In AP English 3, we will
 write in various forms such as narrative, expository, descriptive, and argumentative
 read and discuss various perspectives on controversial issues in society
 evaluate, use, and implement research skills such as citing primary and secondary sources using Modern
Language Association format
 develop a wide-range of vocabulary, sentence structure, logical organization, and illustrative detail
 develop an effective use of rhetoric including controlling tone, establishing voice, and use diction and
sentence structure to achieve an intended effect
 prepare for success on the College Board’s English Language and Composition Exam
SUMMER READING:
During the summer, it is required that you read the following books and complete the projects.
 Tuesday’s With Morrie by Mitch Albom
 Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman
These books can be purchased through local bookstores or checked out free from the public library. It is the
student’s responsibility to contact the teacher if he/she cannot locate a copy of any one of these books.

Expectations for the beginning of the fall semester:
 Students will use their reading of these two texts as we study two methods of writing: narration and
argumentation.
 Students are required to complete a project after reading Tuesdays with Morrie. Instructions for
completing this project are on the back. This will be due the 1st week of school!
 Students are required to fully read Amusing Ourselves to Death and complete a project.
This will be due the 4th week of school!

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
PHOTO PROJECT
Directions: Create a photo presentation using 10 original photos (from your personal albums) to demonstrate your
understanding of 10 quotes from the book Tuesdays with Morrie. Follow the steps below.
Step 1. Choose 10 quotes that made an impression on you while reading the book. Record page numbers and along with
the entire quote. Do not excerpt (select only parts of) sentences.
Step 2. Look through personal photo albums and select 10 different photos that represent the 10 different quotes you
selected from the book. (Black and white photos might add an artistic touch to your presentation.)
Step 3. Use a neat, creative, and organized method for displaying your project. (Some ideas: poster board, mobile,
scrapbook, calendar, etc.) Do NOT use a computer program.
Step 4. Display the following: 1.) Personal photo that represents the quote 2.) Quote from book, including page number
3.) The context of the quote (*speaker- who said it? *audience- to whom was he/she speaking *subject- what were they
discussing?) and 4.) Your interpretation of the quote and explain how the photo represents the quote
Step 5. Share with your family/friends and discuss what this book taught you.
Your photos for this project must be original—meaning they are photos that you
take for this project or that you use from family albums to fit a life lesson from the
book. You should NOT use clip art or Internet images to fulfill the assignment.

Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman
MEDIA PROJECT
Step 1. Identify Postman’s argument on how media affects the following areas of society: News (Ch. 7), Religion (Ch. 8),
Politics (Ch. 9) and Education (Ch. 10)
Step 2. Find a quote that demonstrates how each of these institutions is impacted by media directly from the text and
record page numbers for these quotes.
Step 3. Find visuals that represents the impact Postman claims media has on News, Religion, Politics, and Education.
This visual can be from clipart, web images, or even personal photos.
Step 4. Explain what Postman means in the quote you selected (how does he explain the impact media has on that area of
society?) and explain how the visual you selected represents Postman’s meaning.
Step 5. Write a paragraph in which you discuss your thoughts on Postman’s claims of how media impacts that area of
society.
Step 6. Display all parts of this project in a booklet or on a project board. Do NOT use a computer program.
Grading
Identify Postman’s arguments for the 4 areas of society
Identify and cite a direct quote from text that clearly identifies Postman’s claim
Use visuals to represent each of Postman’s claims on the 4 institutions
Explain/interpret the direct quote
Discuss thoughts on Postman’s claims and defend opinions
