Introduction to The Breast
Assessment Clinic
Here are the answers to some of
the questions most frequently
asked by those we recall. We
hope that you will find this
information useful.
What does it mean when I am
called back?
Breast screening for some
women involves two visits to the
centre. This is because the
mammogram has shown an area
that needs to be checked more
closely. The majority of women
who are recalled are found to
have no problems.
What further tests may I need?
You may have both or only one of
the following tests:
•
Further X-rays. It may be
necessary to have
additional films taken.
These are usually different
views from the original
mammogram.
Ultrasound scan. This is
another way the doctor can
gain information about your
breast tissue, this time using
sound waves. The test is
completely painless.
If you are recalled you will have a
physical examination of both breasts
carried out by a specialist doctor.
Will I get the results at the clinic?
When the above tests have been
performed, the results will be
discussed with you, then and there.
Most women do not require any
further investigation and will be
offered screening every three years
as before.
What if I still need further tests?
If any further tests are required,
these will be discussed with you and
the type of test will be explained
thoroughly.
Every effort is made to perform any
further tests at the same visit. If this
is not possible an appointment will
be arranged.
Remember that most women who
are recalled are found to have no
problems with their breasts.
Please do not hesitate to contact
the Breast Screening Centre if
you have any further queries
about any aspect of your
screening.
A specialist Breast Care Nurse is
available at the centre to
provide confidential counselling
and answer any questions you
may have.
