Music School Withdrawal FAQ
When is the withdrawal deadline?
October 23, 2014
How can I withdraw?
You can initiate withdrawal in Athena. Follow these steps:
1. Log-in to www.athena.uga.edu
2. Choose “Student”
3. Choose “Registration”
4. Choose “Add or Drop Classes”
5. From there, you will see a list of the courses in which you are registered.
6. Under the “Action” drop-down, your only choice should be “Course Withdrawal”
7. Submit Changes
8. This will then show an updated list of courses including the withdrawn course which should now read
“Course withdrawn on xxxxxxxx (date)”
9. Log out or return to main menu for other options.
NB: If you are dropping MATH 1113 or drop back to UNIV 1110, Athena will automatically drop you
from CHEM 1211+L, because MATH 1113 is the co-requisite for CHEM 12111/L. The same may be true
for other co-requisite courses; check with the departments before dropping any classes with co-requisites. If
you are not sure if a course has a co-requisite, check the bulletin -- www.bulletin.uga.edu
How many times can I withdraw?
You are allowed four WP’s for the remainder of your college career. Any withdrawal beyond those four
will automatically be a WF. Military and hardship withdrawals are exceptions.
What is the difference between a WP and a WF?
A WP is a withdrawal passing and will not factor into your GPA. A WF is a withdrawal failing and will
factor into your GPA like an F.
Should I talk to the professor before withdrawing from a class?
It is always prudent to speak with the professor before withdrawing from a class, both to ask if there is a
way to improve your performance in the class and to ask whether the professor will give you a WP or a
WF.

What happens when I withdraw from a course that has a corequisite?
If you are withdrawing from a course like MUSI 1100, which has MUSI 1110 as a corequisite, you will
automatically be dropped from BOTH classes. In order to prevent this “double drop,” you will need to a
“corequisite override” BEFORE you attempt to drop ANY course with a preprequisite. Please email me
at abutcher@uga.edu.
Will withdrawing from a music course put me behind?
Yes, that is a possibility. Several courses are only offered one time a year or every other year. For example, if you
drop from MUSI 1100 you will not be able to attempt the course again onto fall 2015. If you are concerned about
this possibility, please contact your academic advisor.
What other things do I need to consider before withdrawing from a class?
If withdrawing from a class will change your status to a part-time student, these could be affected:
•
Your housing status (University Housing/706-542-1421)
•
Your athletic status (Athletic Dept./706-542-1847)
•
Immigration status (International Education/706-542-7903)
•
Your financial aid (Student Financial Aid/706-542-6147)
•
Veteran’s benefits (Veterans Benefits/Registrar/706-542-8772)
•
Your health and automobile insurance coverage
What if I want to withdraw from all of my courses?
The first four courses you select for withdrawal on OASIS can be your first four WP’s—if the professors
give a WP grade. After those four classes, the remaining courses will be WF’s. The only exception is if
these are hardship withdrawals.
What is a hardship withdrawal?
A hardship withdrawal is a withdrawal approved by the Office of Student Support as a documented
event or serious illness that is beyond the student’s control and prevents the student from continuing or
performing successfully in the semester. It is expected that the student will withdraw from all courses for
the semester. If you believe you qualify for a hardship withdrawal and can provide documentation,
contact Student Support Services – 706-542-8220.
