Generate plenty of fun and anticipation among students and staff with some themed contests!* Decorative Doors Challenge teachers to decorate their classrooms using the Under the Sea theme. Ask students to vote on their favourite. Guessing Games Fill a large fishbowl with fishshaped crackers in a busy Fair. Have students guess how many there are to win a prize! Sea Creatures Encourage students and volunteers to dress as their favourite sea creature. Hold a contest the week of your Book Fair for the most original costume and announce the winners at the Family event. Tales From the Deep Ask students to write a brief story starting with the line, “In a lost city Under the Sea...” Post the entries near your Book Fair entrance and select a panel to determine the winners. Under the Sea Scavenger Hunt Organize a Book Fair scavenger hunt, encouraging families to work together for the prize! For an extra challenge, have students create clues that will lead their parents to the books they want to read. *Contests: Ask local sponsors for prize contributions and use your sample display posters as prize giveaways. Use Contest Ballots and Winner Certificates reproducibles provided. Make it a Family Event! Hold a special Family Event so parents and students can shop together. Try some of these fun and easy suggestions: Activity Corner — Set up a special area for younger children to read or colour while parents shop. Ask a volunteer or some older students to supervise. Ballot Box — Make a themed box to collect Family Event Door Prize ballots – place it near the cashier table. Classroom Wish List — Encourage teachers and families to grant book wishes. Invite local businesses to take part with donations to purchase Wish List books. Under the Sea Photo Op — Create a great white entrance out of insulation foam sheets. It doubles as a fun photo op for Family Events! Have one or two volunteers in costume greet visitors as they arrive for your Family Event. Student Showcase — Display contest entries, artwork, poems, stories and other theme-related items created by students. Volunteers* — Have your volunteers wear name badges to be easily recognized at the Fair. Under the Sea Craft Ideas: Have younger students create these crafts before the Book Fair. They can display their finished work at the Family Event. Ocean Coral Shape ocean coral out of colourful pool noodles. Sea Creatures Cut sea creatures out of foam sheets and add details with paint. Did You Know? Set up students’ under-the-sea art project featuring “did you know?” facts throughout your Fair. Jelly Fish Make jellyfish out of paper lanterns, ribbon, tissue paper, and plastic table covers. Create a Fun Atmosphere! Try some of these fun ideas to create an atmosphere that’s full of excitement! Ask volunteers and creative students to lend their talents. FISH TALES – For some entertaining fun, invite students’, parents and grandparents to share their best fish stories, a.k.a. exaggerated tales, during your Family Event. Change out the book you promote each day. Reach Your Book Fair Goals! Make your Book Fair a blast and encourage your school and community to reach those literacy goals. Try these fun ideas: FUN! COOL! Catch everyone’s attention with a giant fish Book Fair goal chart. Track your school’s Fair progress by colouring in its stripes. Make under-the-sea picket signs with fun Fair phrases. Schedule Student Crew members to parade by the school’s pickup/drop-off area during the day. NEW! SWIM THIS WAY – Strategically place a dolphin and school of fish on a hallway wall, directing kids to the Book Fair. Let kids write titles of recently read books on the fish.
