Honors 10 English
Summer 2007
Over the summer, rising sophomores, including honors classes, will read John
Steinbeck’s The Moon Is Down. When you return to English class in the fall, everyone,
including honors classes, will write an essay using material from The Moon Is Down.
Throughout the year this text may also be used in reference to other texts that are read in
sophomore English. It would be a wise idea to take notes following the suggestions on the
handout for the book.
In addition honors students will also read John Steinbeck’s Travels With Charley.
Over the summer you will write a standard expository essay using one of the following
prompts. Please be aware that you should bring this essay to
class with you on the first day of Honors English.
Prompt Choice #1:
Steinbeck’s journey is America’s journey. The people, places, events, conflicts - the
beautiful and the ugly - are represented throughout Steinbeck’s journey. Using the text as
a basis for the response, explain how Steinbeck’s journey shadows America’s journey.
Topics to consider might include economic or social issues, nature, and/or justice.
Prompt Choice #2:
In many ways Steinbeck represents the typical American citizen. As he journeys crosscountry, he meets people who symbolize the idiosyncrosies of their areas. Explain how
your personal experiences parallel the places and/or people that Steinbeck encounters.
If at all possible, please computer generate your essay. Please double space and
use only 10 or 12 nonbold font. If you must handwrite your essay, please use blue or
black ink and write only on the front of the paper. Your essay, whether typed or
handwritten, must be legible in order to be read and graded.
Welcome to the 2007/2008 school year.
