The date of the final examination is set by the Registrar and takes precedence over the final examination date reported in this outline. Students must verify this date on Bear Tracks when the Final Examination Schedule is posted. 9. DEFERRED EXAMINATIONS Missed Midterm Exam There will be no deferred midterm examination. If you have a valid reason for missing the exam (e.g., incapacitating illness, severe domestic affliction or other compelling reasons such as university sports team obligation), then you can apply for an excused absence. To apply for an excused absence, you must present to the instructor supporting documentation pertaining to the absence within two working days of missing the exam or as soon as possible. In the case of an incapacitating illness, a medical note will be accepted. In the case of religious conviction, the student must inform the instructor by the end of the second week of classes. An excused absence is a privilege and not a right. There is no guarantee that an absence will be excused. Misrepresentation of facts to gain an excused absence is a serious breach of the Code of Student Behaviour. If an excused absence has been granted, then the weight of the midterm exam will be transferred to the final exam. Missed Final Exam The deferred final examination (for those who qualify—consult the University Calendar) is scheduled as follows: Saturday, January 10, 2015 in CAB 357 at 09:00 (registration is at 08:30 in CAB 357). Please note that students are required to apply for deferred final exams at their Faculty Office within two working days of the missed exam. 3 10. REEXAMINATION A student who writes the final exam and fails the course may apply for a reexamination. Reexaminations are rarely granted in the Faculty of Science. These exams are governed by the University (Calendar section 23.5.5) and Faculty of Science Regulations (Calendar section 192.5.3). Misrepresentation of facts to gain a reexamination is a serious breach of the Code of Student Behaviour. 11. ASSIGNMENTS (ONLINE) Assignments will consist of a total of 11 online assignments. We will use the best nine marks out of 11 to calculate the final mark for the assignments. We use Enhanced WebAssign (www.webassign.net) for online assignments. Each student is required to register on EWA using the access code that comes with a new copy of the textbook (or a stand-alone access code). To register on EWA, please use the following class key particular to your section. After an answer is entered on WebAssign, you will get an instant response as to if your answer is correct. You are allowed a total of three tries per question (in most cases). NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Failure to submit an assignment on time for any reason will result in a mark of zero. 4 Online Homework Disclaimer Online homework is a component of this course and is provided by a third-party company. Please be aware that this company will be storing assessment information that may be associated with you. 12. LABORATORIES (scheduled for Math 113 students) Those students who registered in Math 113 were required to register for a lab with class time/date stated as TBA. We no longer have scheduled labs. Instead, we have workshops for both Math 113 and 114 students. 13. WORKSHOPS AND WORKSHEETS Workshops are held in the Decima Robinson Support Centre (CAB 528) from Monday through Friday between 10:00 and 15:00, starting the second week of classes (the week of Sept. 8). Note that workshop attendance is not mandatory, but students who require assistance when working on the worksheets can obtain help from the Teaching Assistants during the workshops. Students can attend the workshops any time from 10:00 to 15:00 (Monday–Friday). During a workshop, students will be encouraged to work actively through questions on the worksheets, which should be printed out in advance from the eClass site. Teaching Assistants dedicated to Math 113/114 will be available to provide help on the questions on the worksheets and other questions in the course. During the term, there will be nine worksheets, which are available through the eClass site each week. Completed worksheets are due in the appropriate assignment box on the third floor of CAB by the due date/time noted on each worksheet (the schedule of worksheet due dates is also attached to this outline). Late worksheets will not be graded and a mark of zero will be assigned. The best eight out of nine worksheets will be counted for the average. Please check the eClass site on a regular basis for worksheets, due dates/times, solutions and other relevant information. Marked worksheets can be picked up from the workshops. They will be kept in CAB 528 for two weeks from the day they are returned, after which any unclaimed worksheets will be recycled. 14. HELP SESSIONS (Decima Robinson Support Centre) Help sessions will be available on a first-come first-serve basis in CAB 528, Monday–Friday from 09:00–15:00. The starting date will be announced later. There are also other resources available. Please go to the eClass site for further details. 15. COURSE OUTLINES The policy on course outlines can be found in Section 23.4(2) of the University Calendar. 16. DISCLAIMER Any typographical errors in this course outline are subject to change and will be announced in class. The date of the final examination is set by the Registrar and takes precedence over the final examination date reported in this outline. 5 Student Responsibilities 1. CODE OF STUDENT BEHAVIOUR The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the University in this respect. Students are particularly urged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Code of Student Behaviour (www.ualberta.ca/secretariat/appeals.htm) and avoid any behavior which could potantially result in suspicions of cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation of facts and/or participation in an offence. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and can result in suspension or expulsion from the University. All forms of dishonesty are unacceptable at the University. Any offense will be reported to the Senior Associate Dean of Science who will determine the disciplinary action to be taken. Cheating, plagiarism and misrepresentation of facts are serious offenses. Anyone who engages in these practices will receive a minimum of a grade of zero for the exam or paper in question and no opportunity will be given to replace the grade or redistribute the weights. As well, in the Faculty of Science, the sanction for cheating on any examination will include a disciplinary failing grade (no exceptions) and senior students should expect a period of suspension or expulsion from the University of Alberta. 2. EXAMS Your student photo ID is required at exams to verify your identity. Students will not be allowed to begin an examination after it has been in progress for 30 minutes. Students must remain in the exam room until at least 30 minutes have elapsed. Electronic equipment cannot be brought into examinations. 3. CELL PHONES Cell phones are to be turned off during lectures. Cell phones are not to be brought to exams. 4.
