Message from the CEO
At Capital Regional Medical Center we believe that
above all else, we are committed to the care and
improvement of human life. In recognition of this
commitment, we will strive to improve the quality
of healthcare in the
communities we serve.
“...quality healthcare should be
accessible to our entire area.”
We also believe quality
healthcare should be
accessible and that healthcare needs should be met on
a local level. Two years ago Capital Regional Medical
Center opened the Gadsden Memorial Campus. With
the opening of the Gadsden Memorial Campus, we
brought much needed emergency
care to a community that had been
without.
The Gadsden Memorial Campus
offers 24/7 emergency room
services, including a full suite of
radiology and laboratory services.
Recently, a helipad was added
that accommodates emergency
helicopters. To-date the Gadsden ER
has served more than 33,000 patients.
Capital Regional is committed to the
care of the children of the Big Bend
region. In 2011, the hospital provided emergency care
to more than 70,000 patients, approximately 12,000 of
them children, with an average wait time of 25 minutes
to see a physician.
In August 2011, Capital Regional Medical Center
expanded its services with the opening of the Pediatric
Emergency Room, the only facility of its kind in the
Big Bend. With highly-trained pediatric professionals
and a child-focused, soothing atmosphere, the facility
provides quality care and lessens anxiety for children
and parents. With the opening of the Pediatric ER, a
pediatric in-patient unit was also added.
Also, in August 2011 Capital Regional announced that
it will build an 8th floor onto its facility. The expansion
will allow the hospital to add more than 40 private beds
to the hospital’s capacity and is also expected to bring
more than 100 new healthcare jobs to the area. The
expansion represents our dedication to serving the Big
Bend region by offering an even greater capacity to care
for its citizens. The new floor is scheduled
to be open and ready to serve patients in
2013.
In 2011, Capital Regional Medical
Center’s colleagues and physicians
continued the path of improving the
quality of patient care we provide our
community. New quality measures
reported by the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services show
Capital Regional ranks as well or better
than the average U.S. hospital on
process measures and outcome of care
measures. Capital Regional uses these
measures to consistently improve the care provided to
patients.
We look forward to continuing to serve you and invite
you to visit our facility and learn more about our
services. Thank you for choosing Capital Regional
Medical Center.
Sincerely,
Brian T. Cook, FACHE

Community Impact
American Heart Association Events & HeartWalk
Capital Regional is dedicated to making a difference
in the community. Every day members of our
staff provide not only monetary contributions, but
volunteer their time and talents. Last year colleagues
participated in bake sales, raffles and chili-cook offs
to raise money for the American Heart Association
HeartWalk. In 2011, more than $20,000 was raised
and donated for the cause.

Commitment to Excellence
Capital Regional is focused on the importance of preventative care. Routine physician visits are more important than
people might think. Going to the doctor; whether it is a primary care physician, a gynecologist or the dentist can
mean the difference between staying healthy and possibly developing a serious medical problem. Part of living a long
and healthy life includes making routine visits to the doctor.
Mammograms
Capital Regional Medical Center offers a wide variety
of women’s services including mammography, bone
densitometry and stereotactic breast biopsy. The
mammography suites at Capital Regional Medical Center
are state-of-the-art and used solely for this procedure.
The Mammography Suite has been in operation
since 1988, is accredited by the American College of
Radiology and certified as a Medicare Mammography
Screening Facility.
Our staff consists of registered technologists who
are specially trained and certified in performing
mammography and will conduct the procedure
safely and efficiently. The interpreting physicians are
radiologists who are certified by the American Board of
Radiology. They will review your study and compare it to
any previous mammograms available. These physicians
have special interest and training in mammography.
AngioScreen
AngioScreen™ is a service provided by Capital Regional.
This non-invasive vascular screening is designed to
assess risk of heart attack and stroke. The screening
takes approximately 15 minutes and there are clear
results of any vascular condition that are immediately
available following the procedure.
Reasons to AngioScreen™
• Every 30 seconds an American has a heart attack
• Every 45 seconds an American has a stroke
• Every hour there are 100 deaths from vascular disease
Page 4
Vascular disease is the leading cause of death in
America as well as the leading cause of heart disease
and stroke. Being aware of vascular health is the first
step in preventing these problems. The results of
AngioScreen™ will provide information on the condition
of the heart and an assessment of risk that can be
discussed with a personal physician. At the screening,
blood pressure is taken along with an ultrasound picture
of the carotid arteries. In addition, information is gathered
about heart rhythm and overall fitness.
Ultra Sound
An ultra sound scan shows the flow of blood in the neck
arteries that go to the front of the brain. Narrowing of
these carotid arteries by plaque within the wall of the
blood vessel increases the risk of stroke.
ABI (Ankle Brachial Index)
ABI is a screening test for blockages in the arteries that
go to the legs. This type of blockage is called Peripheral
Artery Disease (PAD). Ten million people have PAD, and
90% do not know they have it. A person with PAD is two
to four times more likely to have a heart attack compared
to the general population.
Angioscreen Results
Following the screening, a report is available with
approximate data and a colored photo of the arteries.
There is also a CD containing results than can be shared
with a physician.
Volunteer Spot Light
Margaret Timm
Volunteers are special people who bring kindness
and caring to patients, family members and staff at
Capital Regional Medical Center, brightening lives
and touching hearts. During 2011, our volunteers
gave more than 17,000 hours of service. On a daily
basis, they are present throughout the hospital
greeting patients and family members, operating the
gift shop and working within the many departments
where they keep family members informed of the
status of surgical patients and much, much more.
One such volunteer is Margaret Timm, who
was Volunteer of the Year in 2011. Margaret has
contributed more than 1,200 hours of service since
she began volunteering at the hospital in 2009.
Margaret works Wednesday afternoons in the gift
shop and Friday mornings in Same Day Surgery
and wherever she is, her warm smile and friendly
attitude brighten the days of patients, family
members and staff alike.
“Margaret is so personable and
friendly,” says Volunteer Services
Manager Nancy Spears. “She’s always
jumping in to substitute. She is here
two days a week, and any time we
have a need some place, she is the
first one to say ‘I can do that!’ She is
just a pleasure to volunteer with.”
“In the gift shop, I mainly work at the register,”
Margaret explains. But her work involves much more than just ringing up
sales. “Sometimes I am lending an ear to people who want to talk about
a family member that is sick,” she says. “I just listen and hopefully cheer
them up a little if possible.”
In Same Day Surgery, Margaret is always on the move whether it’s
chatting with family members, putting away the supplies, bringing a
patient something to eat or drink or offering up a blanket or newspaper.
“In Same Day Surgery, the goal is to be there for patients and their
families, but we also assist nurses when needed.”
“The hospital is not most people’s favorite place to be, even if they are only here for a test,” she says,
“but most people have an extremely positive experience here and it’s nice to know that I am just a
tiny part of it.”
Capital Regional Medical Center is grateful for the tireless support of our volunteers and we thank
them for giving of their time and talent.
Page 5
Quality & Patient Safety
Capital Regional Medical Center recognizes the importance of patient safety and continues to make it paramount.
Our initiatives ensure the safety and quality of care given to our patients each day.
AirStrip OB™
AirStrip OB delivers vital patient waveform data —
including fetal heartbeat and maternal contraction
patterns — directly from the labor and delivery unit
to a medical professional’s mobile wireless device,
similar to how they appear on a hospital-based
monitor. Physicians can closely monitor patients
24/7 when the demands of their day necessitate
their periodic absence from the Labor and Delivery
Unit. Built on the latest mobility platforms, the AirStrip
service is FDA-cleared on virtually all mobile devices
Page 6
and HIPAA compliant with a single-user sign-on
component.
AirStrip OB incorporates robust security measures
to ensure confidential patient data is fully protected.
In today’s healthcare environment, improving patient
safety and reducing risk are of paramount concern.
The Joint Commission has identified ineffective
communication as one of the leading causes of
medical errors leading to patient injury. In bringing the
right data to the right doctor at the right time, AirStrip
OB helps us deliver excellent patient care.
LifeNet
InterMedHx (RxHx)
LifeNet allows clinicians anytime/anywhere access to live
and historical electrocardiography (ECG) data. It delivers
a 20-fold improvement in ECG visual display over
traditional paper tracings and PDFs, enabling clinicians
to make faster, more informed diagnosis and treatment
decisions for their cardiac patients. The ECG is among
the most vital tools that clinicians use to diagnose a
heart attack, and the use of LifeNet can shave precious
minutes off the process of diagnosis and treatment
decision-making. When treating cardiac patients, those
extra minutes can help patients recover more quickly
while preventing heart damage.
Providers are routinely tasked with obtaining a list of a
patient’s current home medications – a valuable part
in the diagnosis and treatment of their patients. RxHx
is designed to function as step one in this process by
querying participating source medication databases,
including pharmacies, payers and pharmacy benefit
managers. RxHx extracts available medication data, such
as drug names, dosage, route, and frequency, and prints
a personalized medication report - all within minutes
of the initial registration. The attending practitioner can
then easily review the report with the patient to verify the
content and check for any over the counter medications,
physician samples, and health supplements taken. With
today’s growing nursing and pharmacist shortages,
RxHx can enable a provider to reallocate valuable
professional time to other tasks and functions which, in
turn, can further reduce medical errors.
With regard to its use in the Emergency Department
setting, LifeNet allows for unprecedented collaboration
between EMS, Emergency Department, and cardiology
teams – especially when transporting potential acute
myocardial infarction (AMI) and segment elevation
myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. LifeNet receives
information wirelessly from EMS transport, which the
physician can then access. The ECGs are displayed
with the highest possible resolution – no more faxes,
emails or PDFs. The physician can then communicate
immediately with EMS to provide the clinical assistance
needed to properly care for the patient while en route.
The ED and/or cath lab can also prepare for the arrival of
the patient and facilitate the most appropriate and timely
intervention.
Severe Sepsis Program
Severe sepsis is the most common cause of death in the
ICU nationally. Healthcare costs to care for patients with
severe sepsis are nearly twice as high as those for other
patients, and mortality rates are much higher as well. The
Sepsis Program targets early recognition that promotes
an evidenced-based focus on an entire group that
includes rapid and aggressive treatments, all monitored
through an interdisciplinary approach led by a sepsis
coordinator.

Gadsden ER Update
Capital Regional Medical Center is committed to the
care of everyone in our region and we believe that
healthcare needs should be met on a community level.
In June 2010, Capital Regional opened the Gadsden
Memorial Campus, a full-service 24-hour emergency
room that offers state-of-the-art technology and a full
suite of laboratory and radiology services.
“Before the Gadsden Memorial Campus opened,
EMS personnel had to take patients to Tallahassee for
treatment,” said Brian Cook, president and CEO of
Page 8
Capital Regional Medical Center. “Not only was this
very dangerous for those experiencing life-threatening
emergencies, it was also expensive. We are proud to
continue to offer a full-service emergency facility in
community that can address patient needs without a
30-minute drive.”
By bringing emergency care closer to home, the
Gadsden Memorial Campus has reduced the Gadsden
County EMS 911 emergency transports to Tallahassee.
In just two years, the Gadsden Memorial Campus has
served more than 33,000 patients.

Pediatric ER & In-Patient Unit
The team at Capital Regional Medical Center believes
when it comes to an emergency, the best story is a
short story. That’s why the hospital has long been
known for boasting the shortest emergency room
wait times in the area. In 2011, the hospital provided
emergency care to more than 80,000 patients,
approximately 12,000 of them children, with an average
wait time of 25 minutes to see a physician.
In August 2011, Capital Regional Medical Center
opened their Pediatric Emergency Room (ER), the only
facility of its kind in the Big Bend. The Pediatric ER
was created with a child-friendly atmosphere to soothe
anxiety and help children feel more comfortable.
Instead of being treated alongside adults with varying
injuries, the Pediatric ER is for kids only. With a childfocused, soothing atmosphere, the facility lessens
anxiety for children and parents will be comforted
knowing that their kids are being treated by the area’s
best pediatric professionals.
With the opening of the
Pediatric ER, Capital
Regional Medical
Center also added to
its capabilities a new

Capital Regional Medical Center is dedicated to
providing the highest quality care to our community.
The Pediatric ER and Inpatient Unit allow us to continue
to offer the best care for the Big Bend’s youngest
patients in an innovative way that provides the greatest
comfort for parent and child.
eBroselow-Luten System
Providing children with the appropriate dose of
medication is complicated. It requires complex
calculations to determine the correct amount needed,
based on the illness and the child’s weight and can
be a challenging process. Capital Regional Medical
Center has implemented the use of a revolutionary
pediatric medication dosing tool that will greatly benefit
the more than 12,000 pediatric patients we serve each
year. eBroselowLuten is a web-based program that

The Family Center – Where Families Are Born
It’s not enough for a hospital to deliver babies. Childbirth
also means delivering a new mom into the world – a
person who is confident in her ability to care for a
newborn infant.
That’s why The Family Center of Capital Regional
Medical Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive,
family-centered maternity care. Through classes and
information for parents-to-be and siblings, our caring
staff helps prepare families for the changes ahead.
Advanced technology and medical skill assure optimal
care for both mother and newborn during their hospital
stay. Capital Regional’s Family Center offers Prepared
Childbirth and Breastfeeding classes, which are taught
by certified professionals and offer support and guidance
for new mothers and families.

Bariatric Center
Capital Regional is committed to the health and
well-being of the Tallahassee community. Free
weight loss surgery seminars are offered by clinical
weight loss experts on a monthly basis. Unlike
traditional gastric by-pass surgery, LAP-BAND®
– more commonly known as “banding,” utilizes
minimally invasive surgical techniques to place a
state-of-the-art banding device around the stomach
that can be adjusted to fit your lifestyle while helping
you achieve better health. While there are other
devices for banding available, Capital Regional
utilizes the LAP-BAND® product exclusively. LAPBAND® is the original FDA approved adjustable
gastric banding device.
How does it work? Without requiring stomach
cutting or stapling, the LAP-BAND® system reduces
your stomach capacity, restricting the amount of
food you can eat at one time, and allows you to feel
full quicker and longer while needing to eat less.
Why Lap Band? LAP-BAND® has a proven track
record of results that include long-term weight loss
and better health when all other diets have failed.

Capital Regional is continually dedicated to providing
quality healthcare in our area. We have made a
commitment to accreditation and to positive patient
outcomes through evidence-based care.
The Joint Commission recognized Capital Regional
based on data reported about evidence-based clinical
processes that are shown to improve care for certain
conditions. To be recognized as a top performer on
key quality measures an organization must meet two
95 percent performance thresholds. Capital Regional
achieved this status on three conditions: heart attack,
heart failure, and pneumonia. Capital Regional is also
an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of
Chest Pain Centers. Scores on HospitalCompare.HHS.
gov, show Capital Regional ranks as well or better than
the average U.S. hospital on process measures and
outcome of care measures.
Capital Regional Medical Center has joined
HeartCaring®, a network of hospitals committed to
practicing gender-specific medicine and reducing the
rate of cardiovascular disease. This national program
is powered by Spirit Health Group® and activated by
U.S. hospitals that ascribe to the highest standards of
excellence in women’s health, education and community
outreach. This program brings primary care physicians
