manufacturer’s website (see sidebar). The
note made the rounds at John Deere and
eventually found its way to CL Boyd. Kelly
Granatier, Director Sales, U.S. & Canada,
read the letter at the opening dinner of the
John Deere Onyx Circle in Ireland, an event
recognizing top-performing Deere dealers.
“I can’t say enough good things about
John Deere,” says Strayhorn. “They take
a personal interest in our success, not just
as customers but as family. And that’s
important because we’re a family-centered
company. We have a great group of guys.
We’re plumbers to the core.”
I just wanted to say something
about my recent experience with
John Deere in Oklahoma City. Our
company was in the market for
a piece of digging equipment to
prevent having to rent every time
we needed to work on lines in the
ground. I found your dealer here in
Oklahoma City engaging, extremely
personable, and ready to meet
me face to face to help our small
company find the right equipment
for us. I’ve always been very partial
to John Deere machinery, but
machinery aside, the people you
have representing you account
for the entirety of the experience.
When other salesmen and reps
failed to take us seriously because
we are a small company, your dealer
here was right there to help us every
step of the way through the selection
process and the sale. I also feel very
confident having these people on our
team because even your competitor
responded that they are impossible to
beat when it comes to taking care of
their customers. That alone says a lot
about your representatives here in
Oklahoma when the competition
admits that your reps are the only
real competition they have in the
equipment market. I don’t know
how John Deere compliments their
dealers, but yours here in Oklahoma
City went the extra mile and was
a genuine pleasure to work with
during our equipment purchase.
They deserve more of a thank you
than we can give.
Sincerely,
David Strayhorn

ROTARY CUTTER
Looking for an instant rise in productivity? Add a Worksite Pro™ attachment. Our
ever-expanding lineup includes nearly 100 models, so you’re sure to find the right
tool for the job. In this issue, we discuss our new RS72 ROTARY CUTTER.
Designed for extreme-duty applications, our newest Rotary Cutter
excels at clearing medium to heavy brush and hardwoods up to
18 cm (7 in.) in diameter. The powerful RS72 model features a
direct drivetrain with no gearbox, for improved performance,
durability, and reliability.
Like all Worksite Pro attachments, the new RS72 Rotary Cutter
is optimized to work with select John Deere E- and D-Series Skid
Steers and Compact Track Loaders (CTLs). It is also compatible with
most comparable competitive models. See your local John Deere
dealer for details.
Four alternating bevel blades provide a deep, self-clearing cut and
are made of 19.1-mm (0.75 in.)-thick high-grade steel with reversible
design for long life. A standard pressure gauge allows the operator
to easily monitor blade load to prevent overheating and overloading.
Retractable forward shield moves up and away when it comes in contact with a tree to expose the entire cutting edge, while protecting the
operator from flying debris.
