INTRODUCTION The Medical Terminology course explains the basics of medical terms related to function, disorders, diagnosis and treatment of the human body. The course forms a solid foundation on for a health professional. Students entering the course are expected to develop a mature approach to education and also to assume responsibility for their own learning. Studying means not only attending scheduled classes but most of all it means seeking for information and reading from textbooks prior to attending lectures and lab sessions. Students who want successfully finish their medical education should be prepared to work hard and learn how to efficiently manage their time. Students are obligated to know Rules and Regulation of the Human Anatomy Department before started the course. During first class each student is obligated to sign the Rules and Regulations paper confirming. II. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION Medical Terminology Course is conducted for one semester and covers topics concerning basic anatomy, physiology and pathology of the human body along with their clinical correlations. The Course consists of 15 lab sessions (2 hours each = 30 didactic hours). During every lab session students are required to take short quiz consisting of five multiple choice test questions. At the end of the course students will take the Final Exam. III. COURSE COMPONENTS. LAB SESSIONS Topics according to the schedule and syllabus will be discussed during lab sessions. Each lab session consists of the presentation prepared by the lecturer, discussion on the present topic and the question panel. In order to be able to actively participate in the discussion and a question panel students are obliged to come to classes prepared (prior reading is necessary). Quizzes will be held at the end of every lab session IV. ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR POLICY 1. Students must attend all lab sessions. 2. Students should come to lab sessions prepared and on-time. Students MUST participate in labs and lectures in an active way. Students late more than 10 minutes for the class are not allowed to enter class room (being late of more than ten minutes equals unjustified absenteeism). 3. In case of an absence during a lab session the student is obligated to certify his/her absence by the medical excuse certified by the Dean’s Office. To be accepted the medical excuse must confirm illness longer than 3 days. 4. The medical excuse must be provided by certified general practitioner: public clinic Langiewicza St. no. 6 (registration number 81 524 78 20). Only such excuse will be accepted. 4. If the student is absent due to hospital admission his/her absenteeism has to be reported to the course coordinator within 3 working days and proved with the hospital excuse note 6. All excuse notes must be submitted in Grzegorz Witkowski’s office within the week following the absence, in electronic way to the email: student@imul.pl subject Medical Terminology. 7. Failure to obey attendance policy may result in the student not being allowed to take the final exam. Only one unjustified absenteeism or two justified absenteeisms are allowed. 8. Students must participate in lab sessions according to the schedule; any changes have to be discussed with the course coordinator. 9. Students are obliged to be prepared for the classes and actively participate in the discussion. 10. During all tests answers to test questions must be written with pens (not pencils). Correct answers must be marked with ‘X’ on the answer sheet and the letter indicating the correct answer must be placed in the grey box of the answer sheet. No corrections are allowed in the grey box. Answer sheets filled out in any other different way will not be taken under consideration and will not be checked. Cheating on quizzes will result in gaining no points for these tests and referral to faculty and administration officials. Cheating on final exam will result in failing the course and referral to administration. 11. Students must wear lab coats and lab shoes during every lab session and every time they enter Human Anatomy Department. Students who are not fulfilling these requirements are not allowed to participate in the lab sessions. 12. Coats and regular shoes must be left in the cloakroom. 13. The use of mobile phones or any kind of electronic equipment is forbidden during lab sessions, lectures and tests. 14. Any form of photography or sound recording (including conventional or digital cameras, video recording or mobile phone cameras) within the Human Anatomy Department is expressly forbidden 15. Polish law regulations in terms of Copyrights are applicable. 16. Eating and drinking is NOT permitted in the Human Anatomy Department. 17. Smoking in the area of the Human Anatomy Department is strictly prohibited. 18. Professional Behavior. Students joining medical school are expected to abide by the norms of professional behavior, which is characterized by following attributes: a. honesty, punctuality and appropriate clothing b. acknowledging sources of information, avoiding pirating and plagiarism c. respecting other people’s individuality, rights and property d. responsibility for own deeds and academic commitments e. ability to communicate clearly and provide full information when asked to do so during lab sessions and tests. 19. All the communication with the department of Human Anatomy must be addressed to student@imul.pl subject: Medical Terminology. 20. Every lab session students are obliged to take short quizzes: a. quizzes consist of 5 multiple-choice questions (students obtain 1 point for one correctly answered question). b. during semester students have an opportunity to obtain maximum 70 points. 21. Presence at the quizzes is obligatory. Students who are not present at partial tests have no opportunity to take them at the other term - the only exceptions regard absence justified by medical excuse note. In these cases students have opportunity to take the quiz during the following classes (first classes they are present). If the quiz is not taken then, the student is given zero points for the missed quiz. The student is obligated to remind the teaching assistant about the missing quiz he/she would like to take. V. REQUIREMENTS FOR PASSING THE COURSE 1. In order to complete the course students have to: obey attendance and behavior policy; obtain at least 50 % of total amount of points from quizzes and pass final examination. 2. Final examination’s grading scale: Less than 60 % 2,0 (fail) 60 – 70 % 3,0 (pass) 71 – 79 % 3,5 (satisfactory) 80 – 84 % 4,0 (good) 85 – 89 % 4,5 90% - 100 % 5,0 (very good) 3. There is a "Guide" provided. It presents the structure of quizzes and final exam and what are the minimal requirements to pass the course as well as what is needed to obtain better grade after the course. 4. At the end of the course, before the final exam, students are obligated to prepare scenes in which they should prove their ability to use the medical terminology in everyday practice. Examples of such scenes are presented in the "Guide". It also proposes clues how to prepare other scenes, but students are encouraged to prepare their own scenes with the words and terms their learnt during the Course. VI. FINAL EXAM 1. Final exam takes place in the Collegium Anatomicum in June 13 th 2016 at 03:00pm. The date of final exam is not to be changed. Students who do not attend final exam obtain ‘Fail’ score and have to take the exam during retake session. The only exception regards absence justified by medical excuse note. In such cases a date will be individually assigned for the student by the Head of the Course. 2. To be allowed to take the Final Exam in Medical Terminology student must have not less than 50% of total amounts of course points and obtain a positive evaluation from the Human Anatomy Department Faculty Council Meeting. List of students who pass the course and can take the final exam will be posted after final evaluation of the student’s achievements which will take place during Human Anatomy Department Faculty Council Meeting. 3. To enter final exam session students must identify themselves with the students’ IDs (or any ID with full name and photo). 4. Final exam consist of 50 multiple choice questions, during which students can obtain maximum of 50 points (students obtain one point for one correctly answered question). According to the "Guide" there are 30 questions considering "Basic Knowledge", 10 questions considering "Advanced Knowledge", 10 questions considering "Expert Knowledge". 5. Students have 50 minutes to answer examination questions. 6. To pass final exam students have to answer at least 60% of questions correctly and thus obtain at least 30 points. 7. In case of not passing final examination student has a possibility to retake the exam in February: 1st retake(test): September 2nd,2016 at 09.00am 2nd retake(test) September 09th, 2016 at 09.00am Dates of the final exam retakes are not to be changed, and there will be no exceptions made. Students who do not attend final exam retakes on given dates obtain ‘Fail’ score. The only exception regards absence justified by medical excuse note. In such cases a date will be individually assigned for the student by the Head of the Course. Final evaluation of the Anatomy course and exams for all students will be announced after the Human Anatomy Department Faculty Council Meeting. All the suggestions, comments and requests MUST be addressed to the course coordinator at student@imul.pl with ‘Medical Terminology’ in the title. No other form of communication has legal value. 8. In order to view your final exam results online STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE A COURSE EVALUTION. If the student does not fill out the course evaluation that student’s results will not be posted on imul.pl website.
