Selling Yearbook Ads
Please dress professionally when selling ads . . . nice pants and a nice shirt
is preferred. You want to portray yourself as a business professional.
Sample Script for Ad Sales
Hello. My name is _______ ___________ and I am a member of the Pittsfield High School yearbook staff.
Could I please speak to the person in charge of advertising?
(speaking with person in charge of advertising). Hello. My name is _______ ___________ and I am a member
of the Pittsfield High School yearbook staff. (If applicable say . . .) We appreciate your past support and would
like to ask you to once again place an ad in our yearbook. In addition to the typical ads, we have an option that
I would like to explain to you. Being a Page Sponsor will place your company’s name at the bottom of a regular
yearbook page where students are more likely to look, rather than in the advertising section. The cost is $30.
If Page Sponsor is not for you, then I would like to offer the opportunity for you to add a photo of a PHS student
to your ad. This would bring the reader’s attention to your ad. Maybe you have a PHS student who works for
you or we could take a photo of a PHS student who is shopping at your business (Show Pike Press ad). Ads that
can accommodate a picture include the 1/8 page which is $55, 1/4 page for $100 and 1/2 page for $175.
Here is a copy of the ad that you purchased last year (use your yearbook -- not the sample on the back of the sheet).
What type of ad would you like to purchase? (If they say no, then . . .) We also have a 1/16 page ad without a
photo for $35 or a one-line Patron ad for $20. Would one of these work for you?
(If Yes) Thank you so much. Could you please complete the top section of my Ad Order Form. Thank you. I
have marked that you would like a _______ ad at a cost of $____. What would you like on your ad? . . . (get all
information and something with their logo if they’re using one). To keep down our costs, would it be possible for
you to pay me now or is there a time that I could return to pick up a check? (if they need a bill sent, that’s OK but
not preferred) Thank you so much for supporting our high school and the PHS Yearbook staff. We will send a
proof of your ad for approval. Here is my business card where I can be reached.
(If No) I understand. Thank you very much for your time.
Incentives and Requirements
You must sell a minimum of 10 ads by September 16. That gives you more than 4 weeks! If a business declines
to buy an ad, be sure to return that form to the advertising manager and pick up a replacement. Failure to sell 10
ads will result in a 0 for the assignment making it difficult for your quarter grade to be anything better than a C.
It’s all or nothing. Without ads the Yearbook could not exist!
If a business that was not previously a Page Sponsor chooses to purchase this type of ad, it will count as two
ads for you. Also, any eighth-page ad or larger ad may include a photo. If the business will place a candid PHS
student photo (or allow us to) on the ad, it will also count double (no team photos). If any individual sells more
than ten, extra credit will be awarded or you may give it to someone else for credit.
