PRESIDENT’S
REPORT
We are almost 6 months into the year and the time is passing so quickly. I will be
finishing my second year as President and I have decided I would like to continue on for
another year if re-elected. If you are interested in any position please remember to first
check that you are a member and nomination forms will soon be available.
Have you seen all the photos on the VLDA Website? Click on the tab under the main
heading on the home page and it will take you to the photo gallery where you will find
many photos of the Portarlington event and the Good Friday Marathon. A reminder to
join our facebook page. Email one of the Committee or send a message to the facebook
page and we will add you to the group.
The list of dances for the ball are on the website. Keith has gone to a lot of trouble
organizing the split floor dances. This is not an easy task, but one I am sure he has done
very well. If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, please send your requests in soon.
All the pricing and payment information is on the Ball Flyer which is available on the
website on the Line Dance Events page.
Once again we have special guests Simon Ward, Maddison Glover and also Elise Spinks will be coming all the way
from Sydney to demonstrate their award winning competition dance. Simon will again commence his workshop at 4pm
till approximately 5pm. Last year Simon taught two dances, Bang Bang and Beautiful In My Eyes, which became two
of the most popular dances, not only in Australia but World Wide.
The Ball will commence at 6 pm and finish at midnight. The theme is black and gold and I am sure the night will again
be a memorable night for all.
Another exciting huge event will be held over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. The Victorian Line Dance
Association is proud to be one of the major sponsors for The Southern State Line Dancing Championships. Competition
dancing will commence on Saturday 8th June for the whole day followed by a social in the evening at 7 pm. On Sunday
morning the competition dancing will commence again followed by another Social at 6 pm. The Theme for the social
on Saturday night will be “Back in Time” – Come dressed in any era from the 1900’s and the theme on Sunday night
will be “Fluoro Party” – come dressed in your most colourful bright fluoro outfits. Further information is on their
website. Visit http://ssldc.weebly.com.
If you would like to continue dancing on Monday, head out to the East Doncaster Hall, Corner Blackburn and Anderson
Creek Road. Travis Taylor, choreographer of many wonderful dances such as I Missed You, Cry, Help Me Help Me,
Heaven On Earth, Pieces Don’t Fit and Drop On By will be holding a 3 hour workshop commencing at 1 pm. Travis
will also be one of the judges at the Southern State Line Dance Championship, so we welcome Travis to Victoria and
look forward to his learning his new dances.
Hope to see you at one or all of the above events. Until then, stay warm, take care and keep dancing.

BALL
2 013
Can you help? We are looking for helpers with the tea & coffee facility at the Ball. Specifically, we need the urns continually topped up during the evening, supplies of tea, coffee & cups maintained, and spillages cleaned up.
We either need a number of dancers, who don’t need to be dancing all night, to help out with this
facility throughout the night on perhaps a roster system; or, alternatively, a better solution might be
to have one or two non-dancers (perhaps a friend or relative) to be given this job for a small
remuneration. Please contact me if you can assist in this area.
Ball Bus: For interstate and country visitors coming to the Ball, who are staying in the Melbourne
CBD, the VLDA is again offering to provide bus transport to and from the Ball venue. The
(subsidised) cost is $15 per head. If you would like to take advantage of this offer please let me as
soon as possible. This can include transport to the Workshop and Ball, or to the Ball only.

Workshop in Kerang on 18th May was a fun
afternoon and night, Jan and Sheena from
Kerang Bootscooters organized the day to
raise money for the oncology unit at the
Kerang Hospital . Workshop afternoon was
good, then off to the club for a beautiful
dinner, then back to the hall for dancing and
more food, with a “country supper”, had a
terrific time and it was good to see some
money raised for a great cause. Thank you to
the dancers who travelled to support this
event.

W.A. workshops were a great deal of fun, had a great time in Perth at the TGIF 10th birthday on
Friday night, and then out to True Country Bootscooters in York (WA’s first inland town) on
Saturday. Every one had a good time at both events with a great mixture of dances on both social
programs. Was wonderful to see so many people still enjoying line dancing.

L.V COUNTRY LINE DANCERS & REBEL BOOTSCOOTERS
HIT NORFOLK ISLAND...AGAIN
Once again we took a trip over to the Beautiful Norfolk Island for
the Country Music Festival. Our welcome to the island was
torrential rain and apparently we were about 3 minutes away from
being sent back to Sydney but fortunately we were able to land, even
tho we got a good soaking disembarking the plane.
If you have never been to this island, it is very much worth the trip.
Extremely pretty and just steeped in history. The weather was a
little unkind to us but as soon as the sun was shining we made the
most of it. The Group was invited down to the market to dance with
local singer, Trent Christian. The locals enjoyed watching with a
few even joining in. We also enjoyed a night of line dancing with
their local group which includes a number of children who had been
practicing for a performance that they put on at school. So they were keen to give us a demo.
We did do the Valley proud by once again winning the Rolling Pin
award at the Convict night. For all those who
have been to Norfolk will understand how
prestigious this award is, but one that actually
needs to be seen to be understood, but the
night was an absolute hoot.
The RSL let us take over their floor with our
own music so we got to dance the night away.
One of our Line Dancers, Jenny, even tried
her hand at Karaoke with a local singer,
Brandt McRitchie…..ahhh she did us proud.
We danced, ate, took a huge amount of
photos and for a tiny island, they have
some great shops, which we kindly help
their economy and just hoped that our
cases were under the weight for the trip
home. Tis very much worth a trip over
and they all made us feel so welcome it
was a little sad to leave...

Kay Blakeley’s Tassie Workshop 2013
The Bootscootin’ Devil Line Dancers from Tassie recently hosted a workshop with Kay Blakeley in Ulverstone
Tasmania. 100 line dancers from across Tasmania and from the mainland enjoyed a packed weekend of activities.
The weekend started for some on Thursday when the Devils arrived at the airport in a bus to pick up mainland visitors.
A stop on the way home at the Ashgrove Cheese Factory for a light snack and of course to taste the cheeses. A get
together with the visitors for a counter meal at a local pub for tea that night then it was around to the hall for the Devils
to set up & decorate. This years theme was “Something in the Water” so the main colours were blue & green with lots
of sea creatures adorning the walls.
Friday night was “Meet & Greet” with a 2 course meal which was followed by a line dance social. There were lots of
split floor dances with beginner dances at the front of the hall. We encourage our beginners to attend and try to cater
for them with the playlist to have them on the floor as much as possible.
Saturday there was a morning & an afternoon workshop with a light lunch provided in between. 11 dances were taught
with a good mix of music and dances. They were
1. Rocket to the Sun (Maddison Glover)
2. Baby I Know It (Peter & Alison)
3. Stuck On You (Anne Herd)
4. You Ain’t Alone (Richard Guillaume)
5. Heavens Question (Maddison & Tom Glover
6. Nuovo Mambo (Tim Gauci)
7. Lookabell (Niels Poulson)
8. Hearts Don’t Lie (Jo & John Kinser)
9. Bring It Over (Leslie Clark)
10. Can’t Shake You (Alison & Peter)
11. Leave You Alone (Jose Miguel Vane & Joey Warren)
Saturday night was the Something in the Water theme and the outfits were
amazing. A lot of people go to a lot of trouble and some have a great imagination, they all looked great. It was a different playlist to Friday night so we
didn’t double up on dances and also a few from the workshop were included
during the night. There were quite a few dances on the playlist which related
to the theme & included Fishing in the Dark, Sea Wolves, Waterlogged,
Botany Bay, Alligator Walk, Deep River just to name a few.
The weekend didn’t finish there, especially for our mainland visitors. A
“gourmet” mystery bus tour had been organised for the Sunday following an
all you can eat buffet breakfast at a local café. The first stop on the tour was
at 41 degrees South, a Salmon farm, and then a wine tasting at a small
boutique winery. This was followed by a stop at Mole Creek where we had
lunch in the Tassie Tiger Bar. Then it was a short drive to Chudleigh (unfortunately the Honey Farm was closed) but
we called in to the Silk & Roses place where we tasted the yummy fudges which are made on site. The Spreyton
Cidery was next for a tasting & our final stop, & everyone’s favourite, Anvers Chocolate Factory at Latrobe. It was a
great day out, the weather was perfect and our tour guide, Tarni, is a lot of fun.
She has been booked again for next year.
The dates for the workshop in 2014 is 25 th – 27th April and the theme is “Back to
the Fifties” and will include lunch at a Fifties Diner on the bus tour on Sunday. So
mark it in your calendar now, we promise it will be a great weekend & we’d love
to see you there.
Our thanks to Kay for another excellent workshop and to everyone who attended
over the weekend, without them, the weekend wouldn’t have been the success
that it was. So from the Bootscootin’ Devils we Thank You!

Freaky Friday
Witches, ghouls and ghosts were in abundance at Dancin' Lines' Freaky
Friday social in May. The Addams Family made an appearance and then we
had dancing to the Monster Mash and Thriller. Thanks to everyone who came
along, dressed up in the theme, and helped make it a great night. The photo
shows the Addams Family with some extra ghouls tagging along
A WORD FROM PUBLICITY & PROMOTIONS
Linedance demonstrations are a great way to promote Linedancing as a whole
and I had the pleasure to demonstrate at two different country towns to two
different kind of participants. The first one was in Shepparton at a Womens Paper
Day (this was catered for young mothers in the Shepparton area) where we
demonstrated a couple of dances and had the opportunity to teach a couple of
dances. A big thank you to Congupna Linedancers.
The second demonstration was with Wodonga Calisthenic Academy where Robo
and I were thrilled to workshop these young ladies and their mothers. Their
enthusiasm was overwhelming and so rewarding. They all dressed country with
their cowboy hats and the Yee Ha’s and Ohh’s and grunts were the best. They
nearly knocked me flying through the wall when they grunted to the dance
“Working for the man”, they also learnt Cute Bootscooter, Pick a Bale and Moody Blue. Robo was asked to pick the best
dressed country mum, this nearly caused kayos and each little girl came running for Robo to introduce him to their mum
whom they thought was the best. A big thank you to Heather & Tomo (my students from Wodonga). We have been requested to come again for another workshop with the senior girls. Wonder whether I should ask Robo to help with that
demo????
Enjoy your demonstrations, they are
so rewarding.

FROM LINDA
Hi Everyone
Well that's another month passed and a pretty busy one for me. Sue and I took another group over to Norfolk Island for
the Country Music Festival and once again, had a ball. Couldn't have asked for a better group and even tho we did have
a bit of rain we still enjoyed our time immensely.
Another month coming up with big events happening as well as your own normal socials. The Southern State Line
Dancing Championships are coming up this weekend at Greensborough. I am looking forward to this weekend, taking
a group down so we can relax and enjoy the end result of a lot of hard work and training. Good luck to everyone, hope
you all do well.
The other event this month is the VLDA Ball which is such a great night to catch up with everyone. If you are still in
need of tickets you had better get onto Keith quickly as he needs to be able to finalise all the loose ends now.
Attach to the back of this newsletter is a renewal form. Don't forget our membership expires 30th June so if you haven't
already sent in your membership renewal then now would be a good time. Just so you are aware, Rob Charity, our
Membership Co-Ordinator has not been well now for quite a few months, so if you don't receive your receipt ASAP,
then don't worry, you will get it. Get better quick Rob.
Our Annual General Meeting is coming up on the 28th of July so you will be receiving all the appropriate Voting packs
soon. I have just completed 3 years as Newsletter Editor and a year as Membership Co-Ordinator. I won't be standing
again this coming year. Line Dancing will still play a huge part of my life but I am planning to get back into some
projects that I have outside of Line Dancing that I have put on the back burner for quite sometime. I think the biggest
thing I got out of doing the Newsletter was getting to know a lot of people out there that I wouldn't normally have had
the chance to, even if it is only via email. If anyone is interested, then please consider putting your hand up, I will help
with whatever I can to get you going.
Well that's it for this month….If I don't catch you this coming weekend then hopefully I will catch you at the ball.
Happy Dancing
Cheers Linda
