Meditation Garden (Macleod Biltz) – Working Bee
The working bee for the meditation garden will take place on Saturday 5 September from 9am
until 1pm. BBQ lunch will be provided at 1pm. It is hoped that we can get some of the larger
jobs completed on that day so that the site is ready for students to work on during the week.
It is our intention that each class will be timetabled to undertake a specific task for one period
during environmental week and that by the end of the week the bulk of the garden will be
completed.
Meditation Garden (Macleod Biltz) – Crowd Funding
We are currently trying to raise money to fund work on the new meditation garden and parents
are asked to go to the following website https://www.chuffed.org/project/macleod-collegemeditation-garden to see our crowd funding video and plans. Parents are also asked to share
this link with their contacts, as the garden will be a wonderful resource for the College and the
local community.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP 2015/16 SELECTION PROCESS
Chaplaincy
Chocolate Drive
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to take chocolates to
sell to raise some money for the Chaplaincy and Wellbeing
program. Extra thanks to those who took more than one box, in
particular to Lucas Seymour whose family have sold 8 boxes!
We should raise around $1000 which is pleasing. The money
is due back now and it would be great to have everything
finalised before the end of term. We still have a couple of extra
boxes, so if anyone was able to sell another one, please let me
or the office know – that would be great, thanks!
Heidelberg Theatre Company Play
We are hosting another Heidelberg Theatre Company play,
after a successful and enjoyable night in February. This time
the play is ‘Quartet’ which is well known as the film version
with Maggie Smith, Judy Dench and Billy Connelly. I’m sure
the HTC will do a great job too, so come and join us on
Wednesday September 16th at 8pm at 36 Turnham Avenue
in Rosanna. Tickets are $25 Adults, $20 Concession and are
available at the College Office.
Shopping Tour
The Shopping Tour is on again, this time on Saturday
October 17th. The price is still $65 and includes a very nice
lunch. Get yourself some bargains and have a fun day with
some friends too! Please book your place at the office.
Thank you for your ongoing support,

Badminton
The Year 7 Boys and Year 8 Girls Badminton Teams
competed in the Northern Metro Badminton competition at the
Darebin Community Sports Stadium on Thursday 20th August.
On a friendly, sunny day both teams competed fairly and
commendably for a place in the state competitions. The Year 7
Boys Team excelled throughout their group stages, winning a
place in the final. There the boys rallied against a highly skilled
University High outfit and left as runners up. The Year 8 Girls
Team suffered injury throughout the day and can be
recognised for their great efforts.
The boys and girls should be really proud of their effort and
sense of fair play. Both teams made Macleod proud with
outstanding court etiquette and hospitable interactions with
their peers. Well done boys and girls!
As many parents and students are aware the College
changes its student leadership positions each year at the
beginning of term 4 for the following school year.
Students and parents should be talking about the leadership
opportunities being offered at the College and discussing the
benefits in taking on a leadership position.
Student Leadership is an important focus of Macleod
College. Taking on leadership positions enables students to
develop public speaking, team work and communication
skills. It also gives students a sense of responsibility and
provides the opportunity to develop future directions for the
College as well as undertake tasks which will make a
difference to the life of students at Macleod College and the
wider community.

International Students
Ocean (Nam) TSE has been a temporary international
student at Macleod College in Year 3 with Mrs
Kouryialas. Ocean was here for the first 4 weeks of term
3. He travelled from Hong Kong with his mum and they
stayed with the Yeung family and Joshua, who was also
in his class. Ocean’s dad arrived in Australia and was
able to join Ocean and his Mum to thank and farewell his
friends and everyone who helped make his time at
Macleod College so memorable.
Friends are so easily made when you smile and all the students in his class, and
others, have benefited from meeting Ocean and his family. Our international
students bring a world of different languages, cultures and experiences to school
and we are always so happy to share our classrooms and homes with them.
Farewell Ocean, it was short but you really made an impact on your teachers and
friends.
Do you or someone you know have a spare room and would like to host and an International Student for a short
or long stay? Just about anyone can do it.
When looking for a homestay family we ask ourselves whether the family has, or could have, each of the
following criteria in place:• A furnished spare bedroom with a bed, wardrobe, desk and lamp (or alternative study space)
• Ability to pass a Working With Children Check for all over 18’s in the house
• Provide a welcoming and caring home away from home by including the student in the families commitments and
social calendar.
• Provide quality food and living standard, no extravagance required.
• Encourage the student to immerse themselves in Australian culture and the English language, making networks to
enhance the student's experience
• Provide the complete package for a weekly fee of approx $280 (personal expenses excluded)
• Is there a student that will fit with this family based on personal preferences, extracurricular activities and family
composition?
We currently have 2 students placed with local Macleod College student families as well as 1 with local business owners.
Next year the number of students requiring homestay is about to explode with 20 students already needing a
home from the end of January 2016.
Can you say yes to all of the criteria above? Are you interested? Remember you don’t have to commit to a lifetime of provision and you can always change your mind as your circumstances change.
Please contact the International Student Office for a Homestay Information package OR drop by our office in the
Impact Centre when you attend the upcoming Parent Teacher Interviews and collect the package and we can
answer any questions you might have.

VTAC APPLICATIONS - Don’t forget to make a VTAC course
application if you plan to study next year. Applications are now
open, and close for timely applicants on 30 September (cost
$29.00). If you apply after this date the cost rises considerably.
Remember that you can change your application as many

it ‘right’ the first time you apply.
See: www.vtac.edu.au. You will need to register as an
applicant first; after that you can apply using the ID number
VTAC supplies you with when you register. Also apply if you
plan to take a year off from study in 2016. You are able to
defer Taking up the offer of your place for a year in many
cases. You can apply for up to 12 courses, placing them in the
order you most want them. You will be offered a place in the

(eg ATAR).
The University of Melbourne has consulted widely with
industry, employers and graduates to develop the new
Bachelor of Agriculture. Be empowered with general,
technical and problem-solving skills to work in this
growth area. You will study soil science, plant science and
animal care, and learn to work in teams to improve animal
production and welfare through to addressing climate
change and food sustainability. There are MANY career
opportunities available for graduates, and positions are often
difficult to fill due to a shortage of applicants.
NOTE: the B. Agriculture is a possible pathway into studying
veterinary science at the University of Melbourne. Info:
http://fvas.unimelb.edu.au.
ELITE ATHLETES AND ARTISTIC PERFORMERS The
university encourages international, national and state
representation in sports and artistic performance and
recognises the impact that training and participation may
have on the ability to achieve admission into degrees. The
Elite Athlete and Artistic Performers Entry Scheme
provides for additional consideration to be given for entry into
degrees by elite athletes and artistic performers who meet
the prerequisites of the course and can demonstrate that
their training, competition, performance and/or practice
ommitments have interfered with their previous studies.
Students interested in applying for this scheme must apply
for their degree through VTAC in the usual way, and go to:
http://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au, then to Admissions
and Applications and to High Achievers Programs.
NOTE: If you wish to apply for some Fine Arts specialisations
at the University of Melbourne (VCA), applications close
early (28 August). These specialisations are: animation,
dance, film and television and screenwriting.

2016 they will have the option of Jazz & Improvisation or
Interactive Composition as two new specialisations. These
two specialisations currently sit within the BFA

(VCA) but will move across to the MCM. Info:
http://mcm.unimelb.edu.au.

Cake Bake for World Vision 40 hour Famine - Please help!
On Wednesday August 26th we are asking all Prep to year 12 students to bring to school a donation of cake or cupcakes to be
sold at lunch time. All the proceeds from the cakes will go to the World Vision 40 hour Famine. Hunger and malnutrition is the
world’s number one health risk. One person in eight goes to bed hungry each night and 850 million people don’t have enough
food to be healthy and lead an active life. Poor nutrition causes nearly half of deaths in children under five – 3.1 million each
year.
Could you please bake a cake or cupcakes and get your child to bring them on Wednesday to sell at lunch time. Can you please
attach a list of ingredients with the cake or cupcakes. Cakes will be sold for $1.00 a slice. I have attached a form for this below.
We will also be having a guessing jar competition for $1.00 a guess, or 3 guesses for $2.00. Person who guesses correctly will
win the jar.
Please contact me via the office if you have any concerns, or would like further information.
