Here’s all you have to do! First check the list of items and mark
the ones that appeal to you. Listen to the Auction on the Radio. At
8:30 a.m. the Special Clarion Rotary Switchboard opens and will
remain open until 3:00 p.m. Phone 393-1704 and give your bid amount
for the item you desire to the bid taker along with the item number, your
name and phone number, or your bidder number. A Rotary Club
member will immediately inform you of the highest bid up to the
moment.
Pre-assigned auction numbers are available now to save time
the day of the auction. To receive your pre-assigned number, call 2269161 until Friday, March 6. You may also pre-register by calling the
Rotary Auction switchboard at 393-1704 from 8:00AM to 8:30AM on
Auction Day, Saturday, March 7. (Note: New bidder numbers are
assigned each year. Please do not use a bidder number from a prior
year.)
Please reduce your talking to a minimum so others will have an
opportunity to bid before the period closes. Your bid will be verified by
phone if you are the high bidder. You were not the high bidder if you
do not receive a confirmation call within an hour of the close of a
period.
You can pay for, and pick up your Merchandise Certificate from
1-4 pm, Sunday, March 8 at the Clarion Chamber Office located at 21
North 6th Ave., Clarion (226-9161).
MasterCard and Visa are accepted. YOU MUST HAVE A
CERTIFICATE TO PICK-UP MERCHANDISE. The certificate must be
redeemed at the establishment of the merchant that donated the
merchandise within 60 days of the auction unless otherwise specified.

Clarion Rotary: Over 50 Years and Going Strong
The Rotary Club of Clarion celebrated its 50th anniversary in April,
2011. Clarion Rotary has an excellent
track record of community service as
highlighted elsewhere in this special
tab, but let’s take a look back at the
history of the club.
The Rotary Club of Clarion first
held its charter presentation on
Wednesday, April 5, 1961, at the
Onized Clubhouse in Clarion. The
Knox Rotary Club sponsored the Clarion club. Merrill Cargo, Bill Hearst,
B.M. Davis, and Charley Robbe came
from Rotary in Knox to form the nucleus of the new Clarion club. The
Knox club disbanded in later years and
many of its members joined the Clarion group.
Toastmaster for the charter meeting
1961 was Phil Hammer, a past district
governor and official founder of the
Clarion club.
The first officers and directors of
the Clarion club were: Carl J. Snyder,
president; William C. Hearst, vice president; Merrill C. Cargo, secretary; Byrd
M. Davis, treasurer; Merritt H. Davis,
Phillip J. Gallagher, and Charles W.
Robbe, directors. Hearst was the only
member to serve as president of both
the Knox and Clarion clubs.

H. Arner, Charles R. Alexander, C.
Fred Becker, Harry F. Brooks, Henry
G. Burns, Merrill C. Cargo, Fred
Cochran, J. Paul Crooks, Dr. L.E. Corbett, Byrd M. Davis, Merritt H. Davis,

William C. Hearst, Russell C. Hepler

After it was chartered, the new
Clarion club held its weekly meetings
at the Modern Diner. The popular
diner proved to be a good location for
the club, with many of its founding
members working in businesses on a
booming Main Street.
The Rotary Radio Auction, now the
club’s largest fundraiser in support of
local service projects, first started as
an auction of donated material off of a
flatbed truck at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Main Street. Clarion residents would place discarded items in
front of their homes and Rotarians
would collect the “merchandise” for the
auction. Patterned after a similar auction by the East Brady Rotary Club, the
auction required the participation of
every Rotary member and the wives
often made cookies for sale at the
event.
Following the demolition of the
diner for what is now CVS, meetings
were moved to the Holiday Inn (now
the Comfort Inn) and were later at the
Sheraton, Clipper, Comfort Inn, the
Clarion American Legion and it’s current location at the Clarion Forest Visiting Nurses Association office.
Meetings are held Mondays at 12:10

What does the Clarion Rotary Club do?
The annual Clarion Rotary Radio Auction
is always a good time to ask a basic
question. What does the Rotary Club of
Clarion do?
Quite a lot, thank you.
Rotary is a service organization
dedicated to providing volunteer services
to the Clarion community. A wide variety
of service projects ranging from youth
leadership and scholarships, to community
improvements are undertaken each year.
Support from fundraising projects such as
the Rotary Radio Auction help make
possible the many Rotary service projects.
Some of Clarion Rotary’s past local
projects and recipients of Rotary support
include:
•$1,000 annual scholarship (Amy Davis
Scholarship) available to residents of
Clarion County. Based on academics and
volunteerism, details can be found at
www.clarionrotary.org.
•$1,000 annual Clarion University
scholarship is available to residents of
Clarion County based on academics and
volunteerism. Details are available at
www.clarionrotary.org.
•$1000 annual Clarion Career Center
scholarship (Tom Burckhardt Scholarship)
for an outstanding student.
•Over $1000 High School Youth
Scholarships for 10 students to the annual
World Affairs Conference in Pittsburgh.
•Over $5,000 for 12 students to attend
the weeklong Rotary Youth Leadership
Award (RYLA) during summers. Local
high schools students attend a leadership
camp at Westminster College to gain
important leadership skills. Students who
attend RYLA can also apply to
Westminster and receive a $15,000 per
year scholarship for your four years.
•Over $2,000 for ten students to attend
the Rotary Outstanding Vocational Award
(ROVA) program. Local high school
vocational students attend a leadership
camp with other vocational students from
around northwester Pennsylvania.
•International Polio Plus fundraiser to
eradicate polio from the world.
•Shadow day for area high school
students. Students spend a day with local
business leaders in their respective
businesses to help students understand
available career choices.
•Rotary International Exchange Student
Program (inbound and outbound). Recent
students have included students in Brazil,
France, Argentina, Venezuela, India and
Finland.
•Cook Forest Sawmill Theater. Hands
on renovations to prepare their theater for
their summer program.
•Clarion Hospital. Financial support for
the Cancer Center and Pediatric
Playroom.
•Clarion Free Library. Card catalogs,
