9 | 22 | 2014 A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding Warner Launched into James River Newport News Shipbuilding launched John Warner (SSN 785) into the James River Sept. 10. “The John Warner team has made tremendous progress over the last year,” said Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet Support. “To see the submarine afloat in the James River just days after the christening is testament to the dedication and hard work of both the shipbuilders here at Newport News, as well those at our partner yard, Electric Boat.” Model of Excellence Award Winners Honored During Evening Ceremony. ...SEE PG 2 Once floating, the approximately 7,800-ton submarine was moved with the help of three tugboats to the shipyard’s submarine pier, where final outfitting, testing and crew certification will take place over the next six months. “Having the submarine in the water allows us to test the remaining systems and improves the fidelity of the training that we are doing in preparation for crew certification,” said Cmdr. Dan Caldwell, the submarine’s prospective Walkers Needed for Peninsula and Southside Heart Walks. ...SEE PG 2 commanding officer. “The ship’s launching is an important milestone that puts us one step closer to our ultimate goal of taking this ship out to sea.” View a time-lapse video of the Warner launch at nns.huntingtoningalls.com/videos. The awards are presented annually to individuals or teams for extraordinary performance that is aligned with Newport News’ strategic values, direction and operational strategy. NNS President Matt Mulherin spoke to the MOE winners about the importance of their accomplishments during a ceremony held at Newport News Marriott at City Center. “You thought out of the box, you listened to new ideas, and you came up with innovative solutions to difficult challenges,” he said. “You weren’t afraid to try something new, and when things got tough, you got tougher. The work you have accomplished is a shining example of what it means to not only strive for excellence, but to surpass it.” Visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/videos to view this year’s MOE video. Shipbuilders Take Part in CPR Training On Sept. 18, Newport News Shipbuilding division partnered with the American Heart Association to teach shipbuilders how to perform hands-only CPR during a demonstration. The American Heart Association provided the shipyard a mobile CPR unit for on-site instruction and take-home kits to promote hands-on practice with family and friends. Foreman Samuel Robinson participated in the event. “This was my first time being trained in CPR,” he said. “I’m glad I was able to attend and I’m happy the shipyard made this event possible for shipbuilders. Without this opportunity, I probably wouldn’t have pushed myself to learn CPR. Now I know how to respond if I’m ever put in a situation where someone needs CPR to save their life.” Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for more information.
