I shall be a believer of all that is
good in man and of all that is deserving
in animals.
I shall plead for their lives,
campaign for their safety and uphold
their right to a natural death.
I shall seek out the injured and the
maimed, the unloved, and the abandoned
and tend to them in their last days.
I shall not forget their place in the
hierarchy of life, nor that we walk in
each other’s paths.
I shall bear witness to the wonder
they bring to our lives and to the beauty
they bestow upon our souls.
I shall renew their spirits when they are
waning, bind their wounds when they
bleed, cradle them when they whimper,
and comfort them when they mourn.
I shall be near them in their hour of
greatest need a companion and friend
when the time has come.
I shall watch over them and console
them and ask that the angels gather
them in their arms.
From the creatures of the earth
I shall learn the fruits of compassion &
undying love, and I shall be called the
beloved of God.
In their company I shall indeed
be blessed.
The Foundation is a registered non-profit
Charitable Organization in Canada and
Alberta: C.R.A. # 899091128 RR0001 Alberta
Charitable Organization License # 310154.
The Foundation operates a no-kill facility euthanasia as an option only when the animal
cannot enjoy a reasonable quality of life.
— Our Mission —
To care for cats in dire need and give our less fortunate feline
friends a warm, loving and caring environment that allows them
to live out their lives. To attempt to find loving homes for cats
and kittens that come into our care. To promote responsible pet
ownership through public education, early spaying and neutering
programs and promoting other care programs.
T
he Foundation was founded by
Marjorie Hervey in 1998 to provide
care and loving homes for the unwanted,
un-cared for and abandoned cats that
fall into our society. She used her family
inheritance and more to start and
establish The Foundation.Since that time
over 3,000 cats and kittens have come
into our care and most have found good,
loving homes. The balance stay with us to
live a quality life.
The Foundation’s prime objective is to
offer either a temporary or long-term
place of protection for injured, unwanted,
homeless and abused cats.
In line with this philosophy is the concept
of HOMING - this means that we provide
homes for these animals - either a new
loving, caring home or permanent home
at our facility for the cat to live a Quality
Life for the remainder of it’s life.
We provide a means of finding suitable
loving and caring homes for these cats.
In addition, we promote and educate the
public on the proper treatment of cats all
in keeping with the requirements of the
Animal Protection Act.
With costs in excess of $5000 every month
the Foundation needs the continued support of
the caring public to carry out our mission.
It takes 450lbs of dry cat food, 75 cases of canned
food and 800lbs of litter EVERY MONTH to take
care of the hundreds of stray, abandoned and
unwanted cats and kittens that The Hervey
Foundation for Cats takes in at their facility each
year. Many of these animals find new homes –
but many fall into permanent care at our facility.
Financial donations may be made by
mail, phone or paypal! Thank You!

Our primary concern is the cats under
our care. Great precautions are taken to
avoid introducing illness. For example, in
the situation involving a typical member
of the family our procedures would be as
follows: Cats that come into our care are
taken to an Accredited Veterinary Clinic
where, at the cost of The Foundation,
the animal would be examined and
Feluk tested, spayed or neutered, microchipped, de-wormed, vaccinated with the
4 way combination vaccine and Feline
Leukemia and Rabies (if old enough).
Its ears would be checked for ear mites
and treated. The cat is then transported
to our facility . It is placed in isolation
for observation for 4 to 5 days. If any
symptoms develop that needs attention,
then the cat is treated. Assuming all is
well, the cat is placed up for adoption
to find it a good home. The cats in our
care are not caged but are free to enjoy
an home atmosphere. If it clear that a
new acquisition could not be adopted for
some reason or another, it is made to feel
at home, is given a name, and it becomes
assimilated into our family.
The Foundation is unique throughout all
of Western Canada. The reason is quite
simple. No person has the patience and
the devotion that Marjorie has for the cats.

MARJORIE’S MESSAGE
Dear Supporters,
Welcome to the Summer edition of the
Mewsletter.
I hope that everyone got
through spring and is looking forward to
a beautiful summer. We have been very
busy at the sanctuary. This newsletter
will be fun to read – you will see pictures
of many of our recent adoptees, updates
on some of our cats adopted a while ago
as well as a bit of history. Sit back and
enjoy!!
In March 2014, we were contacted by
Petvalu in St. Albert inquiring if we would
consider placing cats for adoption in their
store. We were pleased to accept! The cats
at that location are allowed the “run” of the
store – they become greeters for the many
clients coming in to purchase supplies.
The wonderful staff at this beautiful store
take great care of the animals. We want
to thank everyone at the St. Albert Petvalu
for the fabulous job they do and the great
furr-ever homes they have found for our
kitties.
We were invited to participate in adoption
events at PetsMart Calgary Trail, as well
as at Petvalu Terwillegar and Petvalu
The Meadows.
Thanks to these stores
for including us and helping facilitate
adoptions.
The Foundation participated in The
Edmonton Cat Fanciers Club’s show on
March 29 and 30th and what a success it
was! The new location at the Ramada on
Kingsway was spacious with plenty of
room for judging, vendors and, of course,
the cats! Spectators were lined up to be
admitted, so it was busy, busy, busy.
The Foundation showed a number of cats
and they all did well – also, 4 cats were
adopted (pics elsewhere in the Mewsletter).
Thank you to The Edmonton Cat Fanciers
for the cat food drive held in conjunction
with the show.
The donations really
helped the Foundation! We look forward
to the next show – October 25-26 at the
same location.
Getting ready for the Annual Dinner and
Silent Auction was our next challenge. It
was a fun evening – a good turnout of
many long-term supporters plus a number
of new faces. In addition to the silent
auction for lovely items, we held a “Cake
Auction” of fancy tortes. Bidders had a
very short time to claim a cake and there
was hot competition for the tasty treats!
As usual, the food (German theme) was
excellent and much enjoyed. Thank you
all of the volunteers who helped make this
event such a success. And many thanks
to everyone who donated items for the
Auction – they were much appreciated.
Mark your calendar for April 25, 2015 –
watch for the announcement of theme and
location.
I would like to extend a heartfelt and
sincere thank you to all of the volunteers
who assist the Foundation in so many
ways. First of all – to Kathy and Margaret –
loyal volunteers who dedicate a lot of time
to the Foundation and give of themselves
unselfishly to help the kitties. Thanks to
Bob and Dave for all of the pick-ups and
deliveries that they do. A very special
thank you to new volunteers – Gillian, Bill
and Alex who were of invaluable assistance
at the recent Silent Auction.
Thanks to our on-going and loyal
supporters of the Foundation – your
generosity and caring are what makes the
Foundation work in our care of the kittens
that come to us.
We hope that you have a great summer and
look forward to hearing from you. Call
780 -963-4933 or email info@herveycats.com

A special thank you
to St. Albert PetValu for helping us find
Furr-ever homes for our kitties.
Michael Schaefer was our caterer for many years
for our dinner and silent auction. Many of you who attend knew Michael well and
had come to love his food. Michael was a wonderful and caring man. He loved cats
and he loved doing our function every year. He was a good teacher and involved
in the community and with other charities. Michael passed away suddenly on
May 24, 2014. This is a real tragedy to lose such a good and caring person. We
want to send our deepest sympathy to his wife Donna and to the family. We at the
Foundation will never forget Michael and he will be deeply missed.

Edmonton Cat Fanciers Club Show – March 2014/Calgary Show – April 2014
The Club was able to find a new location in central
Edmonton at the Ramada on Kingsway. The entries were
greater than at the last few shows which helped off-set the
increased cost of this lovely venue. The gate was also
gratifyingly larger as well. We received many positive
comments regarding the new space. Vendors were on
hand to entice folks to part with their money! There was
ample room for the spectators to move around, see the
cats and observe the judging. Spectators were welcomed
with a gift of a catnip toy for their own cat(s) and this was
well received. The club also encouraged folks to bring a
cat food donation for the Hervey Foundation and obtain a
$1.00 off their admission price. Many spectators brought
cat food – both canned and dry and it was turned over to
the Hervey Foundation.
Adoptables were encouraged to be in competition and
all of the cats on hand from the Hervey Foundation were
sponsored, that is, their entry fees were donated. Nine
adoptable kittens/cats were in competition and one
kitten was available for adoption only. Four of them
were adopted during the show and are settling happily in
new forever homes. The Club will be back at this location
October 25-26, 2014. Watch for the poster with details!

Within a few weeks, Kathy and
Margaret (Board Members) were on the
road with their own cats plus Hervey
adoptables. The show in Calgary was
held on Easter weekend and two sets
of kittens were once again at a show
and available for adoption. Our car
and hotel room were full of cats!!
The entry fees for these kittens were
sponsored by folks in Calgary and one
lucky kitten (Sheldon) was adopted
into a new home.
His cage-mate
(Shannon) was adopted the next week
in Edmonton through Petvalu!

HERVEY CATS ADOPTIONS!!!
Good Morning!
I wanted to give you an update on Sheldon whom I adopted last weekend on the weekend of the cat show in
Calgary. I have attached some pictures too. He is a wonderful cat. He did spend the first two days under the bed in
our bedroom as expected but as the days went on he started to come out and roam around. He seems to love the
second floor of our house which is the living room and the kitchen, he just seems to stay down there, maybe it’s
because of the big window and all the toys are there. When we go to bed or just lay in bed and watch a movie he
doesn’t seem to care to hang out with us.
He absolutely loves my adult cat whose name is Puffins, he follows him around all over and rubs up against him. My
adult cat is getting used to him and starting to play with him more, I think he was very unsure of Sheldon and what
he was doing in his house. Puffins is a very spoiled cat that was born into my family and not from a rescue so I think
he is a little more high maintenance some days.
Sheldon has been good he knows where the bathroom is and so far doesn’t scratch at the couch or anything. He is a
wonderful addition to our home so I thank you for letting me adopt him. I will continue to update you as he grows up!
Take care
Karley Thompson
Hi Marjorie,
We finally got around to
taking a family picture with
the kitties. I attached two of
them. The black and white cat
is Willow, and the white one is
Snowdrop (formerly Brittany).
Have a good day :)

Hi Marjorie!
Hi all!
I adopted Shauna at the cat show last
Saturday (full name is now Shauna Katya
Ambrosia)! After 1 week she has settled in
wonderfully! My 2 older cats (Foxy and Tava)
have accepted her as a little sister. I would
love to send a picture of all 3, but Katya does
not sit long enough! I have attached a pic of
her smiling:)
Thanks!
Leanne
It was so nice to see you again at the Cat Show on Saturday, and
give you an update on Carter’s adoption from the Fall Cat Show.
He is doing very well at 10 months of age, and is such a happy and
extremely affectionate little cat. He’s quite solid and sturdy for his
relatively small size, which makes him all the sweeter in our opinion.
Too bad he outgrew the striking clumps of hair hanging way down
out of his ears, although they remain very full of bushy hair, and he
has very long whiskers as you can see from the close -ups.
There’s one photo of him snuggling with Quincy for comparison.
They really like each other, and one is never too far from the other.
They love to thunder through the house running side by side. OzzieCarter has a very cute habit of carrying his toys in his mouth for
great distances, and up and down the stairs. His favourite is a long
plastic wand with a tinsel teaser on the end. He manages to carry
the entire thing all over the house and drops it at your feet indicating
he wants you to play with him.
We’re so lucky to have adopted such a perfect for our household,
plus such a wonderful companion for Quincy.
Regards,
Lydia & Gene Emanuel

THE HISTORY OF PET FOOD AND KITTY LITTER
The History of Pet Food
The first commercially prepared pet food was a dog
biscuit product introduced in England about 1860.
Although the site was overseas, the ingenuity was
Yankee. James Spratt, an electrician from Ohio, was
in London trying to sell lightning rods. He saw dogs
being fed left-over ship’s biscuits and decided he could
do better with a carefully compounded preparation of
wheat meals, vegetables, beetroot, and meat. It was
clearly a step in the right direction, for Spratt’s company
thrived selling food to English country gentlemen for
sporting dogs. Since these early efforts to provide pets
a more balanced diet, pet food makers have made
continuous improvements in the nutritional efficacy
of commercial pet foods. Today, advanced science
and nutritional knowledge go into creating complete
and balanced pet foods that result in pets living long,
healthy lives.Mother introduces son to kitten
The British public company that took over Spratt’s
formula and production began a U.S. operation about
1890. Several domestic firms entered the market with
their own formulations of fortified biscuits and dry
kibble based on the nutritional knowledge of the day.
Canned horsemeat for dog food was introduced in the
United States after World War I. In the 1930s, canned
cat food and dry meat-meal dog foods were introduced.
The 1950s saw the introduction of dry expanded type
pet foods through the adaptation of equipment used in
the production of breakfast cereals.
The Industry Expands
The ‘60s were marked with great diversification in the
types of food available to the pet owner -- dry cat food,
many more varieties of canned products, and new
soft-moist products. The National Research Council -the research arm of the National Academy of Science,
developed the first of several nutrient profiles based on
research at leading universities, much of it sponsored
by PFI or its member companies. The growth of the
pet food industry not only provided pet owners with
better foods for their pets, but also created profitable
additional markets for American farm products and
for the byproducts of the meat packing, poultry and
other food industries which prepare food for our own
consumption.
Regulatory Oversight
As the industry grew, regulations of the Food & Drug
Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
and state feed control officials (coordinated through
the American Association of Feed Control Officials)
evolved to provide additional assurance to pet owners
that the processing methods and quality controls
used by American pet food manufacturers meet the
same safety standards expected for foods for human
consumption.
Pet owners at this time were beginning to understand
the importance of balanced diets for dogs and cats, with
proper weighting of protein, fat, and carbohydrates,
and the inclusion of essential vitamins and minerals.
As a result, it is estimated that approximately 95
percent of the calorie intake of pet dogs and cats in
the United States comes from commercial pet food –
higher than in any other country.
PFI was founded in 1958 as the national trade
association of dog and cat food manufacturers and has
grown to represent the companies that make 98% of cat
and dog food produced in the United States.

The History of Kitty Litter
Like the origins of commercial pet food, the history of
cat litter is rather colorful.
Up until the late 1940s, indoor cats traditionally
used sand, soil, sawdust or fireplace ashes in which
to conduct their kitty bathroom business. Not
surprisingly, this makeshift cat litter was rather
inconvenient and messy.
Then along came Edward Lowe, a young Michigan
man who worked for his family’s industrial absorbent
materials business after returning from service in the
U.S. Navy during World War II.
Lowe first came up with the idea for a new-fangled cat
litter with retail potential when he was approached in
1948 by his neighbor, one Mrs. Kay Draper, who was
seeking an alternative to the impractical, unwieldy
sand and ashes she had been using.
He decided to give Mrs. Draper a product called Fuller’s
Earth, a clay-based substance his family’s company
sold to machine shops to help absorb industrial grease
and oils that would collect on the shop’s floors.
(Clay is now a no-no among green pet purists, but what
did folks know then?)
The next thing you know
…
Eureka! Kitty Litter is Born!
Mrs. Draper was so impressed with the nascent cat
litter, which provided ease of use, superior absorbency
and less mess, that she begged for more.
Realizing that other cat owners might react similarly,
Lowe decided to fill some bags with the stuff – which
he dubbed “Kitty Litter” – and paid a call to the local
pet store to see if the proprietor would be interested
in selling this.
The pet shop’s proprietor was initially skeptical, as he
doubted that people would pay for cat litter when they
could get sand, ashes and soil for much less, or free.
So the enterprising Lowe came up with a simple yet
brilliant promotional idea: He suggested that the pet
shop offer free samples.
Customers were so impressed that they began asking
for more, and were willing to pay the then princely sum
of 65 cents for kitty litter.
The rest, as the saying goes, was history.
—8—
Kitty Litter Takes the World Pet Market by Storm
Realizing he was onto something, Lowe began
showcasing his cat litter at pet shows, where his
product was met with universal enthusiasm.
Lowe and his kitty litter became so well-regarded in
the industry that he decided to capitalize on this by
going national in 1964 when he founded Edward Lowe
Industries which gave the world Tidy Cat, the first
large-scale, mass-produced cat litter brand.
Aside from offering a revolutionary pet product,
Lowe’s customer service savvy was legendary. Not only
did he insist on the highest quality ingredients for his
cat litter, he also ensured that each bag of Tidy Cat
contained a money-back guarantee.
The Evolution of Commercial Cat Litter
In the following years, kitty litter became one of the
hottest pet industry trends of all.
By 1990, Edward Lowe Industries was the world’s
largest maker of cat litter, with a whopping $210
million a year in sales.
That same year, Lowe sold his company to a venture
capitalist group for an estimated $200 million,
although he remained on as director of the now-named
Golden Cat Corporation. Following Lowe’s death in
1995 at the age of 75, Tidy Cat was acquired by Ralston
Purina, which was acquired in 2001 by Nestle.
Meanwhile, cat litter underwent a major metamorphosis
in 1984 when organic chemist Dr. Thomas Nelson
discovered clumping cat litter when he arrived at
the realization that dried (as opposed to baked) clay
provided superior absorbency and a nugget effect
when cats urinated on this.
Tidy Cat got on the clumping kitty litter bandwagon in
2000 with the introduction of Tidy Cat Crystals. This
took the traditional clumping cat litters to the next
level due to its superior odor control.
Cat Litter Goes Natural
The cat litter market, which is now a $1.3 billion a year
industry, is still dominated by the clay varieties.
But there is a growing trend toward natural cat litter.
Among the more popular, respected brands are:
Feline Pine
Swheat Scoop
World’s Best Cat Litter
Yesterday’s News (which is also made by Purina)
Indeed, cat litter has come a long way since the 1940s,
when an enterprising young man came up with a
simple idea that changed the world.
Cats everywhere owe a tremendous “meow” of
gratitude to Edward Lowe.
