 A Celebration of Extraordinary Women who Inspire TORONTO, ONTARIO (May 3, 2011) – On Thursday May 5th North York Women’s Shelter will be hosting our 6th annual Mother’s Day fundraising event Hope Gala. The gala is the largest fundraising event for the shelter and a celebration of extraordinary women. NYWS will be presenting the annual Hope Award to Peggy Nash, newly elected Member of Parliament for Parkdale High‐Park. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and record of contribution to improving the lives of women and children. For more than two decades Nash has been an advocate for women’s equality and social justice. “In a world that often pushes women’s rights aside, organizations like North York Women’s Shelter are truly a beacon of hope. It is a privilege and an honour to receive the Hope Award” said Peggy Nash. Ms. Nash will present an award to Gloria John, a former resident of NYWS. Reflecting on her experience at NYWS, John said, “Support of the staff at the shelter through the meetings, discussions, and counselling has helped my children and I move on with our lives and find peace.” “Peggy Nash has dedicated her career to promoting women's rights and social justice. We see her as woman of courage and strength, as someone who truly inspires hope.” said Charlene Catchpole, Executive Director of North York Women’s Shelter. The evening’s entertainment will feature Juno nominated Jazz artist Elizabeth Shepherd and all proceeds from Hope Gala will go be benefit the life saving work of North York Women’s Shelter. ‐30‐ North York Women’s Shelter is an emergency shelter for abused women and children.
