NNS Updates Its
Smoking Policy
In a letter sent to employees earlier today,
Newport News Shipbuilding announced that
it will update its smoking policy to maintain
a safe and healthy work environment for all
employees, customers and suppliers, and to
encourage employees toward safe and healthy
living.
The updated policy (SSO # 02-212) states that
all smoking forms of tobacco such as cigarettes,
cigars, electronic cigarettes and vapor pipes will
only be allowed in designated areas. Smoking
will not be permitted outside of these areas,
including walkways, inside buildings, or in any
on-site vehicle.
“The goal is to make these areas consistent so
that they are easily identifiable by all employees
and to keep smoking activities away from areas
where flammable and combustible materials
are stored,” Bill Bell, vice president of Human
Reources and Administration wrote in the
letter. “With a company as large as ours, change
isn’t something that happens overnight. While
many designated smoking areas are already
established, additional areas will be created
to address local needs on an individual basis.
Our goal is to educate employees, customers
and suppliers on the new requirements and to
have all areas rolled out by the end of the first
quarter 2016.”
Bell also said that the company believes the
policy change is a step in the right direction
to making the workplace a safer and healthier
environment for all employees – and a step
closer to a smoke-free campus.
Read the letter sent to all NNS employees or
visit the Safety website to review the FAQs,
map of the designated smoking areas or for
information about smoking cessation resources.
On Feb. 4, HII announced that SN3 will
participate in the 8(a) Business Development
Mentor-Protégé Program. SN3 will work
collaboratively with Synergy Solutions, Inc. to
provide general and technical business knowledge
while building a mutually beneficial business
relationship for future government contracts.
The U.S. Small Business Administration
designed the Mentor-Protégé Program to enable
successful firms to provide various forms of
business development assistance to 8(a) Business
Development Program participants. The SBA
approved the companies’ participation in the
program.
“SN3 welcomes the opportunity to mentor our
trusted partner Synergy,” said Gerald Boyd,
SN3’s vice president of business development.
“This relationship will allow us to assist them in
further developing their core business.”
Synergy is an SBA-certified 8(a) and economically
disadvantaged, woman-owned small business
based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The company
provides a full spectrum of administrative and
professional support services for nuclear facility
operations, as well as security, environmental,
health and safety services.
“We are honored to work with SN3 and to have
been approved by the SBA for participation in
this valuable program,” said Synergy President
Gigi Nelson. “This is a win for our current and
future clients. The knowledge and expertise we
will receive from SN3 will help us expand and
advance our capabilities.”

ERGs Host “Go Red for Women” Event
On Feb. 4, the NNS Employee Resource Groups jointly sponsored a “Go Red for Women” event to
bring awareness to women’s heart health. Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) Board Member,
Britta Brown Zambrana opened the event by talking about the effects of heart attack and stroke
on women. She encouraged everyone to become aware and get involved.
“I want to encourage everyone here today,” Zambrana said. “There is a leadership role waiting for
men and women like you to jump on; leading the charge to end this deadly foe once and for all.”
The event also featured guest speakers Ethlyn Gibson, nursing administrator and Riverside’s
Program All-inclusive Care for Elders (PACE), Jessica Larch, News Channel 3, Gabrielle Willis,
Interactive Health, Dr. Naumann, QuadMed, and Marques Fitch, American Heart Association
director of Community and Multi-Cultural Health. The speakers discussed topics such as the
warning signs of heart attack and stroke for women, nutrition tips, losing weight and making a
choice to change, what the new Health Center will offer and the American Heart Association’s
2016 Heart Walk. Bharat Amin, vice president and chief information officer (CIO), and Carolyn
Pittman, vice president and controller, closed the event with final remarks.

Amin said, “I have a personal goal this year to promote health and fitness in my division, and with
your help, I would like to spread the enthusiasm throughout the entire shipyard.”

Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarine
Programs and Fleet Support, presented an
On-The-Spot Ethics Award to Project Manager
Steve DeBusk (O93) on Feb. 3. A few months
ago, DeBusk and his wife stopped at the scene of
a serious accident and provided assistance and
comfort to the victims until medical help arrived.
Before incorporateing the work of another author in your presentation, paper etc. check to ensure
that it is covered by HII’s license from the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), which allows HII
to use or copy many published works with permission. As an “Annual License Holder” of the CCC
license, HII is granted the right to use a large universe of published material. Any HII employee can
easily determine which works are subject to the annual license by accessing the CCC’s website at
www.copyright.com.
“When we saw this accident, it brought back
the memory of our daughter’s car accident,”
said DeBusk, who’s daughter was injured in an
accident nearly five years ago. “Several good
Samaritans stopped to help my daughter and
because of them she was able to survive the
accident. Stopping to help the victims was our
way of paying back and we are grateful for the
opportunity to help.”
