CALL FOR PAPERS
The First International Conference on Visayan Art and Culture draws on the deep wellspring of artmaking and cultural practices within and
among Visayan individuals and communities to clear the space for enunciating and advocating the scholarly research and criticism of artworks,
art practices, cultural norms and conventions, and cultural institutions and their publics across the Visayas. Issues such as artistic production,
state and market patronage, cultural pedagogy, institutional policies, modernity and postmodernism, migration and diaspora, postcolonialism,
internalionalization and globalization, and the economy of art and culture are explored within the frames of art history, art theory and criticism,
cultural history, performance studies, music history, museum studies, cultural management, interdisciplinary studies, cultural anthropology,
cultural studies, art education, and governance in the arts and culture. Exploring the various terrains and possibilities of “being Visayan”, the
theme Padulngan (Visayan for “coordinates” or “headings”) focuses on the various perspectives of research, fieldwork, and critical studies in the
state and various directions of Visayan Art and Culture today, and its possible trajectories in the future. The Conference focuses on the following
panel areas for discussion:
Visayan Art History
Narrations on Visayan art and culture; research on various artistic practices throughout the history of the Visayas; reviews on the
literature and practice of art historical or cultural historical documentation and research; delves on the textuality of Visayan art and history;
searches and investigations on the origins and directions of Visayan art and culture; discussions on current fieldwork concerns,
historiographies,and methodologies in studying Visayan art and culture.
Museums and Art Institutions in the Visayas
Investigations on the narratives of self-hood among various localities, communities, and aggrupations across the Visayas, and among
Visayan publics; provides vignettes of local patterns of artistic display and consumption; views perspectives of state/market forces in the
constitution of art and museum collections; outlines consequent narratives of place-ness and agency among various Visayan art publics.
Visayas Art Movements/ Schools/ Styles
Investigates the rise of various Visayas-based aesthetic movements as a consequence of the various historical and social forces that
shaped Philippine/Southeast Asian art; looks at the histories and advocacies of various Visayan art groups and organizations; looks at
manifestations of style and cultural identity among varous Visayan art coteries, alliances, artist collectives, networks and individuals within the
frame of aesthetics and art theory, history, and interdisciplinary studies.
Appropriating the Folk
Utilizations and appropriations of various traditional cultural practices and materials as part of the aesthetic articulation of various
Visayan artistic and cultural identities
Art Markets, Creative Industries and Patronage
Discussions, insights, and research done on the impact of developing art markets, contemporary creative industries resulting from
modernization, and patronage in both traditional and contemporary cultural products and services within and among Visayan art and cultural
publics.
Pedagogy
Discussions and investigations on the state of education in the arts and culture in the Visayas, methodologies and strategies for art
education, and cultural training and employment and empowerment opportunities among members of the various Visayan cultural
communities.
Cross-Disciplinal studies on Visayan Arts and Culture
Interdisciplinary investigations on the nature of Visayan art and culture from the areas of philosophy and theology, economics, business
management, public administration and governance, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and other fields.
Independent Panel Proposals are welcomed. Kindly state the theme and a maximum 50-word description of the constituted panel. A
minimum of 3 papers must constitute a single panel.
Abstracts should contain the following:
 Full Title of the Paper
 Name of Author/Authors with titles (i.e. MFA, PhD)
 Maximum 250-word abstract proposal/description of the paper
 List of a maximum of 5 keywords used by the paper (i.e. art history, music history, cultural studies, etc.)
 Maximum 100-word author’s bionote containing personal history, institutional affiliations, and current directions of
scholarship and/or advocacy
