FOREWORD
Grand Start to a New Year
2008 ended on a positive note for Jurong Country Club. Not only did we enjoy
an overwhelming turnout for our New Year’s eve party on 31 December. More
encouragingly, we closed the year with satisfactory results, despite a couple of
months’ poor showing when the course was played on alternate greens.
Secondly, our first event for the year was also our first-ever “Art for Charity
Exhibition” which concluded successfully. Featuring local artist Ms Christina
Chen, we had an amazing turnout that included the illustrious Dr Ho Kah
Leong and Mr Tan Khim Ser. We thank Christina for generously contributing
two beautiful paintings of the golf course to the Club. These paintings now line
our lobby walls for members’ appreciation. What’s more, since the start of the
new year, our greens have been recovering well. They are now in better shape
to cope with the returning golf traffic. Golfers have noticed the improvement
through the healthier colour, better ball speed and smoother putting surface.
We are not resting on our laurels and we assure members that our course
maintenance team is constantly looking for better ways to manage our greens.
A new treatment plan against the dreaded nematodes is in place and we look
forward to better results with a new organic and PUB-approved chemical. To
ensure evenness between playability and sustainability, we hope members
understand that we are unable to lower the mowing height drastically. However,
we are mindful of your playing needs and will strive to meet the right balance.
Return of the Weekly Range Nites
For those who miss the fun and excitement of our Weekly Range Nites, look out
for the return! Join us every Wednesday at the Driving Range from 7pm to 10pm.
This time, we have planned a double-win programme that assures you instant
wins while you chalk up chances at a grand lucky draw. The Pro Shop is also
planning a one-day mega sale, so look out for more details on page 34.
For the Waist and Wallet
No, we are not talking about a crash diet. We are talking about five new caloriechewing machines in our Gym to help you trim the new year goodies off your
waist, while fattening your wallet with more savings at our F&B outlets… by the
hundreds! We know it is a difficult time out there, so we are making it easier for
you in here. Why dine elsewhere when dining and wining at the Club now earn
you more savings? Turn to our Wine and Dine section for the host of savings we
have in store for you.
Oh! For the Love of Wine!
Don’t let the recession pull your spirits down! Look out for a host of special wine
events planned by the Lifestyle team, with the major highlight being a 7-day trip
to Perth to indulge in two of man’s best vices – wine and golf! This will be one
unique event that I would not want you to miss. We will not only be visiting the
best golf courses in Australia, but also the vineyards down under. Details will be
out soon, but do register early with our S&R team if you are interested, as seats
are limited.
We have all these and more in store for you… so what are you waiting for?
See you at the Club!

Dear Friends,
I was appointed as Lady Captain since April 2006. In my third year now, I am
still facing the challenge of getting the lady members to participate in monthly
medals and club events, due mainly to the high cost of the tournaments. The
Ladies Committee had tried points system with rewards and lucky draws to
attract the members and we have seen some results. I deeply appreciate the
Ladies Committee’s efforts to engage existing members and reach out to new
members to participate in club events. Also, special thanks to the lady members
who have taken their valuable time to participate in club events.
There will be an Annual Evergreen Event on the 4th of April. This will be an
individual competition, followed by dinner and game, with attractive prizes.
The venue is at Green Banyan and I hope all ladies will join in.
SLGA league will start in March 09. We have commenced our in-house
training programme that is conducted by Heartland Golf School in February.
My sincere appreciation to the Pros in Heartland Golf School for their efforts,
and I value the dedication and hard work of my league players. The ladies
had done quite well in ’08 SLGA league. We came in 4th and 2nd in A & B
Divisions respectively. I hope we will surpass our last year’s record and keep
our JCC flag flying high.
We will hold our Jurong Charity Open in August instead of June this year due to
poor response because of the June school holidays. The new timing should also
help if there is a change of golf committee. The new committee will have more
time to organize this major event when the past committee hand over on March
31st .
We have just completed the renovation of the Ladies’ Changing Room. It is
now brighter and more spacious for the ladies to mingle and freshen-up before
and after their game. Hope all ladies will enjoy the new facilities.
Happy Golfing.

Roll Call
We welcome the following new staff to the JCC family. We are certain the
addition will enhance our services to members as we strive to be the premier
golf club in the region!
Jackson Chang, Facilities Manager
Jackson joined the Club as Facilities Manager on
12 January this year. Jackson is a certified facility
Manager and a professional member of International
Facility Management Association of USA. He comes
with 20 years in building, facilities and project
management. Jackson will be overlooking the Club’s
Building, Facilities and operational Management,
including Health/ Safety/ Environment and Quality
Management. His experience will definitely
contribute to the growth of the Club. Welcome!
First Town Hall Meeting
To encourage two-way communication between the Management and staff,
we held our first-ever Town Hall Meeting in January 2009. Staggered over four
sessions in order to accommodate the various working needs of the staff, the
sessions proved fruitful and allowed better interaction as GM Peter Goh shared
on the Club’s performance for last year and indicated the challenges facing us
in this 2009.
At the end of the insightful session, staff were given mandarin oranges to share
in the blessings of the Lunar New Year season.
Strong and Silent
A strong and resilient staff, Zaini Bin
Selamat goes about achieving his
tasks quietly, but the quality of his
work is never in question. As an S&R
Supervisor, Zaini is known as the
one totally immersed in his work and
responsibilities, which include sports
activities and social events.
His quiet contributions to the Club’s
service quality and pleasantness
was evident even to outsiders
who decide to hold their events in
the Club. During both the Tennis
Masters and Asean School Tennis
Championship last year, Zaini worked
long hours to ensure the event was
executed smoothly. His commitment
contributed significantly to the
success of the event and even drew
the attention of the organisers of the
ASEAN School Tennis Championship,
who singled him out for special
praise.
Such quality work certainly did not
go unnoticed and we are proud to
announce that Zaini Bin Selamat has
been awarded the Best Employee
Award for the Quarter Oct to Dec
2008. The strong and silent Zaini
extends his appreciation to Jurong
Country Club for honouring him with
this award.

HERON’S NEST
Boost Your Immunity
Common Name:
Scientific Name :
Spot Me @
:
I Am Good For :
Mangosteen
Garcinia Mangostana
Beside car path heading towards1st Halfway house
Commonly known as “The Queen of Fruits” in parts of
Southeast Asia, notably Singapore and Malaysia, the
Mangosteen is believed to have “cooling” properties that
counteract the “heatiness” of durians, the so-called “King of
Fruits”. The fact that the fruiting seasons of these 2 fruits
coincide makes these titles particularly apt.
Interesting Facts:
The sliced and dried pericarp (rind) of the Mangosteen when powdered can be:
1. Made into an ointment and applied on eczema and other skin disorders.
2. Used to ward off and treat infections, reduce pain or control fever and treat
various other ailments.
3. Made into a decoction to relieve diarrhea and cystitis, gonorrhea and gleet
and applied externally as an astringent lotion
In addition to its antibacterial properties, Mangosteen fruit also
demonstrates strong antifungal properties. It is highly effective in boosting
weak immune systems.
Caution!
Take Mangosteen with caution if you are diabetic, as being a fruit, it
does contain sugars and is thought to possibly inhibit the body’s natural
histamine blocking abilities.

Revealed: The New Golfers’
Changing Room for Ladies
New Irrigation
System
After several weeks of closure, the ladies’ changing room (LCR) opened on 17
Jan 2009 with an impressive new look. Since its first renovation, the changing
room was overhaul in January this year and upgraded with better amenities to
satisfy members’ growing demands.
To keep up with the increased water
demand to keep our golf course
healthy, the Club recently replaced
our old 16-year old irrigation system
with a new and more resilient system.
The new system comes equipped with
a Variable Speed Drive system, which
allow us to overcome maintenance
problems found in the old systems,
while helping the Club to save on
down times and electricity usage.
With proper pressure and water
coverage delivered throughout the
golf course, members can expect a
greener golf course.
Under the sharp eyes of Lady Captain Ju Fern and her team, the new changing
rooms now feature mordern concept, with larger sitting room and vibrant colour
to brighten up the place. Once again Bravo to Lady Captain and the team.

Kota Permai Golf &
Country Club
NEW!
In Malay, “permai” means serene and beauty. Aptly enough, Kota
Permai Golf & Country Club has captivated the golfing fraternity
with its charm since its opening in early 1998.
Boasting a stunning 18-hole championship course designed by
the ace Australian architect, Ross Watson, Kota Permai is indeed
a serene and beautiful place, despite its location in the middle
of one of the Klang Valley’s model property developments - the
award-winning Kota Kemuning township. Kota Permai Golf &
Country Club serves as a lush, green centre-piece for the township and, indeed,
the club was designed to be very much a part of local community life.
Watson’s intelligent design is challenging yet fair, with playing options for all
levels of golfers. The design and construction also reflect a desire to be ‘one’
with nature, and this is reflected in the wildlife that inhabit the waterways and
mature trees. Today, Kota Permai continues to raise the bar for the Malaysian golf
course industry as it forges ahead with unwavering commitment in its quest to
become an icon of Asian golf.
Visit www.kotapermai.com.my for more information on the club and its facilities.

Thirty-eight monthly medal best nett and gross winners in 2008 vied for this
annual champion medal which was held on Saturday, 3 January. It turned out
to be another closely contested event with a good number of players with the
chance to grab gold.
Lily Poh (21) took on the challenge
of 16 other lady medal winners and
came out on top with just a single
stroke to spare at the recent Ladies’
Gold Medal held on Saturday, 3
January. Her nett 75 was good enough
to see her win her first gold medal.
Susan Mah (12) came in second on
nett 76 beating Mill Lim (14), who
won the gold medal in 1994, into
third place.
And the one who eventually did was Chua Yeow Hua (18) who repeated his
feat of 1992. This time, he won by two strokes from Lim Swee Teck (18) who
had to settle for the runner-up nett prize. Teenager Leon See (3) took the best
gross prize for the second consecutive year with his gross 77.
The players had to play off their lowest course handicap for 2008.

Christmas Special – Lyrics It Right!
We had another wonderful turnout for our Christmas Special last year, which
was held on Sunday 21 December. Apart from the sumptuous dinner, the
participants were treated to a number of entertaining games and lots of lucky
draw prizes.
The highlight of the evening was without doubt the “Lyrics It Right” segment, ala
“Don’t Forget The Lyrics” game show in which prizes were aplenty and waiting
to be claimed by participants who actually did remember the lyrics.
Earlier on in the afternoon, sixty-four participants were battling on the golf
course for the honour of being the winners of the Golf Competition. Played on a
double Peoria stableford points format, the event was won by Tan Sun Han who
secured 36 points, just a point more than four others.
The four who finished on 35 points were Ross Tan, Peter Teo, Chai Choon Peow

Return of the Emerald Greens
Members would remember how, in the second quarter of
last year, our golf course was struck by a severe infestation of
nematodes on several greens that almost killed the course.
Playability dropped to sorely low levels, as did the golfing
traffic.
Through an intensive treatment programme, we are glad
to announce that our emerald greens have returned to
their healthy levels since August last year. With consistent
nurturing, the green speed has progressively increased from
6ft last year to 7ft now. Regular fans that refrained from
playing while the greens were recovering are now happy to
return with friends for enjoyable rounds on the course.
Using the stimpmeter and measuring the speed of the greens.
While the situation has improved now, we must stay
mindful of the fact that the golf course is a breathing
living system affected by various factors such as
weather, golf traffic, disease, age, the macro and micro
environment. Continuous TLC (tender loving care) is
showered upon the course every day by our Course
Maintenance team, who are also under constant strain
to ensure the course keeps up its healthy green.
On keeping the greens at its optimum playing level, Golf
Course Manager Cheong Ming assures members that
“we will continually strive to ensure the green speed
is maintained at the best playing levels. However, the
course is very much subject to various macro and micro
factors, which invariably affect the green speed. We
certainly hope to improve the green speed to a higher
level, and hope that members will cooperate with us
in the care of the green and observing the club’s rules,
as these are put in place to help us maintain a most
conducive environment, both for the golfer, and the green”.

HOW NEMATODES AFFECTED OUR GREENS
Turfgrass roots suffering from nematode damage have impaired ability to take up water and
nutrients from soil, thereby requiring more frequent irrigation and fertilizer applications. This may
lead to waste of precious fresh water resources, increase the risk of groundwater contamination
with nitrates and necessitate increased fungicide use by creating conditions ideal to outbreaks
of fungal diseases. Nematode affected turf is also less competitive with weeds and may require
increased herbicide use. Of even greater direct concern to turfgrass managers, the turf may
become chlorotic, wilt, thin out, and die.

Hole-In-One (Jan 2009)
After more than 14 years of golfing, Linda Mok captured her perfect shot on
Sunday 4 Jan to record the first ace in JCC for 2009.
Linda was playing a social round with members Sandra Yang, Ivy Yuen and Kim
Keow Woo when she scored her first ever hole-in-one on the 3rd hole with a 6
iron.
Linda was playing off a handicap index of 14.4.
Congratulations, Linda and may there be a few more along the way.

PRO TALK
Care For The Course – It’s Not Just
The Superintendent’s Job!
We all know that it is the job of the Golf Course Superintendent to care for
our beautiful golf course, and that he does a great job. However,
r, as
members of the club, it is very much your responsibility to do your
our
part in looking after the club as well.
The area of the golf course that always comes under the most
scrutiny is on the greens. We all know that maintaining the
greens is a delicate process that has challenges such as weather
constraints, viruses, parasites and heavy usage. With all of these
hurdles it is imperative that we as golfers do not further contribute
te
to any maintenance issues.
One of the golfer-related problems that occasionally surfaces is damage to
the edge of the hole. This usually occurs due to 3 errors:
1. Players stepping on the hole
2. Players stabbing the hole with the flag when replacing it
3. Players scraping the hole while digging the ball out with a club
Most of these issues arise out of carelessness on behalf of the golfer. The only
way to prevent this damage is to consciously ensure not to cause damage.
Some golfers try to excuse themselves from digging the ball out of the hole
with their club, claiming they have a bad back and cannot bend over to pick itt
out with their hand. For those that may have a back condition, there are a few
w
ways to avoid using your club and damaging the hole:
1. Putt out and have a playing partner retrieve your ball when they get
theirs out
2. Have your GA retrieve the ball for you (remember a little extra when tipping
ng
them at the end of the day!)
3. Purchase a rubber ball grabber that attaches to the grip of your putter
(available in your JCC Pro-Shop)
If we all do our part the golf course will be more presentable to all players
and every member and guest will have a more enjoyable day on the course.

Art for Charity
The week of 9 to 13 January saw our lobby transformed into an
art gallery for the inaugural Charity Art Exhibition featuring Ms
Christina Chen.
During the opening ceremony that was held on 9 January at the
lobby of the Fu Lin Men, we were honoured with the presence of
not only Dr Tan Cheng Bock, but also the illustrious Mr Tan Khim
Ser and former MP Dr Ho Kah Leong as Guests of Honour. During
the opening address, each Guest of Honour complimented Christina
a
for her dedication, hard work and outstanding talent while GM Mr
Peter Goh thanked Christina for her kind contribution of
two paintings of the golf course to the Club. The paintings
of our golf course now stand majestically at the entrance
to the Admin Office for all to admire.
We would like to thank all members and friends who
supported our first effort at combining art with charity,
and most importantly to Christina for her invaluable
contributions and warm heart.

Year End Swim Camp
This Swim Camp held at the Club from 17 to 20
December last year saw over 40 students join us for fourr
days of total utter fun!
Starting off with in-house games organised within the
Club’s premises, campers had the opportunity to experience
ence
team-building games with each other to strengthen theirr trust in
the team and boost their self-confidence. Aside from intensive
ensive
swimming training and incredible water games to build up
their stamina, they were also treated to new experiencess such
as inline skating and fencing. Campers even took their own
initiative to band together in movie marathons and otherr
sporting games during their free and easy times.
The third day saw the troopers visiting a Goat and Vegetable
able
Farm. Over at Qian Hu Fish Farm, our little troopers took
k the opportunity
to indulge in some longkang fishing (drain fishing), something
ething youngsters of today
y
have probably never experienced. They were also given some interactive learning
on oil production during our visit to the Sunbeam Oil Factory Learning Lab.
Even after a tiring day, our little troopers still had enough energy to splash it out
with Changi Beach Club swimmers for a “Clash of the Titans” duel back at the
Club, before ending their last night together with an enjoyable BBQ dinner.
The last day saw over 60 participants join our campers in the closing event for
the Swim Camp, which was the JCC Christmas Charity Mass Swim. We thank all
parents, families and participants for helping us raise $744.45 at this event, which
will be channelled to our JCC Charity Fund.
Our campers sure had a great time and learnt that swimming is not just an
individual sport, but that it is a team effort where everyone plays an important part.
