THE KENTUCKIANAWORKS COLLEGE ACCESS CENTER
(KCAC) is a one-stop center focusing on college access. It provides financial aid, educational,
and career counseling services to adults and youth in the Louisville area and in southern Indiana. KCAC
is a division of KentuckianaWorks Foundation. The Foundation is administered by KentuckianaWorks,
a business-led workforce investment board that oversees workforce development initiatives in the
Greater Louisville region. KCAC is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Federal TRIO Programs, and
administered by KentuckianaWorks Foundation, Inc. KCAC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color,

T YPES OF POSTSECONDARY INSTITUTIONS
Postsecondary education beyond a high school diploma or a GED is available through
training programs, vocational/technical training schools, community colleges, four year
colleges, universities, and proprietary schools.
 
Two-year Colleges/Community Colleges: Public, Not for Profit, institutions
that lead to an associate’s degree, diplomas, or certificates. Most also have programs
designed to transfer to a four-year college or university. In Kentucky, the Community
and Technical Colleges are part of one system called KCTCS (Kentucky Community
and Technical College System).
 
Technical Colleges: Public or Private, Not for Profit or For Profit institutions that lead
to certificates, diplomas or sometimes an associate’s degree.
 
Four-year Colleges/Universities: Public or Private, Not for Profit or For Profit
institutions that lead to a bachelor’s degree and higher degrees of educational
attainment, such as a master’s degree and a Ph.D.
 
Proprietary Schools: Schools privately owned and licensed, usually For Profit,
leading to certificates, diplomas, associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees or higher
degrees of educational attainment, such as a master’s degree and a Ph.D.

Financial Aid refers to money used to cover the cost of attendance at a postsecondary institution. It consists of grants, scholarships,

uNeed-based aid is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. The Pell grant is an example.
uMerit-based aid is awarded to students who demonstrate academic achievement, special talent, or having met criteria
provided by a postsecondary institution, a private organization, a community foundation, or an association.
uCredit-based aid consists of student loans that must be repaid.
Federal Pell Grant is awarded to students who have not earned
Kentucky Tuition Grant (KTG) is awarded to full-time

Electronic Filing of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
KCAC will assist individuals with filing the FAFSA electronically with the
U.S. Department of Education. By transmitting financial aid data electronically
(versus completing and mailing a paper copy of the FAFSA to the U.S.
Department of Education),
uerrors are reduced,
udata will register with the U.S. Department of Education in 3 - 7 days, not weeks as with paper forms, and
uStudent Aid Reports (SARs) are generated for individuals
within 10 -14 days.
Call KCAC at (502) 584-0475 to make an appointment for assistance in filing the
FAFSA. Remember to bring the following documents to your appointment:
ucompleted 1040 federal tax return and W2 forms if you are required to file taxes
udocumentation of other income, such as a Social Security Income (SSI) statement, KTAP, child support, and Food Stamp Award Letter.
uUntil the age of 24, students also need their parents’ completed 1040 federal tax form, parents’ W2s and parents’ birth dates in order to complete the FAFSA.
uYour PIN (Personal Identification Number) is important!

Your PIN will allow you access to your personal information in various
U.S. Department of Education systems. You will keep the same PIN
the entire time you are in postsecondary education, so keep it in a
safe place and bring it with you each time you come to KCAC. Call KCAC

DEFAULTED STUDENT LOAN REHABILITATION COUNSELING
The U.S. Department of Education provides a number of ways to re-qualify
for financial aid. Rehabilitation of a student loan in default involves setting
up a reasonable payment schedule with the current holder of the loan. Set
up an appointment with one of KCAC’s counselors to assist you in completing
several steps involved in student loan rehabilitation.
