An occupational therapy assistant is a skilled healthcare practitioner who works under the supervision of a licensed occupational therapist in the planning and treatment implementation of individuals affected by physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities. The Baker College Occupational Therapy Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). Ms. Potter is originally from the Detroit area and received her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Wayne State University. She also has a master's degree from the Institute of Gerontology which is within the Wayne State University System. Ms. Potter is licensed to practice as an occupational therapist in four states: Michigan, California, Tennessee, and Texas. Ms. Potter began her career working for a non-profit organization managing an Adult Day Care program. Then, after getting her master's degree, she worked as an occupational therapist in acute care within the Saint John Health System. In West Michigan, she transitioned into long-term care for a few years before moving into travel therapy. She and her husband traveled for several years while she worked as a contract occupational therapist. They eventually returned to Michigan permanently, and she worked in Muskegon as a home-care occupational therapist until coming to Baker College. According to Ms. Potter, her work here at Baker College is challenging and rewarding. She especially enjoys having the opportunity to train future colleagues in the classroom! She is currently working on building Baker College's local professional networking options by developing a Western Chapter to the Michigan Occupational Therapy Association. She is excited by the enthusiasm of our Baker students to engage in volunteer opportunities such as our annual Car-Fit event. She looks forward to encouraging her students in a variety of community service projects in the future! Students should consult the Baker College website to confirm their contact information is current. *Please note: Any student who is enrolled in a work experience, field placement, clinical site rotation, or similar course (off-site) will be expected to report to his / her off-site experience (unless conditions are such that it would not be safe for the student to travel to the off-site location).
