Your APUSH summer assignment will require analysis of the topics and themes
covered in Period 1: 1491-1607. This assignment will serve as an overview of the key events that will be discussed in
class during the first few weeks of school.



ALL WORK is due on Tuesday, September 8th at the beginning of your APUSH class period. NO WORK WILL BE
ACCEPTED LATE.
ALL WORK will be submitted as a hard copy. Emailed assignments will not be accepted.
We recommend completing the assignments in the order listed.
Resources needed to complete the assignment:
1. AMSCO review book --- United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement examination
2. AMSCO review book charts --- found on APUSH class website
3. Gilder Lehrman AP US History Study Guide period 1 website http://ap.gilderlehrman.org/period/1
Assignment #1 – AMSCO book
1. Read the introduction (pg. xi-xx). Take notes about the historical thinking skills and historical themes.
2. Read chapter 1. Complete and submit a hard copy of the chart for chapter 1. A link to the charts is posted
on our websites.
3. Answer all 5 “Thinking as a Historian” questions on pg. 20. Each answer should be a detailed paragraph at
least 10 sentences in length.
Assignment #2 – Gilder Lehrman AP US History study guide for period 1
Read all 9 documents and complete the HAPPY template for each.
Assignment #3 --- Gilder Lehrman AP US History study guide for period 1
Read all 4 essays (Imperial Rivalries, The Columbian Exchange, Americas to 1620, and Indian Slavery in the Americas).
Complete the HAPPY template for each essay. You are encouraged to type your responses directly onto the template.
There will be an exam on Wednesday, September 9th based on this reading (the introduction and chapter 1) as well as
the Gilder Lehrman documents and essays.
