MICA (P) 088/03/2008. the blue heron 1 FOREWORD Grand Start to a New Year 2008 ended on a positive note for Jurong Country Club. Not only did we enjoy an overwhelming turnout for our New Year’s eve party on 31 December. More encouragingly, we closed the year with satisfactory results, despite a couple of months’ poor showing when the course was played on alternate greens. Secondly, our first event for the year was also our first-ever “Art for Charity Exhibition” which concluded successfully. Featuring local artist Ms Christina Chen, we had an amazing turnout that included the illustrious Dr Ho Kah Leong and Mr Tan Khim Ser. We thank Christina for generously contributing two beautiful paintings of the golf course to the Club. These paintings now line our lobby walls for members’ appreciation. What’s more, since the start of the new year, our greens have been recovering well. They are now in better shape to cope with the returning golf traffic. Golfers have noticed the improvement through the healthier colour, better ball speed and smoother putting surface. We are not resting on our laurels and we assure members that our course maintenance team is constantly looking for better ways to manage our greens. A new treatment plan against the dreaded nematodes is in place and we look forward to better results with a new organic and PUB-approved chemical. To ensure evenness between playability and sustainability, we hope members understand that we are unable to lower the mowing height drastically. However, we are mindful of your playing needs and will strive to meet the right balance. Return of the Weekly Range Nites For those who miss the fun and excitement of our Weekly Range Nites, look out for the return! Join us every Wednesday at the Driving Range from 7pm to 10pm. In my third year now, I am still facing the challenge of getting the lady members to participate in monthly medals and club events, due mainly to the high cost of the tournaments. The Ladies Committee had tried points system with rewards and lucky draws to attract the members and we have seen some results. I deeply appreciate the Ladies Committee’s efforts to engage existing members and reach out to new members to participate in club events. Also, special thanks to the lady members who have taken their valuable time to participate in club events. There will be an Annual Evergreen Event on the 4th of April. This will be an individual competition, followed by dinner and game, with attractive prizes. The venue is at Green Banyan and I hope all ladies will join in. SLGA league will start in March 09. We have commenced our in-house training programme that is conducted by Heartland Golf School in February. My sincere appreciation to the Pros in Heartland Golf School for their efforts, and I value the dedication and hard work of my league players. The ladies had done quite well in ’08 SLGA league. We came in 4th and 2nd in A & B Divisions respectively. I hope we will surpass our last year’s record and keep our JCC flag flying high. We will hold our Jurong Charity Open in August instead of June this year due to poor response because of the June school holidays. The new timing should also help if there is a change of golf committee. The new committee will have more time to organize this major event when the past committee hand over on March 31st . We have just completed the renovation of the Ladies’ Changing Room. It is now brighter and more spacious for the ladies to mingle and freshen-up before and after their game. Hope all ladies will enjoy the new facilities. Happy Golfing. Loh Ju Fern Lady Captain There will be an Annual Evergreen Event on the 4th of April. Staggered over four sessions in order to accommodate the various working needs of the staff, the sessions proved fruitful and allowed better interaction as GM Peter Goh shared on the Club’s performance for last year and indicated the challenges facing us in this 2009. At the end of the insightful session, staff were given mandarin oranges to share in the blessings of the Lunar New Year season. Strong and Silent A strong and resilient staff, Zaini Bin Selamat goes about achieving his tasks quietly, but the quality of his work is never in question. As an S&R Supervisor, Zaini is known as the one totally immersed in his work and responsibilities, which include sports activities and social events. His quiet contributions to the Club’s service quality and pleasantness was evident even to outsiders who decide to hold their events in the Club. During both the Tennis Masters and Asean School Tennis Championship last year, Zaini worked long hours to ensure the event was executed smoothly. His commitment contributed significantly to the success of the event and even drew the attention of the organisers of the ASEAN School Tennis Championship, who singled him out for special praise. Such quality work certainly did not go unnoticed and we are proud to announce that Zaini Bin Selamat has been awarded the Best Employee Award for the Quarter Oct to Dec 2008. The strong and silent Zaini extends his appreciation to Jurong Country Club for honouring him with this award. the blue heron 5 HERON’S NEST Go Au Naturale When In Jurong Besides being a paradise for both day and night golfing, the emerald greens in our course hide various natural cures for common daily ailments. Aptly enough, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club has captivated the golfing fraternity with its charm since its opening in early 1998. Boasting a stunning 18-hole championship course designed by the ace Australian architect, Ross Watson, Kota Permai is indeed a serene and beautiful place, despite its location in the middle of one of the Klang Valley’s model property developments - the award-winning Kota Kemuning township. Kota Permai Golf & Country Club serves as a lush, green centre-piece for the township and, indeed, the club was designed to be very much a part of local community life. Watson’s intelligent design is challenging yet fair, with playing options for all levels of golfers. The design and construction also reflect a desire to be ‘one’ with nature, and this is reflected in the wildlife that inhabit the waterways and mature trees. Today, Kota Permai continues to raise the bar for the Malaysian golf course industry as it forges ahead with unwavering commitment in its quest to become an icon of Asian golf. Playability dropped to sorely low levels, as did the golfing traffic. Through an intensive treatment programme, we are glad to announce that our emerald greens have returned to their healthy levels since August last year. With consistent nurturing, the green speed has progressively increased from 6ft last year to 7ft now. Regular fans that refrained from playing while the greens were recovering are now happy to return with friends for enjoyable rounds on the course. Using the stimpmeter and measuring the speed of the greens. While the situation has improved now, we must stay mindful of the fact that the golf course is a breathing living system affected by various factors such as weather, golf traffic, disease, age, the macro and micro environment. Continuous TLC (tender loving care) is showered upon the course every day by our Course Maintenance team, who are also under constant strain to ensure the course keeps up its healthy green. On keeping the greens at its optimum playing level, Golf Course Manager Cheong Ming assures members that “we will continually strive to ensure the green speed is maintained at the best playing levels. However, the course is very much subject to various macro and micro factors, which invariably affect the green speed. We certainly hope to improve the green speed to a higher level, and hope that members will cooperate with us in the care of the green and observing the club’s rules, as these are put in place to help us maintain a most conducive environment, both for the golfer, and the green”. 3 one way & 3 the other An average of 6 readings are taken per green HOW NEMATODES AFFECTED OUR GREENS Turfgrass roots suffering from nematode damage have impaired ability to take up water and nutrients from soil, thereby requiring more frequent irrigation and fertilizer applications. This may lead to waste of precious fresh water resources, increase the risk of groundwater contamination with nitrates and necessitate increased fungicide use by creating conditions ideal to outbreaks of fungal diseases. Nematode affected turf is also less competitive with weeds and may require increased herbicide use. Of even greater direct concern to turfgrass managers, the turf may become chlorotic, wilt, thin out, and die. - Source: William T. Crow, Nematologist, University of Florida. We all know that it is the job of the Golf Course Superintendent to care for our beautiful golf course, and that he does a great job. However, r, as members of the club, it is very much your responsibility to do your our part in looking after the club as well. The area of the golf course that always comes under the most scrutiny is on the greens. We all know that maintaining the greens is a delicate process that has challenges such as weather constraints, viruses, parasites and heavy usage. With all of these hurdles it is imperative that we as golfers do not further contribute te to any maintenance issues. One of the golfer-related problems that occasionally surfaces is damage to the edge of the hole. This usually occurs due to 3 errors: 1. Players stepping on the hole 2. Players stabbing the hole with the flag when replacing it 3. Players scraping the hole while digging the ball out with a club Most of these issues arise out of carelessness on behalf of the golfer. The only way to prevent this damage is to consciously ensure not to cause damage. Some golfers try to excuse themselves from digging the ball out of the hole with their club, claiming they have a bad back and cannot bend over to pick itt out with their hand. For those that may have a back condition, there are a few w ways to avoid using your club and damaging the hole: 1. Putt out and have a playing partner retrieve your ball when they get theirs out 2. Have your GA retrieve the ball for you (remember a little extra when tipping ng them at the end of the day!) 3. Purchase a rubber ball grabber that attaches to the grip of your putter (available in your JCC Pro-Shop) If we all do our part the golf course will be more presentable to all players and every member and guest will have a more enjoyable day on the course. the blue heron 17 CALENDAR OF CLUB EVENTS MARCH 6 Friday LENGE AL GYM CH 14 7 Saturday EDALS A&BM 17 22 FISHING ITION COMPET 29 15 Sunday GUE SGA LEA (PM) “B” DIV 20 Tuesday 26 Sunday jurong country club Friday E ALLENG GYM CH 16 Monday UTH HSBC YO NGE ALLE GOLF CH 21 Friday LENGE Thursday 31 27 Friday LLENGE A GYM CH Tuesday GUE SGA LEA ONG E-JUR PRACTIC Saturday ED COMBIN ORD STABLEF ITION COMPET AL GYM CH BERS JCC MEM A F/G VS STAF ITION COMPET TEAM JUNIOR TENNIS 18 Saturday L/ C MEDA LS EDA LADIES M UTH HSBC YO NGE ALLE GOLF CH Sunday 13 CALENDAR OF CLUB EVENTS APRIL T FOR U O H C WAT NIGHT A L O B TOM APRIL! During the opening address, each Guest of Honour complimented Christina a for her dedication, hard work and outstanding talent while GM Mr Peter Goh thanked Christina for her kind contribution of two paintings of the golf course to the Club. The paintings of our golf course now stand majestically at the entrance to the Admin Office for all to admire. Starting off with in-house games organised within the Club’s premises, campers had the opportunity to experience ence team-building games with each other to strengthen theirr trust in the team and boost their self-confidence. Aside from intensive ensive swimming training and incredible water games to build up their stamina, they were also treated to new experiencess such as inline skating and fencing. Campers even took their own initiative to band together in movie marathons and otherr sporting games during their free and easy times. The third day saw the troopers visiting a Goat and Vegetable able Farm. Over at Qian Hu Fish Farm, our little troopers took k the opportunity to indulge in some longkang fishing (drain fishing), something ething youngsters of today y have probably never experienced. They were also given some interactive learning on oil production during our visit to the Sunbeam Oil Factory Learning Lab. Even after a tiring day, our little troopers still had enough energy to splash it out with Changi Beach Club swimmers for a “Clash of the Titans” duel back at the Club, before ending their last night together with an enjoyable BBQ dinner. The last day saw over 60 participants join our campers in the closing event for the Swim Camp, which was the JCC Christmas Charity Mass Swim. We thank all parents, families and participants for helping us raise $744.45 at this event, which will be channelled to our JCC Charity Fund. Our campers sure had a great time and learnt that swimming is not just an individual sport, but that it is a team effort where everyone plays an important part. 26 jurong country club LIFESTYLE Pioneer Champs Tennis Friendly On 24th January 2009, we saw more than 30 players from both JCC and Pioneer Junior College (PJC) turn up for a friendly match.
