UNDERGRADUATE ACCOMMODATION
AT CANTERBURY (CONT)
Kent is one of only a few universities
in the UK to offer accommodation
in a college environment. As well
as student accommodation, colleges
have academic teaching and lecture
facilities, social areas, staff offices,

dedicated building.
The colleges at Kent have their own distinctive
character and offer a lively, welcoming and diverse
community where it’s easy to make new friends with
students from around the world.
Darwin College offers self-catering accommodation.
Rooms have shared bathroom facilities and access
to large, shared kitchens.
Eliot and Rutherford Colleges offer bed and breakfast
accommodation. Rooms are arranged in corridors,
with shared toilet and shower/bath facilities. Corridors
include a small kitchenette containing a fridge, kettle
and microwave, where students can prepare hot
drinks and light snacks. Breakfast is served in
Rutherford dining hall and on days where breakfast
is not eaten, you may use the breakfast allowance
towards an evening meal in the dining hall.
Keynes College and Becket Court offer bed and
bistro accommodation. All rooms have en-suite
facilities and residents have access to a small
kitchenette (as in Eliot and Rutherford Colleges).
Weekday breakfasts and evening meals are served
in Keynes College’s bistro, Dolche Vita, and at

OFF CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION
AT CANTERBURY
Accredited housing
Second to final-year students
Canterbury has an accreditation scheme for student
housing, which is designed to recognise landlords
who are concerned for the health, safety and welfare
of their student tenants. These landlords have
agreed to follow a Code of Conduct to ensure the
fair, efficient management of their properties, to
confirm that they are of a high standard and that they
meet all legal obligations. All students are advised
to only rent property from accredited landlords, who
are members of this scheme. Details can be found
at www.canterburystudenthousing.org.uk
Second to final-year students are expected to join
with friends to rent houses or flats off campus.
New students
We strongly advise any new students, to
whom we are unable to offer University campus
accommodation, to arrange a short stay in a guest
house or hotel prior to arrival in Canterbury. This will
enable you to personally view the various types of
off-campus accommodation available and make the
choice that most closely matches your budget and
other requirements. It is not advisable to agree to
rent any private accommodation unseen over the
telephone. We regret the university cannot book
off-campus accommodation on behalf of students.
Details of local guest houses and hotels are available
from the Canterbury Visitor Centre, T: +44 (0)1227
378100, www.canterbury.co.uk/accommodation
The 2012/13 rental levels for a single room in a
shared self-catering house off-campus range from
£85 to £100 a week, excluding utility bills. Most
private landlords require students to enter into
housing agreements that cover 52 weeks.
The Accommodation Office website contains a
housing guide that can be downloaded and links
to maps, plus useful information about renting
properties in the local area. There is also a
message board and Facebook pages where you
can exchange information with fellow students.
Kent and Canterbury
The county of Kent, which is known as the ‘Garden
of England’, offers you the opportunity to live and
study in one of the most picturesque areas of the
country. The nearest coastal town to Canterbury is
Whitstable, where you can get involved in many water
sports including windsurfing, yachting and waterskiing. The seaside towns of Herne Bay, Broadstairs,
Ramsgate, Deal and Margate are also close by. Kent
is renowned for its historical past and Canterbury is
within a short travelling distance of a number of
historic sites.
During your second and third years, you can
choose to live in Canterbury or in the local towns
of Whitstable, Herne Bay and Faversham, which are
on bus routes to Canterbury and have direct rail links
to London.
Canterbury is a small city with a warm and studentfriendly atmosphere, and is only 25 minutes’ walk
from the campus. Much of its medieval history shows
in ancient streets and buildings, and the city centre
has a thriving cosmopolitan atmosphere, as befits
Britain’s closest city to continental Europe.
Transport links
Canterbury is only 56 miles from London on the
M2/A2. Regular trains run to and from London St
Pancras, London Victoria, Charing Cross, Waterloo
East and London Bridge. The journey time is
approximately 60-90 minutes.
There is a frequent, inexpensive coach service to
London and destinations beyond.
It is a 30-minute drive from the Canterbury campus
to the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone or the Eurostar
terminal at Ashford, from where you can be in Paris
or Brussels in about two hours.
DID YOU KNOW?
Canterbury was rated as the safest
university city in England and Wales
in The Complete University Guide
2012.

THE MEDWAY REGION
The Medway towns of Chatham,
Gillingham, Rochester and Strood
stand on the mouth of the river
Medway, where it flows into the
Thames estuary. The University
of Kent’s Medway campus is part
of Chatham Maritime, where the
Historic Dockyard is being
redeveloped and refurbished.
Chatham Maritime includes a new multiplex cinema,
restaurant, a large retail outlet and the Strand Leisure
Park, all within walking distance of the Medway
campus.
History, culture and leisure
Medway has a rich and fascinating history. Rochester
Castle was one of the first large stone keeps built by
William the Conqueror after the Norman Conquest,
while Rochester Cathedral – where Kent holds its
Medway graduation ceremonies – is more than 1,400
years old. Medway also has a distinguished naval
history – the first ship built at Chatham’s Dockyard
took part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Lord
Horatio Nelson joined his first ship at Chatham, and
his famous flagship, The Victory, was built here.
One of Medway’s most famous inhabitants was
Charles Dickens, who lived in Chatham as a child,
and later at Gadshill Place, Rochester, for 14 years
until his death. The Medway region also features
in many Dickens novels. Every year, the Dickens
Festival celebrates his legacy and there is a new
£62 million Dickens World tourist attraction at
Chatham Maritime.
The Medway area includes a range of sporting
facilities, such as a dry ski slope and toboggan run,
an ice rink, a go-kart circuit, an Olympic-standard
trampoline centre and a number of sports and
leisure centres. Water sports are also a popular
feature around the waterfront near the campus.
To enhance Medway’s sports facilities, the University
of Kent has committed £3 million towards the
creation of Medway Park, a regional centre of
sporting excellence. This £11 million facility provides
a multi-sport, state-of-the-art complex within easy
reach of the campus. Kent students receive
preferential rates to use its sports halls, pools,
squash courts, and health suite and spa. Medway
Park was approved as a pre-Games training camp
venue for 13 Olympic and eight Paralympic sports.
Transport links
Medway has excellent rail links and is well served
by the M2, M20 and M25 motorways. Heathrow and
Gatwick airports, the Channel ports of Dover and
Ramsgate, and the Channel Tunnel are all around
an hour’s drive away. There are direct rail links to
London Victoria and Charing Cross – approximately
45 minutes journey time. This journey time has been
reduced even further with the introduction of a
17-minute service from Ebbsfleet International
to London St Pancras. Ebbsfleet International
also provides a new Channel Tunnel rail link to
the continent.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Chatham Maritime area,where
the Medway campus is located, has
been shortlisted for UNESCO World
Heritage status. The site includes
the River Medway and Chatham
Historic Dockyard.

EUROPEAN LOCATIONS:
BRUSSELS, PARIS AND ATHENS
University of Kent, Brussels
Accommodation
Kent does not offer University accommodation in
Brussels, but there are many affordable private rental
options available and students usually find a place
to live shortly after arrival. Studio apartments with
all charges included (water, electricity, gas, tenant
charges) cost around €550-650 per month.
A one-bedroom apartment with all charges included
is around €650-750 per month. Students who
arrange flat-shares are often able to reduce costs
even further.
As the University of Kent at Brussels’ facilities are
conveniently located in the student district between
our partner universities, Vrije Universiteit Brussel
(VUB) and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB),
much of the housing within a short walking distance
of the University is designed for students in layout
and price.
Notices of available apartments, many of which
are being vacated by outgoing University of Kent
at Brussels students, are also sent through the
incoming student LISTSERV.
Modern city campus
The University of Kent at Brussels has its own
purpose-designed facilities, a 15-minute drive from
the centre of Brussels and close to a metro station,
a train station and regular bus and tram services.
Kent students have full access to all the facilities
on the VUB and ULB campuses, including libraries,
public computers, bars, cafés and sports facilities.
Local attractions
Brussels is a diverse city, with architecture ranging
from medieval rampart walls to the impressive
modern architecture built to house several institutions
of the European Union. Popular attractions in the city
include the Grand Place Square with its Gothic and
baroque architecture, the 15th-century Hôtel de Ville,
and the Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula.
Brussels has over 80 museums and many beautiful
parks and open spaces, including the Parc du
Cinquantenaire.
Etterbeek train station is 50 metres from the
University of Kent at Brussels offices and provides
regular connections with Schuman, Brussels North
and Brussels Midi stations. Tram lines 23, 24 and 90
also stop at Etterbeek and the University is a short
walk, across the VUB Etterbeek campus, from the
Pétillon metro station.
Transport links
While Brussels is a relatively small city for a European
capital and is easy to get around on foot, the public
transport system is very good and makes it easy to
get quickly from place to place within the city. Buses,
trams and metros run on a regular schedule and are
generally very reliable.
Brussels has excellent transport links with other
European cities. For instance, Paris is only two hours
away by train and Ashford (near our Canterbury
campus), Ebbsfleet (near our Medway campus)
and London can be reached by Eurostar in under
two hours. Brussels also has a major international
airport.

University of Kent, Paris
Accommodation
The University of Kent has a shared programme of
courses in Canterbury and Paris. Students studying
as part of the University of Kent at Paris programme
may choose to live in University on-campus
accommodation while studying at the Canterbury
campus. To apply for University accommodation,
please contact the Accommodation Office for advice.
We offer advice to help you to find suitable
accommodation for the duration of your studies in
Paris. One option is to stay with a host family in the
city. There are also several organisations to help
students find short-term accommodation in Paris,
as well as private accommodation agencies.
Another source of information is the Francofil
mailing list, which is used by short-term students
seeking/offering accommodation in Paris. Our
European Office also has up-to-date information
and resources, recommendations from returning
students, contacts in Parisian universities and many
years of experience in advising students seeking
accommodation in Paris.
Location
Our Paris centre is situated at Reid Hall, in the
historic heart of Montparnasse. It’s only a few
minutes’ walk from the Jardin du Luxembourg, which
is an expansive, classically designed park, much
frequented by students from the Sorbonne and other
universities. Reid Hall occupies traditional buildings
grouped around two quiet and leafy inner courtyards.
It was founded as a porcelain factory in the 18th
19
century and has served as a centre for teaching
and research since 1834. Kent postgraduates
use facilities at Reid Hall alongside postgraduate
students from Columbia University, Barnard College,
University of Florida and other similarly prestigious
institutions.
Transport links
During your time in Paris, you will benefit from
excellent transport links. The city is served by three
main airports – Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, Orly and
Beauvais Tille – offering international and domestic
connections.
The Eurostar services to Lille, London, Ebbsfleet and
Ashford (near Canterbury) all depart from the Gare
du Nord station in the centre of Paris and high-speed
Thalys trains connect you to Brussels and other
northern European cities.
Within Paris city centre, the famous metro system
and an excellent city bus network means you will
be able to discover the city easily and cheaply.
Suburban train services, Réseau Express Régional
(RER), connect you directly to the airports and other
main train stations. Reid Hall is a five-minute walk
from the metro stations Vavin and Raspail and close
to the RER station Port-Royal, where you can take a
direct train to the Gare du Nord.

Athens
Accommodation
Kent does not offer University accommodation
in Athens but a list of suitable accommodation
in Eleusina or central Athens is provided to all
students studying on the Heritage Management MA.
We also offer advice on arranging your own rented
accommodation and liaise with landlords on your
behalf. Please contact the local administrator for
more information (heritage@aueb.gr).
Location
The programme is ideally located in the Athenian
suburb of Eleusina, the birthplace of Aeschylus and
one of the most important archaeological religious
sites in the world as a location of the Eleusinian
mysteries. The centre of Athens is only 30km away,
and as such you have close access to many other
major historical sites including the Parthenon,
Ancient Corinth, Nemea and Thebes.
Transport links
Athens is served by Eleftherios Venizelos
International Airport 35km away. The city has
excellent transport links, including buses, and
a commuter rail, metro and tram service.

was it convenient, being so close to where
everything happens, but sharing a corridor

people and making friends when you first
