There are two different types of democracy. You will learn about direct and representative democracy. Democracy in the United

States is similar to the democracy that was Ancient Greece.

Democracy means “government by the people”. In a democracy, people vote to choose their leaders, and to make decisions.

Ancient Greece had a form of democracy that is known as a direct democracy. In Ancient Greece, decisions and leaders were voted directly by the citizens. The citizens gather to vote on all issues directly. Not everyone could vote though. You had to be a land owner, you could not be a woman, you could not be a slave, you had to be born in Greece, and you had to be an adult.. This direct democracy left people out.

The United States has a representative democracy. A representative democracy is a form of government where citizens vote for representatives to make decisions for them. The representatives then vote to make laws that represent the ideas of the people who elected them. It is still a democracy because the government is still ruled by the people. We still elect our representatives who vote for us. It would be impossible to have all

United States citizens vote on every issue or every law that was being voted on. To vote for a representative you have to be at least eighteen years old and not commit serious crimes.
