2015 Character Awards Nominees Citizen of Character – Elementary JRPS Breakfast Snack Program Volunteers – James Robinson Public School – Markham JRPS Breakfast Snack Program provides food for 300 students, 5 days a week. Each morning, student volunteers dedicate one hour to prepare and serve food. Volunteers have learned the importance of nutrition, safe food handling procedures, food pairing, food presentation and portion control. Volunteers have also learned the value of working as a team to accomplish daily tasks within a limited amount of time. Savannah Dent - Stouffville Savannah is a mature, confident and responsible student who serves as a role model in the classroom and whole school community. She is compassionate and empathetic to all of her peers with her innate nurturing disposition. She has a unique capacity to ensure everyone is included and seeks out marginalized students to support them. TeamUp4Change - Claire DiLosa, Elise Vestergaard, Larissa Keyes, Sophia Gatzos – Mount Albert Claire, Elise, Larissa and Sophia wanted to make a difference for students dealing with eating disorders, bullying and depression. So they started TeamUp4Change and created, wore and sold t-shirts to benefit Hats on for Awareness. By "smashing the stigma out of Mental Health", they became the youngest "Friends of Hats on for Awareness" group and raised over $1600.00 to date. Citizen of Character – Secondary Abdullah Malik – Vaughan During the past year, Abdullah has spent much of his free time organizing, motivating and leading a new organization at St. Jean de Brebeuf CHS solely dedicated to raising money and awareness for the Sick Kids Foundation. He has accomplished all this while maintaining honour roll status and receiving the highest average award in grade 11. Aidan Aird – Markham Aidan is a grade 10 AP student at St. Brother Andre and is a social entrepreneur who founded Developing Innovations, a not for profit organization that’s mission is to inspire, celebrate and promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to students of all ages. Aiden is also an active fundraiser and volunteers as a special needs coach in the High-5 Program. April 29, 2015 Page 1 2015 Character Awards Nominees Ben Dobson – Newmarket Ben is an outstanding young man. In the fall, Ben was in a cycling accident and suffered a concussion. While still feeling its effects, Ben was involved in a horrific car crash while being driven home from school in a taxi. Ben worked very hard this past year to get back in a taxi to travel to school and focus on his schoolwork. His work ethic and perseverance will allow him to graduate in June. Carmen West – Aurora Carmen selflessly gives her ‘all’ to the school and the greater community, and never asks for anything in return. Her passion to save lives has resulted in an initiative to get every high school in York Region to have their own bone marrow drive. Carmen’s perseverance and unwavering desire to see this initiative through will have an impact for years to come. Danielle Belliss – Keswick Danielle’s caring for children is inspiring. She has volunteered at Jericho Youth Services, been a Peer Mentor, done co-op placements and is now heading to University to become an elementary School Teacher. It is evident Danielle knows how to “walk in someone else’s shoes”. So many of her activities have been dedicated to helping others learn or grow their skills. Danny Romm – Thornhill Danny personifies all-round excellence as he endeavors to maximize his potential, and that of the school and community. According to one of his teachers, “Danny is extremely empathetic and caring towards others. He also combines a depth and breadth of knowledge with insight to come to creative ideas and solutions”. Deanna Tassielli - Woodbridge Deanna has been volunteering in the Grade 5 classes for several years. She is an excellent role model for students and has shown initiative and leadership by teaching students "wire art". Deanna always maintains a positive attitude and empowers students to do the same. She takes great pride in making everyone feel included and valued for their unique contributions – she is a true person of character. Eesha Patel – Maple At the age of 14, Eesha demonstrated interest in tackling world issues through her humanitarian work. She has represented York Region and Canada in an international conference held every year. Despite having limited resources and guidance, Eesha was able to organize a supervisor and other students and create one of the first People to People International student chapters within Maple High School. April 29, 2015 Page 2 2015 Character Awards Nominees Isabella Suppa – Woodbridge Isabella demonstrated initiative and perseverance by leading a project to paint two murals for the residents and visitors in a long-term cognitive care home. Over several months Isabella planned every detail including input from residents and staff, drawing original sample pictures, and keeping herself and 6 other students on task for a total of 616 hours to complete the artwork. Janet Tan – Markham Janet contributes positively to the spirit of her school while making great effort to include others. The school collectively raised over $3500 for the Children’s Miracle Network. For this, Janet created a Facebook group, gave up multiple lunch periods, and took the initiative to collect her own donations outside of school. The end result was our school raised the most amount of money at the Ontario Student Leadership Conference! Jennifer Korman – Richmond Hill Jennifer maintains a ten subject course load, and holds four part-time jobs. Jennifer and her brother created Bottles For Bread, a program that takes empty liquor & beer bottles and cans, and turns them into dollars that buys food to feed the residents of Richmond Hill. Jennifer and her friends tirelessly sift through the Blue Boxes on residents’ driveways. Jennifer has further spent her own money purchasing items to make Bottles For Bread a success. Kalea Kirsh - Newmarket At 6 years of age, Kalea was the youngest to receive a junior achievement award for showing compassion and leadership. She was chosen out of hundreds of submissions she was the youngest for her care and consideration of fellow students with special needs. According to her teacher, "Kalea impresses with her empathy, dedication, creativity, and integrity." Khadecia Bennett – Maple Khadecia has a passion for learning! As a grade 12 student at Stephen Lewis Secondary School, she has been instrumental in bringing Black History Month to life at Stephen Lewis Secondary School. Khadecia has gained the respect of all who know and learn with her, and she challenges others to never settle for mediocrity but to strive for excellence in all that they do. April 29, 2015 Page 3 2015 Character Awards Nominees Loreta Chan – Markham Loreta volunteers much of her time for non-profit organizations. Her undying love for volunteering and raising awareness for local and global issues allows others to gain confidence and follow her lead. Most amazing of all is that she consistently strives to improve herself and others at the same time. Nelson Mahmoudi – Kewsick Nelson lives with character in every aspect of his life. He has volunteered at the Georgina Public Libraries for three years, and is respected in the community for his work as a lunch monitor and at day camps. Nelson demonstrates initiative and responsibility, and because of his awareness and quick action, he has also been credited with saving his neighbour’s life during this past winter. Olivia Johnson – Holland Landing Olivia is a wonderful example for our youth today, showing such a commitment to making a difference in our community. She has volunteered with various organizations in York Region, including Girls Inc. Anti-Bullying Campaign, the Eco-Club, Fair Trade Fashion Show, East Gwillimbury Public Library and Doane House Hospice. Students for Global Issues – David Kim and Trevor Wright – Aurora David Kim and Trevor Wright started Aurora High School's "Students for Global Issues" club three years ago. They have headed many initiatives - from making lunches and buying socks and gloves for the homeless, to creating holiday cards to support CAMH and 360 Kids. These students think first of others and want to make a true difference in others' lives. Veronica Chan – Thornhill Veronica contributes to the community by volunteering to people of different ages, including kid’s summer camps, free math tutoring, and fundraising for Free the Children to build a school in Ghana. She also volunteers at her pediatrician’s office, seniors homes, Unionville Youth Council, Markham Idol and more. Yvonne Li – Markham Yvonne makes her school a better place and gives back in many ways. As a member of the Student Activity Council, she volunteers to help make events successful without any hesitation. Yvonne works hard for the greater good of the Student Council, and the school as a whole. In doing this, she exemplifies student leadership to her fellow peers and demonstrates being a role model to others around her. April 29, 2015 Page 4 2015 Character Awards Nominees Citizen of Character - Young Adult Crystal Pangman – Sutton Crystal Pangman is an exceptional young woman. Despite her own physical and learning challenges, she selflessly takes the initiative to compassionately help others and animals because she is happy, she's able to! She is a role model to many - from Georgina Challenge Creator, Senior Secret Santa, Bowl for Kids Sake, Terry Fox Run, Jr. Ambassador Coordinator and more. Erin Kennelly – Mount Albert For such a young adult, Erin's dedication and commitment to her community is admirable. Erin spends time giving back through volunteering at local churches and was a member of the Peace Club, whose main purpose is organizing dinners and fundraising events for those in need. Ivan Issaev – Thornhill Ivan is a kind and compassionate person who helped strangers who were struck by a vehicle. He assisted the patient prior to York Region Paramedic Services’ arrival. He translated, accompanied the patient enroute to hospital, and held their hand reassuringly. Ivan is an inspiring example of a “Good Samaritan.” Jan Paol Mendez - Maple Jan Paol is a praiseworthy young adult. Since 2014, he has been a tutor at New Arising Academy where he assists with the cognitive development of children. He provides basic school knowledge and guides them in their talent, identity, and skill development. He rallies them to be good citizens and fosters a safe environment where everyone feels included. Kareen Awadalla – Newmarket Kareen exudes a number of important characteristics. She was working in the Philippines for an international development organization when a Typhoon hit and she was thrust into the role of helping rebuild - forging collaborations between government, private sector and relief organizations. Here at home, she is on the organizing committee for Help Portrait Day Newmarket and was the driving force behind the Newmarket Double Give-Back Campaign that raised $10,000 for local charities. April 29, 2015 Page 5 2015 Character Awards Nominees Leo Chan – Vaughan Leo is a big brother, handyman and mentor of many youths at Across U-hub, a charitable organization serving immigrant youth of East Asian descent. He has a passion to help youth realize their potentials and build up their communication skills, teamwork, and ultimately their confidence. In the past eight years, he has taken up team leader responsibilities to serve over 1000 youths. Ruheena Sangrar – Newmarket Ruheena takes pride in her work and always treats Doane House Hospice clients and her peers with fairness, respect and inclusiveness. She organized and facilitated an ethics café as a volunteer workshop, and takes the initiative to bring new ideas to the table. Ruheena has since joined the Board of Directors and brings a young, fresh approach to the way we do business. Samantha Torrens – Holland Landing Samantha understands the intrinsic values of volunteering, and believes that "being involved in the community is not only beneficial to society, but beneficial to personal growth as well”. She has volunteered with the Relay for Life and cancer research awareness campaign for three years. Samantha also coaches a youth basketball team, mentoring the players and ensuring the character attributes were brought into every practice and game. Sonny Pawlowicz – Newmarket Sonny has participated in YouthSpeak sharing his personal experience overcoming adversity for the past several years. As a result, he has inspired thousands of students, teachers and parents with his story of resilience living with Lupus and mental health challenges, even during times when his illness was very prevalent. Vincci Wing Sze Tang – Markham Vincci is an optimistic person. She always brings joy and energy to people around her. She serves as a volunteer at Across U-hub, a charitable organization serving immigrant youth of East Asian descent, for 10 years. Vincci is the "go to" person when a diplomatic situation occurs because she patiently listens and gives honest advice on her view. April 29, 2015 Page 6 2015 Character Awards Nominees Constable Yuri Poliakov Badge # 2057 - Aurora Constable Poliakov works to strengthen the relationship between York Regional Police and the community. An autistic boy in Vaughan formed a bond with Constable Yuri Poliakov after receiving two visits from the officer over the holidays. When Constable Poliakov first met the boy following a false alarm call, the boy was afraid of the uniform. By the end of the visit, the boy, who only communicates through sounds and expressions, was sporting a forage cap and even offered Constable Poliakov a hug. Citizen of Character - Adult Aimee Coulter – Sutton Aimee is very active in our school. She helps the students learn how to self-regulate, so they have time every day where they feel they have succeeded at a task. She builds the students' confidence and helps them to overcome obstacles. She also guides staff and parents to work with their children from a growth mind-set. She is patient and skilled in her leadership role and is adored by the school community. Ashley Wade – Stouffville Ashley lives her life by the golden rule of doing unto others as you’d have done unto you. She recently became involved with Victim Services of York Region by supporting their holiday program. Ashley sponsored nine families this holiday season not only with essentials such as snow suits, hats, mitts and boots but also with wish items ensuring the magic of the season would not be lost. Betty Jalali – Richmond Hill In every school community, there is an unsung hero. Someone who works behind the scenes doing jobs that most don’t even realize needed doing, displaying responsibility and initiative, celebrating everyone’s successes, and compassionately supporting all those around them. At Doncrest Public School, that person is Betty Jalali. Carolyn Watt – Mount Albert Carolyn has demonstrated many character attributes while being a volunteer of the East Gwillimbury Farmers Market over the past four years. She is committed to ensuring the success of the market as well as the promotion to support farmers. She so strongly believes in buying local and fresh and has no personal gain but to only educate others into a healthier lifestyle. April 29, 2015 Page 7 2015 Character Awards Nominees Christina Pontes – Thornhill Christina has been the secretary at St. Joseph the Worker CES in Thornhill for 15 years. Christina is an example of what it means to be a person with dedication and to truly care for others. She is responsible, caring, respectful, has strong work ethics and a very positive attitude. Christina demonstrates leadership and initiative and motivates the entire school community. Darren Peters – Keswick Darren is more than a custodian at Prince of Peace – he goes above and beyond in his job and in the community. Within the school he leads a ton of events that are outside his job description including: Jump Rope and the Grade 6 overnight Eco Club trip. In the community, Darren continues to shine as a volunteer fire fighter and a positive role model. Constable Dave Collie Badge # 2076 – Aurora Dave Collie is the School Resource Officer assigned to Sir William Mulock. In a very short period of time he has made a positive impact on students, particularly students in the Autism programs. He turns potentially negative situations into ones that have positive outcomes. He returns to visit and connect with the student at later dates to build long-term positive relationships which supports students in achieving their potential. David Forster – Newmarket Dave joined the volunteer Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers of York Region in 2001. Since then he has held positions as the Chair and Secretary along with becoming the VP for Ontario Crime Stoppers in 2009 and President in 2012. Through Dave's many years of dedication, locally and internationally, we have seen the immense positive growth of the program that helps the police solve crimes that otherwise would have gone unsolved. Fiona Stevenson – Newmarket Fiona is the kind of person who understands that people living with life-threatening illnesses need a certain kind of care. She has a social work background and worked in a hospice before, where for some of the residents, that was the place they spent their final days. Fiona facilitates the Bereavement Training Courses at Doane House Hospice and also does one-on-one sessions with clients. April 29, 2015 Page 8 2015 Character Awards Nominees Gayle Palmer – Aurora Gayle has one of the most beautiful hearts. She has been volunteering at Regency Acres for over 14 years, even though her children have grown up, she is still a very active member of school council. Gayle is also a very active member in the community through church, Dr. G.W Williams High School and as one of the organisers for the annual Walk of Hope to support research into Ovarian Cancer. Auxiliary Constable James Murray Badge #9370 – Aurora James Murray has been a member of the York Regional Police Auxiliary for nearly four years. The YRP rely on the Auxiliary unit for the success of their many community events such as festivals, Santa Claus Parades, charity runs, walks, and charity events of all kinds. James has been an outstanding member, having volunteered hundreds of hours, serving his community in the capacity of traffic control, security and always as an ambassador for YRP. Constables Jeff Tynan Badge #1908, Karian Guimond Badge # 1737, Sebastian Bijo Badge # 1540 - Aurora Jeff, Karian and Sebastian made a difference for a Markham family during their shift on January 3. During a Check Welfare call in #5 District, the officers found themselves grocery shopping after they discovered a single mother and two children struggling to get by. Each of the officers was inspired to donate their own funds to purchase lunches for the children. Jennifer Rea – Newmarket Jenn immigrated to Canada with her husband and two young daughters from Wolverhampton, England and has spent the last 25 years living in the Newmarket/Beeton area. Jenn continues to work for the Board at Sir William Mulock S.S. In her personal life, she is the rock of her family. Jenn’s optimism and perseverance during difficult times knows no bounds. Jennifer Russell – Sharon Jennifer wants East Gwillimbury to be a fun place for families to be! As an enthusiastic and energetic volunteer with both the Santa Claus Parade committee and New Year's Eve in EG, Jennifer has demonstrated courage and initiative. Jennifer has demonstrated in her volunteer work with the St. John Ambulance dog therapy program and as an avid helper at her daughter's school that her energy and optimism are contagious! April 29, 2015 Page 9 2015 Character Awards Nominees Judy Brunton – Aurora Judy has a positive and tireless commitment to fundraising, promoting awareness and reducing stigma for several social service organizations in York Region. Judy's extraordinary strengths/traits include Compassion, Fairness, Inclusiveness, Initiative and Respect. Judy ensures that her 7 year old son participates in the community as well. Laura Meffen – Markham As a special needs mother, Laura advocates as the Equity and Inclusivity Chair, on the James Robinson PS Council. As a member of the JRPS EcoSchoolyard Committee, her efforts helped raise over $85,000. Laura is a member of the Markham Special Needs Recreation Advisory, and the Sports and Recreation Accessibility Committees. In 2013, Laura launched “The Emily Kerr Award for School Volunteerism” to recognize a JRPS student who gives their time and effort volunteering in the school. Laurie Carriere – Sutton “Giving” is the best way to describe Laurie Carriere. She fosters animals, is an ambassador for the Georgina Bowl for Kids Sake and runs the Georgina Terry Fox Run. Her family also holds an annual Haunted House for the Food Pantry and the “Show You Care, Donate Your Hair at the Sutton Fair” event to collect ponytails to make wigs. Loretta Whiteman – East Gwillimbury Loretta Whiteman is the kind of citizen every community wants and needs! East Gwillimbury is so fortunate to have this person because she "wants her community to be the best place in which to live". Her contributions and commitments are almost too lengthy to list: Chair of the Santa Claus Parade; Chair of the EG Public Library; active volunteer and past board member of the Sharon Temple. Mary Zizakovic – Gormley Mary has been a dedicated parent volunteer at Whitchurch Highlands. In our school community, Mary is the person who can be counted upon to assume tasks, take initiative, and organize events. She supports the students through classroom and yard supervision, and staff through office assistance. Mary also heads the Healthy Schools committee and attends workshops with staff, learning about and promoting healthy school initiatives. April 29, 2015 Page 10 2015 Character Awards Nominees Nennette Paonessa – Thornhill There are 3 things you can count on in life--taxes, death & Nennette. She is an integral part of the ESL Continuing Education team. She consistently demonstrates character in all her interactions. Nennette operates with integrity and is fair and respectful. Paul Crowe – Stouffville Paul is the past President of the Stouffville Lions and is now the Zone Officer for Lions Club and Lay Minister for Christ Church. Paul assists with the opening and closing of Camp Kirk each year and was the 2007 Citizen of the Year for the Stouffville Chamber of Commerce. Robin Taylor-Smith – Aurora Robin is a take charge person. Robin is the co-chair of this year’s Run or Walk for Southlake. At the same time, Robin is the volunteer chair of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Home Show, an organizer for the Optimists of Aurora Beer Tasting event and chair of the "Tiki Party" for Special Olympians in Aurora and Newmarket. Susan Fogal – Sharon Susan has a tremendous amount of courage. She suffered a great personal tragedy when her daughter Ashley was killed by a driver impaired by drugs and alcohol. Through this ordeal, she has advocated for changes to roadside tests to check for drug use as well as alcohol. I believe her perseverance has initiated change for the better in our community. Tonya Slade – Keswick Tonya goes above and beyond her required roles and she is respected by everyone in the school community. Tonya begins and ends her day as a school bus driver for many of our students. During the mid-day, she works in our office as a lunch assistant. Tonya is also a school council member and she has taken on the role of parent worker for the Family and Schools Together Program. Unionville Meadows Public School - Lena Sipidias and Vanee Shiva - Markham Office administrators, Lena and Vanee, are amazing people both inside and out. They are also team players who go above and beyond what is asked of them. Lena and Vanee work tirelessly to ensure that the office is a welcoming and safe space for all who enter. They work hard each day to make Unionville Meadows a true community of learning. April 29, 2015 Page 11 2015 Character Awards Nominees Wilclay Community Support Group - Markham A group of fourteen women, deserve to be recognized and celebrated for their commitment, generosity and compassion. They greet new families, from all over the world to Wilclay Public School and are committed volunteers for the school’s Nutrition and Lunch programs for many years. Some of these women do not even have children in the school! Their dedication is appreciated by the entire Wilclay community. Citizen of Character – Senior Carol Ann Trabert – Kettleby Carol Ann has the organizing skills of a CEO, the personality of a rock star and the kindness of a tender-hearted soul. She has helped establish the King Township Food Bank as a recognized charity, at a new location with an effective distribution operation. Carol Ann never seeks for "glory" in her work but always gives the recognition to others. She has also served as coordinator of Kettleby Fair to allow community groups to raise money for their projects. Joan Brooker – Aurora Joan has been a volunteer within the hospice in administrative capacity, as in in-home volunteer, visiting clients in their home, and always willing to help out with events. She takes initiative, especially when she is out shopping for the Day Program. Joan always treats everyone with respect. She is a very sincere, trustworthy and truthful lady. Jo-anne Spitzer - Aurora Jo-anne gives total support to those with special needs and helps them in any way she can to make them feel cherished, important and encourages them to accomplish tasks, perform songs, speak out for themselves. A member of York Region Arts Council, her 45 years supporting the arts has been extensive for community theatre throughout Central Ontario. Ken Hackenbrook – Georgina Many know Ken as a Georgina Councillor serving six terms until his retirement. But his dedication to charities preceded his career as Councillor and follows his retirement. Ken works with many groups, including the Alzheimer's Society, the Bobby Orr Easter Seal Skate, and the Georgina Terry Fox Run. For 15 years, Ken has organized the Ice Owl Charity hockey games for visually impaired players. And he is the Director and Head Coach of the Sutton Hockey School, which was a dream that he founded over 40 years ago! April 29, 2015 Page 12 2015 Character Awards Nominees Sixteen Avenue Public School Breakfast Club Team - Richmond Hill The Breakfast Club volunteers at Sixteenth Avenue PS are a unique and talented team. They come to the school to prepare and serve breakfast to 50-80 students each morning. The volunteers shop for food, plan menus, and prepare nutritious breakfasts for students who might otherwise not eat in the morning. While the menu has changed over the years, the dedication and commitment of the volunteers remains strong. School of Character - York Region District School Board Dr. G.W. Williams SS – Aurora Increasing student involvement by choosing school priorities and resources for initiatives that will help all students feel safe and included has been an ongoing challenge for Dr. G.W. Williams. Students with various exceptionalities can be reluctant to participate in events or deliver announcements. Knowing these challenges, the school wanted to promote the importance of healthy living, safety and well-being in a caring, inclusive learning environment in a variety of ways that included a “Simply Say Hello” campaign that won them a Premiere’s Award for Accepting Schools. Maple Creek Public Street – Maple Maple Creek is a school whose staff and students strive daily through their actions, words and commitments to be a compassionate force in the world. No deed is too small, no action goes unnoticed and no words are unheard. Students take part in numerous initiatives such as collecting food stuffs, leading anti-bullying activities, raising awareness for global issues, collecting clothing for shelters, and mentoring new students to the community. Westminster Public School Staff – Thornhill The Westminister PS team tirelessly works to uphold all of the Character Traits and then some! The staff consistently supports the academic, social and emotional well-being of all of our students, parents, volunteers and each other. April 29, 2015 Page 13 2015 Character Awards Nominees School of Character - York Catholic School District Board St. Francis Xavier Catholic School - Markham St. Francis Xavier is a compassionate school that supports the local community. For years, the school has supported families in need through Christmas baskets and food drives. Students show not only compassion but initiative and optimism when they work to fundraise and support local charities. Eco initiatives are ongoing at the school and a butterfly garden was added last spring. Several staff members have also been trained and offer the "Rainbows" program, to support students who have experienced a loss in their family through death or separation. Educator of Character Adriana Marcantonio – Richmond Hill Ms. Marcantonio has gone above and beyond the call of duty to create an inclusive and holistic school environment. She passionately supports students through her initiatives and the clubs and organizations that she advises. Her dedication to Richmond Hill High School and her students deserves the highest recognition. Anne Marie Vanderzon, Denise Babulal, Elizabeth Alcinii, Gina Rocha – Richmond Hill The support staff is a collaborative and cohesive team who creates and provides students a supportive and safe learning environment. They continue to advocate for their students and ensure that every opportunity is provided to ensure their academic success and well being. This is an extremely caring group of educators who go above and beyond to support students. Ayesha Syed - Unionville Ms. Syed is an exemplary teacher. Her enthusiasm, work ethic and commitment to students is outstanding. Ms. Syed’s impact in the community is at all levels: in the classroom - the development of the Grade 12 University Equity & Social Justice, in the school - leading staff in PD related to digital literacy, in the Board shares best practices with colleagues at Regional SST Meetings, and in the community – charity work. Bernadette Ko – Aurora Ms. Bernadette Ko exhibits all of the characteristics one would want in a teacher, neighbour, co-worker and friend. Regardless of the student's artistic abilities, Mr. Melville encourages all of his students to reach for the top and do their best. Jacqueline Pontes – Unionville Ms. Pontes is dedicated in her service to students, parents/guardians and staff at Milliken Mills High School. As our Guidance Department Head, Jacqueline plays a key role in Grade 8 Open House, Course Selection Assemblies, IPP seminars, Post-Secondary Fair, graduation among many others. Her willingness to share her knowledge by mentoring Department members builds capacity in the school. Jill Javelosa-Alvarez – Newmarket As the Early Literacy Specialist for York Region, Jill has contributed enormously to the enhancement of skills and programming for Early Years professionals in schools, child care centres, libraries, Ontario Early Years Centres and so much more. She has also proven herself to be a wonderful support for families, providing workshops, resources and referrals, with a particular emphasis on literacy, as well as speech and language development. Judy Beaudin – Unionville Judy is an exceptional and experienced educator who not only focuses on transmitting the curriculum to students; she truly cares about who they are capable of becoming. She strives to meet the needs of all learning styles through differentiated instruction and spends hours planning and ensuring that each child achieves success. Her genuine love and compassion for her students is commendable and in turn, her students are happy, engaged and enthusiastic learners. Liana Williams – Unionville Liana’s commitment to student achievement and wellbeing, especially to special needs, becomes readily apparent when one considers the many school-wide activities she has organized to support these students. Liana continues to dedicate her time and effort to bringing awareness through school wide initiatives around issues of Mental Health and Wellness to both staff and students at Milliken Mills High School. She is engaged in social and charity events to promote people's wellbeing. She succeeds in the great job she does as an educator who is forming people that will change the world for the better starting at a very young age. She is a great role model for her students. Lisa Mathura – Newmarket As the Head of our school's English Language Learner (ELL) department, Lisa is extremely passionate about empowering the ELL community of students not just by helping them learn English, but by creating a sense of belonging in a new environment and encouraging them to get involved in positions of leadership. Mark Slade – Newmarket Mr. Slade takes the time to teach you in a way you will understand so no one is left behind. He is funny and keeps the students happy and positive every day. He is the track, cross country and basketball coach for school teams. Mr. Slade is kind, fair, honest, and optimistic and has great integrity. Next year’s students are lucky to have him and can look forward to a fantastic year. Michel Bergeron – Richmond Hill Mr. Bergeron is an amazing principal and a great role model to children and parents. He goes out of his way to assure everyone in the school is safe and happy and actively organizes assemblies, activities, clubs and trips. We are blessed to have an amazing principal with so many virtues like compassion, understanding, love, unity, justice, wisdom and perseverance. Miranda Scenna – Woodbridge Miranda demonstrates the virtue of perseverance with students and adults alike. Her calmness, kindness, compassion, and especially her good mornings and smiles lighten our school day. Miranda always shows to students and colleagues there is always a solution to every problem. In all our years of assisting students in many schools, Miranda definitely stands out the most with these qualities. Paul Bamberger – Aurora Mr. Bamberger is an exceptional educator. Whether in his role as vice-principal or as a teacher, he is very approachable. Mr. Bamberger is an incredible role model with integrity, compassion and a great sense of humour. He treats his students with respect and they learn by his example. He uses unique and creative ways to reach his students and to inspire them. April 29, 2015 Page 16 2015 Character Awards Nominees Priscilla Poon – Thornhill Ms. Poon has been actively involved in the planning and implementing of school-wide outreach initiatives to support those in our community that are seeking support. These initiatives include our local food bank, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Christmas basket program. Priscilla has worked tirelessly with staff and students on these initiatives and has demonstrated compassion for others in need. Rita Boyd – King City Rita embodies the belief that all students can learn and be successful when the appropriate time and supports are provided. Ms. Boyd leads her special education department team with respect and honesty and motivates her staff to engage each and every student with a learning environment that is differentiated, equitable and inspiring. Selina Holdsworth – Keswick As an Educational Intervenor at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in Keswick, Selina Holdsworth assists in the classroom by helping a child with specialized needs. But her compassion and caring extends to all of the children she interacts with on a daily basis. She doesn’t just go through the motions with her job; she is genuinely passionate and nurturing in how she interacts with each individual. Stephen Lewis Alt. Ed. Department – Adam Cox and Christina Yuan Adam and Christina work with students who are in need of guidance, misplaced in other courses, or who are better suited in an individualized program and smaller setting to have a second chance of being successful. Adam and Christina have promoted and inculcated the characteristic perseverance into the students in their Alternative Education Program. Sue Leuszler - Keswick As an educational assistant, Sue works in classrooms where a student has been identified with special needs. But that's only the technical description. She is as an educator who is compassionate, kind, and uplifting for students who require a helping hand. Often this kind of mentor is the difference between a frustrated child and one who begins to flourish. April 29, 2015 Page 17 2015 Character Awards Nominees Tracey Brake – Richmond Hill Tracey Brake-PhD, as the Department Head of Student Services at Alexander Mackenzie H.S., is investing incredible effort and creative support strategies for students with Special Education needs. She is making a positive impact on student achievement and well-being, and she inspires her team to prepare authentic and meaningful lessons to keep students engaged. Wendy O’Quinn – King City Wendy leads by example in advocating for all students and is never ending in her commitment to finding ways in which to provide for those who are most in need. In her role as an Educational Assistant at KCSS, Ms. O’Quinn reaches out to those who are most disenfranchised, disconnected or disengaged in order to support them both as individuals as well as students. Character Through the Arts Anna Sousa – Richmond Hill Anna is a registered Art Therapist. She works with individuals, couples, families and helps people in dealing with crisis, trauma, depression, and mental health issues through art. Anna is very approachable and demonstrates the Character by helping others express their feelings and emotions through Art. Dale Matsushige – Newmarket Dale has dedicated her life to teaching high school music students and performing in York Region. Dale has spent 15 years as a trombonist and Assistant Conductor of the Newmarket Citizens Band. She is also an active member of the After Hours Big Band and the York Region Staff Singers. Love Project – Keswick Love Project is a non-profit art program run on volunteer-basis that pairs youth in York Region with art mentors and provides access and opportunity within the arts. Youth are encouraged to share their artistic strengths in quarterly galas and through community partnerships and events. April 29, 2015 Page 18 2015 Character Awards Nominees Ron Robbins – East Gwillimbury Ron Robbins has volunteered as a mentor for the music program at Phoebe Gilman PS. His optimistic outlook has been a wonderful model for the students. Ron volunteers several days per week, ensuring all students feel important, included and empowered through music. Ron will attend the National Band Competition this year Toronto with the students in the grade 7 and 8 bands. Visual and Performing Arts – Newmarket Visual and Performing Arts Newmarket (VPAN) has nourished audiences over 18 years with the 3-concert Sunday afternoon series "Three for the Show." VPAN has thrived with loyal volunteers who have a passion to share their musical goals with an appreciative audience at the Newmarket Theatre. VPAN has also provided scholarships to the Newmarket Lions Music Festival and the Newmarket Voice Festival. York Regional Police Youth Band – Aurora The York Regional Police Youth Band was formed in October 2009 and has a complement of twenty eight highly talented students throughout the Region. This group of musicians have been very busy since their first performance at the York Regional Police Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Past performances have included entertaining the York Central Hospital Long Term Care unit, the Kick Off to March Break at Hillcrest Mall, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Keswick and Markham Santa Claus Parades, and the Faces of Markham event. Character Through Sports Edward Murray – Newmarket William "Eddie" Murray overcame many hardships but never let them get in the way of his love of sports. When Eddie moved to Canada, he immediately found a local soccer team to join called The Black Sheep. Now a Canadian Citizen, Eddie realized his dream of starting his own golf repair business and became a certified CPGA member. As a golf teacher, he had students of all skill levels. Eddie now works at Magna Golf club as a marshal and has no plans of retiring any time soon. April 29, 2015 Page 19 2015 Character Awards Nominees Georgina Minor Baseball Association – Keswick Georgina Minor Baseball Association (GMBA) is a quality, reputable & community oriented baseball Association that has proudly taught thousands of baseball youth and has been in existence for many decades. The GMBA offers baseball at a variety of levels and promotes equality and fairness among all its players, coaches, parents and volunteers. GMBA encourages the same Character Community attributes to ensure success for their players and community! Kelvin Johnston – Newmarket Kelvin is a year-round coach who volunteers tirelessly with a multitude of youth sports organizations: soccer, curling, basketball, hockey and sledge hockey. Kelvin believes fostering love of a sport in the athlete, ignites a desire for the athlete to do his or her best! His commitment spans from York Region to across the Province. Not one to focus only on winning, rather Kelvin strives to bring out the best in every athlete. When it comes to Kelvin and the game: all players play, and it is about fair play. Michael Smith – Newmarket Mike is recognized as someone in the community to go to when in need of support. Mike has been involved with local sports teams his entire adult life and coached soccer, football, hockey and lacrosse at many different levels. Mike is known for his ability to work with youth in an inclusive way. He guides young people, has been a true mentor for many, and demonstrates the importance of fairness in competition. Shawn Shepheard – Newmarket When Mr. Shepheard came to our school he became a friend to all of us. He taught us how to play hockey and makes sure everyone has an understanding of the sport. He promotes fairness and gives players courage to try new things. When things are hard he always sees the good side and takes time to make sure everyone has fun! St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic High School Athletic Council – Woodbridge St. Jean de Brebeuf's Athletic Council works to bring the school together, encouraging character development and school spirit. Their positive impact is rooted in events such as "Homecoming," which welcomes Alumni back to the school, and the 24 hour "Bearlympics" fundraising event in support of Right to Play Canada. April 29, 2015 Page 20 2015 Character Awards Nominees Business Person of Character Bob Goodland – Keswick Bob Goodlad is known as "one of Canada's Largest Florists", perhaps for the size of his heart. Every month, Keswick Flowers offers a "pay it forward", where they give away 30 bouquets of flowers to deserving individuals based on the nominations of others. This monthly event proves it’s not always about what you’re selling, but about giving back to people in need and people who do great things! Claudia Eiselt – Vaughan Claudia is deserving of recognition for her outstanding work and leadership as Supervisor of Employment Services with the Regional Municipality of York. In her role, she demonstrates compassion, integrity, respect and fairness with her staff, colleagues, Ontario Work participants and external community partners/agencies. Claudia exhibits unwavering dedication and strong moral character. Paul Connors – Keswick Music is in the air, the Connors’ must be there! From establishing a music store in 1978, to launching the annual ‘Music In The Streets’ in 1996, to supporting numerous local events, is just the tip the metronome for Paul, wife Thea and their great family! Where there's music, fun and community...you'll likely see and hear the Connors’ volunteering and providing great entertainment, music equipment and more! RJ Gorman – Keswick When it comes to community spirit in the Town of Georgina, RJ Gorman always comes to mind. As owner of the Gem Movie Theatre, RJ goes out of his way to host events and create a true community theatre. In 2013, the Gem Theatre partnered with Jericho Youth Services, to strengthen and improve children’s services and arts in the community. RJ is driven to make positive changes and often takes the initiative to try new and innovative ideas. Ron Yankiver – Richmond Hill Ron a successful businessman and a role model to his employees and the North York Community. He is always willing to impart of his time, knowledge and expertise in the sign industry. He is selfless in assisting other persons whether it is a business owner, religious organization, other charitable institutions and residents in and around the community. He actively participates in many charity events for the benefit of the community. April 29, 2015 Page 21 2015 Character Awards Nominees Sam Bozuk - Keswick Sam’s donations generate considerable life changing funds for many kids and families through the community events he kindly supports. Sam donates over 25 jewelry items worth thousands of dollars to Georgina Cares Live TV auction each year to help local families in need. Sam also supports Kidsfest, Georgina Challenge, Sutton Fair, Terry Fox Run, Hospice Georgina, Red Barn, Sandgate and many more local events. His heart shines brighter than any diamond! Sangeeta Rajan – Richmond Hill Sangeeta is an amazing woman. She was born in India, but moved to Kenya and then Canada to give her children a better opportunity. Five years ago, Sangeeta opened Obsessions Hair Salon and it wasn’t long before word got around of her compassionate ways. Sangeeta adjusts her salon prices according to the financial needs of unique clients. In a short time, she has serviced 2,335 clients that come from all over York Region, Mississauga, Durham and Toronto. Sharon Bates – Holland Landing Sharon Bates, owner of Tangles Salon and Spa, Holland Landing, has established the annual East Gwillimbury Women's Show to benefit Southlake Hospital Regional Cancer Program. This has become an extremely successful event, attended by over 300 people and has raised $42,000 to date for Southlake. Organization of Character – Profit Lisa Palmer – Holland Landing Valuable Lessons provides life skills workshops to children, teens, and young adults. Valuable Lessons seeks to help parents accomplish their goals of bringing out the best in their children, by supplementing home and school knowledge with engaging lessons including confidence, communication, goals, finance, and respect. For the past several years, Lisa Palmer has virtuously led the company, allowing Valuable Lessons’ Success Ambassadors (instructors) to instill solid character in the lives of local youth. April 29, 2015 Page 22 2015 Character Awards Nominees Positively Kind – Newmarket Positively Kind is the brainchild of triplets, Beth, Kit & Erin. Their mandate is to promote positivity, kindness, gratitude and acceptance through workshops, public speaking and written articles. Their Facebook page and newspaper column delivers messages and ideas for living positively to thousands in York/Simcoe regions and around the world. Their Intentional Acts of Kindness events have allowed hundreds of people to be beneficiaries of their stealth kindness actions. The triplets teach strategies to embrace the choices available that can transform moments and lives. Organization of Character - Not for Profit or Service Organization Addiction Services for York Region - (COTP) – Aurora ASYR supports change in the lives of individuals, their families and communities related to substance use and gambling. ASYR's mission, philosophy and values encompass all eleven Character Community attributes. ASYR serves their clients with compassion, fairness, inclusiveness and respect. With over ten different programs in place, ASYR respects the clients choice in their addiction treatment journey, be it opioid replacement therapy, abstinence or harm reduction. Bully Free Community Alliance – Newmarket Bully Free Community Alliance was started by two local Moms, who believe every student deserves and safe and happy school experience, and that bullying is a symptom of issues that need to be addressed. Their voices have not only made a difference locally, through Newmarket Bullying Awareness Week, but also at a federal level, as they invited to present submissions on Bill C-13 regarding Cyber bullying legislation. East Gwillimbury Fire Department Station 26 - Mount Albert Beyond fire safety, the Mount Albert Volunteer Fire Department has been doing something for the last 22 years that may surprise you: they have been helping families and individuals by providing food and gift Christmas hampers to individuals in need. As with many acts of charity, they started small, but over the years, the initiative has expanded to include a network of community groups, schools, businesses and individuals who contribute each year as the list of those in need grows. April 29, 2015 Page 23 2015 Character Awards Nominees East Gwillimbury Garden & Horticultural Society - Holland Landing The East Gwillimbury Garden & Horticultural Society, celebrating 90 years, is a group of volunteers who give their time and knowledge to enhance the beauty in the community. The Society promotes environmental protection through planting trees, shrubs and flowers. As an inclusive society, they encourage therapeutic gardening for many differently abled groups, and also educate and encourage youth to appreciate and enjoy the value of gardening. Elizabeth Johnston – Newmarket Elizabeth started a character building not-for-profit organization. Elizabeth focuses on character and business skills to build up women in York Region and help them achieve self-sufficiency. She has gained the trust of her peers as a leader and promotes complimenting, not competing, as a motto. She teaches women to get to know each other, treat others fairly and grow together in fairness. Georgina Cares Fund – Keswick Since 1996, Georgina Cares has helped hundreds of kids and families in need. As they confidentially fund extracurricular activities, medical equipment and special needs, Georgina Cares Fund are helping "kids be kids". Georgina Cares also helps local families who have experienced a significant, unforeseen, catastrophic occurrence, such as medical, accidental, death. It’s all about the community and the importance of not feeling alone in your time of need. Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation – Newmarket Southlake Foundation is a community organization whose mission, actions, and employees embody character to their very core. The Foundation is responsible for raising funds to directly support our world-class hospital and the community it serves. Its community funded initiatives show compassion, courage, and perseverance, while simultaneously uniting local residents for a worthy cause. Sutton & District Lions Club – Sutton West Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world every day because they share a core belief - to serve their community. Best known for fighting blindness, Lions volunteer for many different community projects including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled. Lions International now has a growing Lions group in Sutton and always welcome new Lions that are eager to help! April 29, 2015 Page 24 2015 Character Awards Nominees YouthSpeak Performance Charity - Newmarket Una is the founder of YouthSpeak, an organization dedicated to fighting for needs of youth, against bullying, substance abuse and mental health. Una’s personal and family experience gives her the drive and motivation to make a difference, to help before something happens, or before it’s too late. YouthSpeak not only employs 16 to 29 year olds, but also gives them experiences that in turn helps their own healing process. Change our World - Environmental Claudio D’Agostini – Maple Mr. Claudio D’Agostini is sparking students’ interest in environmental education as he leads the Ontario Eco School program at St. Cecilia Elementary School. His tireless commitment facilitates many opportunities for developing student leadership. The Eco Team, comprised of more than fifty passionate students, participate in initiatives and events, which encourage whole school and community involvement. Leigh McCarthy – Thornhill Ms. McCarthy is a steward of the environment. She has established the St. Anthony garden club to help build and maintain our butterfly garden to support the Monarch Butterfly population in our community. Ms. McCarthy has worked to include all students in the garden club, valuing every student's contributions. Lisa Naccarato – Thornhill Mrs. Naccarato has been instrumental in the development of an outdoor learning classroom and the establishment of a Monarch Butterfly garden at St. Anthony School. Mrs. Naccarato is optimistic that learning outdoors is beneficial for all students and the Monarch butterfly garden will help students to appreciate nature and additionally, help to support our Butterfly population. The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville Anti-Graffiti Through Art Campaign - Stouffville The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville Anti-Graffiti Through Art Campaign’s focus was to combat graffiti underneath two major bridge underpasses. Adjacent to public pathways, large murals produced by York Region District School Board secondary and elementary students were installed. The campaign was led by Onalee Creasor and Dawn Mossop art teachers at Stouffville District Secondary School. This campaign was truly a partnership and also involved the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville, York Regional Police and Home Depot (Aurora) who provided paint and supplies. April 29, 2015 Page 25 2015 Character Awards Nominees Change our World - Community Barry Nelson – Thornhill Barry lives, breathes, and demonstrates strong character traits that contribute to others every day. Over many years, he put great effort into making positive impacts: he served on school councils, led the Markham Culture Committee's facilitation event, chaired Heritage Markham, serves as President of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill, and has been a committed volunteer to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for over 20 years. If Barry takes it on, it's important. Cathy Dai – Markham Cathy is deeply passionate about social justice. She has dedicated most of her time to serve at local and global communities to raise awareness and mobilize youth in York Region to care for the underprivileged people. Cathy volunteers at Across U-hub, and her enthusiastic and cheerful personality motivates her peers not just to serve immigrant youths and needy living in GTA, but also earthquake victims in China. Elizabeth Blight – Newmarket Compassion, empathy, altruism, caregiving, and leadership are only a few ways to describe Elizabeth Blight. She is a lifelong member of the Newmarket Community who has given most of her time to helping others - not to mention mentoring and raising an entire family of giving individuals. It would be great to see a future award for Family of Character, for the Blight Family is very deserving, and it all began with Liz. Heather Skoll – Richmond Hill Heather organizes We Can Change the World Day – an initiative inspired to engage youth volunteers in York Region, and watch them grow as leaders while taking social action with global impact. Heather first got involved with Free the Children, and when Heather and her husband got married in 2009, they chose Free the Children as their charity that all wedding funds would be contributed to. Those thousands of dollars in gifts were enough to build a school classroom in Oloosiyoi, Kenya. Joanne George and Smiley – Stouffville Born without eyes, this beautiful golden retriever, Smiley, and mom, Joanne, have been a part of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program. Smiley and Joanne treat everyone they meet with kindness and compassion. It is their work with the most vulnerable populations that their compassion for others truly shows. Smiley is also a certified child therapy dog and teaches others that no matter what obstacles you face in life there is always a reason to smile. April 29, 2015 Page 26 2015 Character Awards Nominees Lily Edmunds – Newmarket Lily Edmunds is a AAA track/cross country athlete and Olympic hopeful. She is a recent Ontario Junior Citizen Award nominee and has raised thousands of dollars for York Region Charities by running in 5k races. Lily was honored as a special guest at the Dash to Defeat Dementia 5k run in August 2014 for all of her philanthropic work. Lily recently joined to become a board member on the committee to plan the 2015 Walk for Alzheimer’s with the Alzheimer Society of York Region. Mohammad Ali Khan – Newmarket Mohammad has been a member of Town of Newmarket's Inclusivity Advisory Committee since 2008. During the Committee's tenure, Mohammad has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to inclusivity and making a difference in the community. Mohammad made great efforts working towards consensus and was instrumental in planning inclusive events. Pledges for Change – Richmond Hill Pledges for Change is a youth-run non-profit organization that started in 2013. Its goals include fighting poverty, hunger, homelessness, mental illness and bullying by inspiring young people to take one action in support of a local or global causes featured every two months by the organization. In just over a year, Pledges for Change has inspired 16,000 people to take action by volunteering over 20,000 hours. Sharon Deebrah – Richmond Hill Sharon runs her own mission to make a difference and continues to do so in many ways. Sharon contributes greatly to the The Richmond Hill Presbyterian Church, The Rouge Wood North Residence Association, the Richmond Hill Aquatic Club, Ontario Swim Association of Officials, 360 Kids, The Heritage Advisory Committee, Richmond Rose Public School Council, YRDSB, election Campaigns, and Canadian Women's Network. Valerie Syratt-Luttrell – Newmarket Valerie has always been involved in our community from school councils, to "Walking for our Future" to "Hopefest" and more. She started the Grandparent Connection in 2014, with the main goal of bringing smiles to seniors. The Grandparent Connection not only helps seniors, but also community members and schools.
