2013 ANNUAL REPORT Fiscal Year 2013: JULY 1, 2012 - JUNE 30, 2013 CFOV REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2013 1 DEAR FRIENDS OF THE FOUNDATION, We are pleased to present the 2013 Annual Report of the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley. The year was one of growth for the organization beginning with a merger with the Community Foundation of Jefferson County. The former Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Jefferson County has now become the Jefferson County Advisory Committee of the CFOV, meeting quarterly to continue the philanthropic work they began. Two of their members, Christine Hargrave and Jody Glaub, are now members of the CFOV board. We hope you’ll take a moment to read about the activities of some of their funds on page 8. In Fiscal Year 2013, the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley made more than $1.5 million in grants and scholarships. This is an increase of approximately $400,000 more than last fiscal year. The assets of the foundation have also increased and are more than $30 million. We continue to work with donors who have benefitted from the emerging oil and gas industry in our region. Our work is supported by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. It is interesting to note that Michael Benedum’s fortune was created by the oil boom of a hundred years ago. We are grateful to our partners at Benedum for seeing the importance of transforming this new wealth into philanthropy. On the cover: Amanda Cummins PA-C, Clinical Director of Wheeling Health Right Children enjoying an after school snack at The Neighborhood House in Steubenville Joyce Hinkle of the Joy Cox Memorial Nursing Scholarship and scholarship winner Ashley Burris Students at Wheeling Middle School participate in a screen printing activity funded by CFOV Special needs students at Woodsdale Elementary School use iPads purchased through a grant from CFOV. The summer of 2013 brought with it a unique opportunity to reach our community’s young adults with the Civic Leaders Fellowship Program. Funding was provided to give local college students paid internships in their field of study. It is our hope that this experience helped them realize that there are wonderful job opportunities right here in the Ohio Valley. You can read more about the Civic Leaders Program on page 10. In January 2013, the CFOV lost Jerry Schmitt to cancer. Jerry was the President of the Board of Trustees and a long-time member of the board. His leadership helped the foundation become a leader in philanthropy in the Ohio Valley. Please read our tribute to Jerry and learn how he will be remembered on page 7. We are dedicated to continuing the tradition of providing the vehicle through which people in the Ohio Valley can give back to their communities. We are thankful to all of the donors who have established funds with us to carry out their philanthropic goals and benefit our communities. We answer questions and provide guidance to help your clients define and reach their charitable giving goals. Because we are a community foundation, we are uniquely positioned to offer prospective donors a variety of giving options. We can create gift illustrations for you and consult with you and your client on questions such as: • WHY CREATE A CHARITABLE FUND RATHER THAN MAKING AN OUTRIGHT GIFT TO A CHARITY? • WHAT ARE THE TAX ADVANTAGES OF CREATING A CHARITABLE FUND? • HOW CAN I LEAVE SOMETHING FOR MY CHILDREN AND ALSO GIVE TO CHARITY? • WHAT STEPS ARE NEEDED TO ESTABLISH A FUND AT THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION? PHILATHROPY CAN BE MADE EASY. HERE ARE SIX SIMPLE STEPS: • DISCUSS YOUR OVERALL PHILANTHROPIC GOALS WITH YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS AND LEGAL OR TAX ADVISORS. • DECIDE HOW MUCH YOU CAN AFFORD TO GIVE. • DETERMINE THE CAUSES/ORGANIZATIONS THAT WILL USE YOUR DONATIONS TO MEET THE GOALS YOU SUPPORT. • MEET WITH FOUNDATION STAFF TO DISCUSS YOUR PLAN. • ASK QUESTIONS, EXPLORE THE DIFFERENT GIFT VEHICLES. • GET STARTED! 4 CFOV REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2013 Fiscal Year 2013: JULY 1, 2012 - JUNE 30, 2013 TYPES OF FUNDS DONOR ADVISED FUNDS Donor Advised Funds support recommendations by the donor of distributions to qualified charitable organizations. DONOR DESIGNATED FUNDS Donor Designated Funds permit the support of specific charitable organizations. The fund remains relevant over time and is responsive to changing circumstances. FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS Field of Interest Funds focus on issues of concern such as health services, the environment, economic development, human services, education, children and youth, and the arts. UNRESTRICTED FUNDS Unrestricted Funds are not restricted by the donor for any one purpose; instead, they are used to support the changing needs of our community. This is the most flexible type of fund. SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS Scholarship Funds recognize achievement and provide financial support to students who wish to further their education. Donors may specify selection criteria, such as attendance at a specific college, technical school, or university. AGENCY ENDOWMENT FUNDS Agency Endowment Funds support specific nonprofit organizations. The income earned promotes the ongoing purposes of those organizations. An agency endowment is a way to build a nest egg and attract future endowment gifts. Fiscal Year 2013: JULY 1, 2012 - JUNE 30, 2013 CFOV REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2013 5 COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR THE OHIO VALLEY LEGACY SOCIETY At the Community Foundation, one of our missions is to look to the future and plan ways we can continue to meet the needs of the communities we serve. One of the most important ways we do this is by working with donors who have a sense of that vision for tomorrow. Through their generosity, their legacies help secure a strong and viable future. By planning gifts to the Community Foundation through their wills and estates, these donors demonstrate a deep and lasting commitment. The CFOV Legacy Society was formed to formally recognize donors who have planned a gift to the Community Foundation upon their death. Whether they are direct bequests, gifts of life insurance, or other assets, these gifts all reflect a shared desire to secure a strong future for our community. In 2013, the Community Foundation inducted the following donors into the Legacy Society in honor of their commitment to the future: ROBERT AND CHRISTINE HARGRAVE LARRY AND MARY DEE BANDI H. LAWRENCE JONES, ED.D. For more information on how you can become a member of the Legacy Society, please contact the Community Foundation by calling 304-242-3144 or emailing INFO@CFOV.ORG. 6 CFOV REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2013 Fiscal Year 2013: JULY 1, 2012 - JUNE 30, 2013 IN MEMORY OF JEROME B.
