Press Release
USDOT (US Department of Transportation) announces 7layers as
partner for Connected Vehicle Program
7layers is selected to develop the Connected Vehicle Next Stage Certification Environment
to include
 Device Requirements
 Test Specifications
 Test Equipment & Suites
 Test & Certification Services
Technology providers, manufacturers and application developers will have the ecosystem
available to validate Connected Vehicle solutions thereby ensuring compliance,
performance and interoperability.
In order to achieve this, the US Department of Transport (USDOT) aims to accelerate the
deployment and adoption of connected vehicle systems, and seeks to harmonize the
underlying standards which are required in order to achieve reliable and interoperable
connected vehicles and ITS services.
For this reason, the US Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Intelligent Transportation
Systems Joint Program Office (ITS-JPO) and the Certification Steering Committee have
announced they will work together to set up and deliver the next generation of certification
services in support of the Connected Vehicle Program.
Routes to Connected Vehicle
Connected vehicle safety applications
…would enable vehicles to have 360-degree awareness to inform a vehicle operator of
hazards and situations they can’t see. These safety applications have the potential to
reduce crashes through advisories and warnings. For instance, vehicle operators may be
advised of a school zone, sharp ramp curve, or slippery patch of roadway ahead and may
be warned in more imminent crash situations, such as during merging operations or if the
vehicle ahead stops suddenly. Vehicles can also be warned of bicycles and pedestrians
through connected vehicle technology, enhancing the safety of these travel modes.
Connected vehicle mobility applications
…are intended to provide a connected, data-rich travel environment based on information
transmitted anonymously from thousands of vehicles that are using the transportation
system at a particular time. This information could help transportation managers monitor and
manage transportation system performance – for example, by adjusting traffic signals,
transit operations, or dispatching maintenance crews or emergency services. This
information could also help transportation agencies and fleet operators to manage crews
and use resources as efficiently as possible.
2
Environmental Issues
Providing travelers with real-time information about traffic congestion and other travel
conditions helps them make more informed decisions that can reduce the environmental
impact of their trip. Informed travelers may decide to avoid congestion by taking alternate
routes or public transit, or by rescheduling their trip — all of which can make their trip more
fuel-efficient and eco-friendly. The ability for vehicles to “talk to” the infrastructure could
provide information to the vehicle operator so that he/she can drive through a traffic signal
network at optimum speeds to reduce stopping.
Destinations of Connected Vehicle
Safety
In 2009, there were 5.5 million crashes, resulting in 33,808 fatalities and 2.2 million injuries.
Our children and young people are particularly vulnerable. Motor vehicle crashes are the
leading cause of death for ages 3 through 34. Connected vehicle technologies provide the
tools to make transformational improvements in safety – to significantly reduce the number
of lives lost each year through connected vehicle crash prevention applications.
Mobility
U.S. highway users waste 4.8 billion hours a year stuck in traffic – nearly one full work week
(or vacation week) for every traveler. The overall cost (based on wasted fuel and lost
productivity) reached $115 billion in 2009 – more than $808 for every U.S. traveler. Delays
in Truck operations alone result in $33 billion. Connected vehicle mobility applications will
enable system users and system operators to make choices that reduce travel delay.
Environment
The total amount of wasted fuel topped 3.9 billion gallons in 2009 according to the Texas
Transportation Institute – 130 days of flow in the Alaska Pipeline (nearly a third of the year).
Connected vehicle environmental applications will enable system users and system
operators to make choices that reduce the environmental impacts of surface transportation
travel.

FIME and 7layers Simplify NFC Certification
~ NFC handset manufacturers can draw on combined telecom and NFC transactions
expertise ~
26 March 2015 – 7layers and FIME today announce the signing of a partnership and the
launch of a comprehensive testing and certification offering for the near field communication
(NFC) enabled handset market. The collaboration provides consultancy, test tools,
certification and laboratory services. It covers the full range of standards that devices must
comply with before secure NFC services like mobile payments can be deployed.
7layers offers expertise, test systems, as well as test and certification services, for a large
variety of wireless specifications including schemes such as GCF, PTCRB, Bluetooth® etc.;
while FIME covers GCF, GSMA, GlobalPlatform, EMVCo and the global payment schemes.
“Collaboration is the key to the success of any technology,” comments Stephanie El Rhomri,
NFC & Payment Business Line Manager at FIME. “By working together with 7layers, we can
test any NFC mobile handset to any of the required specifications; a proposition that is
unique in the market. With two out of every three smartphones set to feature NFC by 2018*,
the ability to confirm that they work as intended, interoperate with the market and are
compliant is essential. FIME has worked with NFC and payments for many years, and is
delighted to combine our expertise with the 7layers experience to support the launch of any
NFC handset globally.”
Thomas Jaeger, Director of Global Business Development at 7layers, adds:“With 85% of all
global payment transactions still based on cash or check, digital payment has the potential
to become a growing trend. The 7layers group is proud of working closely together with
FIME, a global leader in digital payment service assessments. 7layers achieved leadership
in cellular device certification and adding Smart Services test and certification capabilities fit
perfectly to our global strategy.”
It is mandatory for NFC devices to be compliant to the GSMA NFC Handset Test Book PRD
TS27, as referenced by Global Certification Forum (GCF). Additionally, for the launch of
mobile contactless payment services, devices need to be validated against a range of
payment specifications.
For further information on how this partnership can benefit your device and payment
services approval process, please contact FIME and 7layers. Both companies also offer test
tools that cover both network dependent and network independent NFC test requirements
for device and services pre-certification and certification purposes.

New OTA Reverb Chamber at 7layers
~ ETS-Lindgren AMS-7200 OTA Reverb Test System for Wireless OTA Measurements
constructed at 7layers ~
Texas, USA, 27 March 2015 - 7layers and ETS-Lindgren are proud to announce they have
completed installation of an ETS-Lindgren Model AMS-7200 Over-the-Air (OTA) Reverb
Test System at 7layers’ laboratory in Sunnyvale, California. Reverberation chambers
provide faster total radiated power (TRP) and total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) measurements
of devices under test than industry standard anechoic chambers. This test chamber can be
used for faster and more economical research and development testing services. In
addition, testing in a reverberation chamber is well suited for wearable and large form factor
devices because of the multipath signalling environment.
Wearable devices’ connectivity can be positively or negatively affected by the wearer. The
AMS-7200 OTA Reverb Test System is able to create a multipath environment to show
antenna performance by simulating the effects of radio waves being diffracted or deflected
from a body phantom representing human muscle tissue. 7layers expects testing with this
chamber to be a popular solution for the wearable manufacturers during the product
development cycle. In addition to body phantoms, live human tests can be conducted inside
the reverberation chamber to provide testing for the effects of different grip styles, body
types and movement on device connectivity.
The AMS-7200 OTA Reverb Test System can be used for certification testing of large form
factor devices. Reverberation chambers, because of the inherent multipath environment,
overcome the requirements of a large quiet zone for testing in anechoic chambers.
Reverberation chambers don’t have quiet zone requirements and if a device can be placed
in the chamber, it can be tested. New product categories such as wireless appliances, teller
machines, and automotive devices sometimes require a larger quiet zone and necessitate
either an oversized anechoic chamber or a reverberation chamber to test to the certification
requirements.
With the installation of the new reverberation chamber, 7layers can now offer swift and
economical OTA testing services to manufacturers. This testing can be used while
developing devices to achieve better performance and a superior user experience in the end
product. With the expansion of wireless technology into new markets, new solutions for
testing need to come along with it. ETS-Lindgren and 7layers are pleased to provide this
new type of testing service for emerging device markets.

Field Trial testing at 7layers covers new LTE TDD requirements
Field Trial testing is part of the GCF Certification scheme. By requiring tests on live networks
in addition to conformance tests in a GCF Recognized Test Organization (GCF RTO) such
as 7layers, manufacturers obtain practical insight into their device’s interoperability.
For each feature being tested, field trials are performed on a specified number of
infrastructure combinations on live networks. Leading GCF operators are making their
networks available for field trials, providing the relevant network information and appropriate
drive routes to enable field trial test organizations to perform the required tests correctly and
efficiently. The GCF Field Trial Agreement Group (GCF FTAG), chaired by Michael
Ciplajevs of 7layers, meets at regular intervals to further develop and maintain criteria for
Field Trial test scenarios.
LTE TDD Field Trial in China Mobile Network
During the GCF Field Trial Agreement Group Meeting held in Dubai it has been established
that terminals supporting LTE-TDD and/or LTE-FDD have to pass at least one LTE TDD
field trial configuration. CMCC (China Mobile) is the only GCF Field Trial Qualified Operator
(FTQO) worldwide that covers LTE TDD Band 38, 39, 40 and 41.
The Field Trial drive routes are located in Jiaxing and Hangzhou.
7layers, one of world’s most experienced, international GCF Recognized Test
Organizations, offers GCF Conformance and GCF Field Trial Testing on a global scale.

Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services UK Gains Accreditation for
Candle Testing
Warrington, 7th May 2015 – Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services UK, whose
testing laboratory is located in Warrington, Cheshire, is pleased to announce it has been
accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to test for the compliance
and safety of candles.
As candles have grown in popularity with consumers over the past decade, so has the
potential safety concern with their use. It is said that consumers are purchasing candles
more frequently now as focal points for their home décor, as a means of scenting the air in a
room, for aromatherapy-like relaxation, stress reduction or for parties and celebrations. In
this environment, and whilst candles remain one of the main sources of house fires, testing
has become increasingly important to retailers, importers and manufacturers, to minimise
risk and ensure that the quality and performance of their candles meet the expectations of
today’s consumer.
A trio of European standards has been published in November 2007 to enhance and define
the safety performance of candles and to provide a formal means of demonstrating their
safety and advising consumers of the hazards inherent with such products: EN 15426:2007
“Candles – Specification for Sooting Behaviour”, EN 15493:2007 “Candles – Specification
for Fire Safety” and EN 15493:2007 “Candles – Specification for Fire Safety”. Bureau
Veritas’ UK laboratory now has the capability to test candles to European safety standard.

Bureau Veritas Launches 3D Printing Supply Chain Solution
~ Comprehensive solution focused around performance, compliance & trust ~
May 14, 2015, Hong Kong – With the recent explosion in 3D printing, Bureau Veritas has launched a suite of
services to support the supply chain from raw material supplier to 3D printer manufacturers. The use of 3D printers is
becoming increasingly varied; current uses include medical devices, food, fashion accessories, automotive parts,
homeware design, building construction as well as customized toys that scan facial features and print personalized
characters. However, with new technology come challenges, especially around performance, compliance and trust.
This is exactly where Bureau Veritas’ solution comes in.
One of the core services Bureau Veritas provides is a performance / reliability test service. This simulates real life
workload scenarios, identifies problems and allows the manufacturer to amend the design and reduce the likelihood
of returns through failure in the field. Bureau Veritas’ global lab network and international approvals team also
supports manufacturers in assessing the performance of wireless module integration as well as chemical & electrical
safety requirements and can help facilitate access to over 150 countries worldwide. They are also developing a
comparison test for large scale users such as retailers or manufacturers that benchmarks printers against
customizable performance criteria.
Another key area of concern for many retailers or consumers is the chemical safety of the product that is printed. In
support of this, Bureau Veritas has developed a suite of chemical testing services addressing markets worldwide that
verifies the chemical safety of the raw material as well as a factory chemical management system assessment
scheme to demonstrate excellent chemical controls.
Chris Baird, Director of Global Marketing at Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services commented, “3D Printing is
having an impact on all of our current businesses, indeed we are already planning for the advent of 4D printing.
However, with the growing maturity of the 3D Printing market and increasing usage scenarios, the supply chain is
facing different challenges, which Bureau Veritas’ new 3D Printing solution can overcome. Our global network,
knowledgeable staff and comprehensive service portfolio enables us to be the partner of choice for all players within
the 3D Printing supply chain who are looking to deliver performance, compliance and trust.”

Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services Supports
World Environment Day 2015
~ Supporting the WED Theme - “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” worldwide ~
Hong Kong, 4 June, 2015 – Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services has announced it
will again celebrate and support the World Environment Day (WED) on the 5th June. This is the
7th year that Bureau Veritas CPS has supported the WED initiatives throughout its worldwide
locations to encourage global awareness and actions for the environment.
The WED theme this year is “Seven Billion Dreams. One
Planet. Consume with Care.” To echo the WED theme,
BVCPS is launching a company-wide campaign with its
employees to take part in promoting responsible management
and consumption of the planet’s natural resources for the wellbeing of humanity, the environment, and the economy.
A series of Bureau Veritas’ activities scheduled to honor the WED around the world include:
“Think Before You Buy” Campaigns –– Bureau Veritas CPS Head Office in Hong Kong
arranged an event in early June to encourage its employees to consume and purchase less
through a used goods exchange. With the use of a redemption system, employees received a
token for used goods donated that was redeemable against other donated goods. All remaining
items following the 2-day event are to be donated to environmental associations for reuse or
recycling. Bureau Veritas’ locations in Greater China, South Asia and South East Asia are also
organizing various goods / books exchanges, donations, concerts, tree planation as well as many
WED educational activities to encourage reduction of consumables in daily life.
“Consume with Care” Initiatives – Bureau Veritas’ European locations including France,
Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and UK, are organizing various initiatives and competitions to
encourage employees to improve the environment by reducing the product and energy
consumables they use every day, at both the workplace and home. The competition initiated by
the UK marks the beginning of several waste reduction projects to be implemented, the success
of which will be measurable using Bureau Veritas’ carbon calculation tool.
“Personal Waste at Work Elimination” – In the US, Bureau Veritas’ Buffalo employees are
looking to reduce their “personal waste at work” by 90% on WED. This will be benchmarked
through the measurement of the weight of their daily “personal waste” in the workplace. The
reduction will be achieved through activities such as reduced consumption of paper towels, using
reusable containers for food and drinks, no frozen meals and no take-out food consumed in the
office.
2
“Car Pool to Work Day” – Additionally, the Buffalo employees will travel to work through prearranged car pool assignments on 5th June. With an objective of reducing by 2/3 the total number
of cars parking on WED, the activity helps reduce consumption of non-renewable fuel resources
as well as the amount of carbon dioxide contributing to global climate change. Other Bureau
Veritas locations also encourage employees to take public transportation to work on WED.
“Clean for a Better World” – Throughout Bureau Veritas locations worldwide, various clean-up
activities are being organized for the preservation of natural resources, these include:
In USA – continuing its 7th year of volunteering at the Tift Nature Preserve, Bureau Veritas’
Buffalo team will visit the Preserve to plant trees and shrubs as well as to remove invasive
species on 4th June, aiming at helping preserve the ecological balance of the Nature
Reserve.
In Hong Kong – employees from the CPS Head Office will go to Lantau Island to clean up
Cheung Sha Beach on 5th June.
In Taiwan – Bureau Veritas Taiwan Electrical & Electronics team’ employees, families and
friends will jointly go to YiLan to clean up waste disposed in the mountains by the hikers
on 7th June.
In Vietnam – Bureau Veritas’ employees and families will hold a “Small Action – Great
Impact” event on 7th June to help clean up waste disposed in the evening on Nguyen Hue
street, a popular social area in Ho Chi Minh City.
Oliver Butler, President of Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, commented: “As a
leading supply chain quality and sustainability solutions provider, we are again delighted to
participate in, and contribute to, these WED initiatives. Our solutions help our clients make
informed and responsible sourcing decisions, ultimately contributing to a sustainable sourcing
framework benefitting humanity, the environment, and the economy.”

Press Release
Smart Services and the IoT need systematic verification processes
With the Internet of Things (IoT) and its manifestations, like Industry 4.0, Smart Services,
M2M etc. a new era with significant opportunities begins.
But certain criticalities are involved in the IoT
 How to ensure the necessary, constant connectivity?
 What happens with data security and privacy?
 How to ensure, that services will be charged correctly?
To remove such concerns and ensure that the Smart Services within the IoT can
nevertheless be offered at an attractive price level is a real challenge. Standardizations
could help solve this problem, but they currently do not cover the full scope of requirements
that come with a complete Smart Services process. Instead, Smart Services providers bring
proprietary solutions to market, which have to be controlled continuously from development,
to operation up to the maintenance.
7layers is a specialist with years of experience in the wireless world. We offer the necessary
consultancy & engineering capabilities to capture and specify the requirements, set-up a risk
analysis process, develop proprietary quality policies and inform you about the official rules
& regulations your Smart Services may have to adhere to.
Structure complex IoT processes according to Smart Services elements and
requirements
With the 7layers InterLab® Software System you can structure complex IoT processes
according to the Smart Services elements involved and the requirements to be verified. To
get a clear overview about the manifold verification & validation processes involved, the
requirements are structured into




proprietary quality policies
official rules & regulations of regulatory bodies
regulations of industry interest groups
demands of suppliers to market
Once verified, the test results of the Smart Services elements under test will be analyzed
and any possible change requests can be managed directly within the InterLab® Software
System.
The more complex or crucial the Smart Services processes are, the more necessary it
becomes that Smart Services providers, manufacturers and distributors are able to trace
error sources and the way they have to be dealt with.
2
In order to develop a successful business, Smart Services provider must be able to
 convince their customers that the Smart Services they bring to market are safe and
reliable
 avert liabilities in case of malfunction of the Smart Services
Only stringent developing and verification processes, combined with reliable supporting
systems such as the InterLab® Software System enable providers of complex Smart
Services processes with up-to-date requirements, test specifications, traceable test results
and version numbered change requests.

Press Release
RF Challenges of Body Worn Wireless Devices
The wearable device market is growing, and user expectations are growing with it. However,
wearable devices have additional developmental challenges over standard IoT devices.
Typically they use crowded frequencies such as 2.4 GHz and face a variety of radio noise
environments. In most cases “wearables” are body worn devices, which differ from a
standard M2M device in so far as they have to overcome the radio interference from the
large variety of human bodies. This causes challenges to meeting consumer expectations
and market access requirements.
7layers has developed a service offering that can help manufacturers assess how their
devices will perform while on the body for both R&D and market access procedures.
Overcoming Human Interference of Wearables
A human isn’t friendly to wireless transmissions when next to the body and each person can
have different electrical properties. Device performance can plummet due to interference
from the human body. A device’s RF signal has to overcome the possibilities of the blood,
sweat and tears of the user. This difficulty can be surmounted through R&D processes,
utilizing human phantoms or live body testing.
7layers offers OTA testing with body phantoms, including a full body phantom, as well as
offering live body testing in an OTA reverberation chamber. All this helps engineering teams
considerably develop wearable products that really perform the way they should do when on
the body.
Overcoming Radio Noise Environments of Wearable Devices
A body worn device moves around more than the average wireless device and is exposed to
a variety of different radio environments.
This is a challenge for all devices that are part of the IoT. However, body worn devices have
a more unpredictable contact with interferers than most mobile devices as they can go
anywhere the customer can take it.
The Services for Wearables of 7layers
 simulate and measure interference from a variety of radio technologies
 measure the interference caused by the device itself
 test device performance in simulated wireless environments (e.g. moving about in a
city, traveling on a highway in an automobile)
2
7layers Involvement in the developing Wearable Industry
7layers is not only helping manufactures with testing wearable devices. We also actively
participate in the development of new standards. Clive Bax, Manager Radiated Laboratories
at 7layers, is the co-chair of the CTIA Wearable Sub-committee. Additionally, 7layers is a
member of organizations for various short-range wireless technologies such as the
Bluetooth® SIG, Zigbee, NFC Forum etc. along with the cellular technology organizations
such as GCF and PTCRB. Based on such participation, we offer deep insight in the
respective technology and its market access approvals.
This makes 7layers a sought after partner for wearable device manufacturers, providing:
 R&D testing
 Conformance testing
 Market access services.
through our laboratories in the USA (CA), Germany, P.R. China and S. Korea.

Press Release
7layers Prepares for CTIA Mandate with Market Leading A-GNSS Over
the Air (OTA) Test Solution
Sunnyvale, USA, 7 July, 2015 - 7layers, a Bureau Veritas company and an international group
of engineering and test centers for the wireless industry, has selected Spirent’s A-GNSS Over
the Air (OTA) test solution to enhance its location technology testing capabilities and prepare for
upcoming CTIA A-GNSS OTA test mandates. This collaboration comes at an important time as
the CTIA will be releasing version 3.5 of its OTA test plan requiring both A-GPS and AGLONASS in the second half of 2015 with the Spirent OTA test solution providing support for
both.
Conventional A-GNSS testing performed over a cabled RF connection provides a limited view of
GNSS performance, as it bypasses the mobile device’s antenna and associated circuitry. In
contrast, OTA testing introduces a controlled test setup in either an anechoic or reverberation
chamber that incorporates all interaction factors between the radio and the rest of the wireless
environment. This approach offers complete antenna characterization and performance analysis
required for critical location-based applications such as VoLTE E911 and for ensuring
compliance with both CTIA test plans and wireless operators’ device performance requirements.
“Spirent is helping to shape location test standards, and their strength in the OTA space directly
complements our commitment to providing leading-edge location test services to our customers”
said Fernando Rodriguez, Chief Operating Officer at 7layers. “Through this partnership, we
look forward to providing deeper insights into device performance, thereby enabling our
customers to successfully meet upcoming test requirements, such as those mandated by
CTIA A-GNSS OTA v3.5, in a timely fashion.”
“Spirent has been a long-standing contributor to the definition of Over The Air Test methodology
and the development of OTA test plans with various standards bodies. We see this as a critical
approach to evaluating services being deployed now and future services on the 5G
horizon where the form factor of wireless devices is evolving in areas such as Wearables
and Connected Car In-Vehicle Systems (IVS)”, said Saul Einbinder, vice president of
marketing for Wireless at Spirent Communications. “Working with 7layers, an expert in smart
device test environments, is an important step in adopting the A-GNSS OTA test methodology
and providing the industry with a lab equipped to enable accurate, repeatable, and uniform
location testing of wireless devices to ensure they meet the CTIA Certification standards.”
Backed by Spirent’s extensive expertise in positioning technologies, the 8100 LTS A-GNSS OTA
solution supports a wide range of radio access test areas and numerous GNSS systems
including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo. The design is based on flexibility of usage and allows
users to add test capabilities including automation as they need them.

Press Release
7layers extends Radio / EMC test capabilities with most modern Full
Anechoic Room
~ New full anechoic chamber for state of the art Radio / EMC testing opened by
7layers in Germany ~
Ratingen, Germany, 10 July, 2015 - To keep up with the continuously growing market
demands, 7layers, a specialist in validating devices and services based on wireless
connectivity, has extended its Radio / EMC test capabilities considerably. By setting up a
new Full Anechoic Room (FAR) we can offer our customers an extended and much more
flexible service, using the most modern EMC testing technologies with excellent absorption
and shielding capabilities. The new state of the art Full Anechoic Room, which has already
been validated, shows excellent shielding and absorption values. This way test projects can
run with extremely high accuracy and faster than ever before.
“Wireless connectivity is a pre-condition of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Smart
Services it offers”, explains Marco Kullik, Manager Radio & EMC Testing at 7layers. “To
keep up with this trend, more and more devices with integrated wireless connectivity are
coming to market. By integrating connectivity these devices become radio-devices, which
have to fulfill radio specific rules & regulations before entering the market. The larger the
number of such devices entering the market, the bigger the danger that amongst them there
are some that:



do not send out radio waves according to their specifications
interfere with other devices, or
do not effectively use the allocated spectrum.
This is why electromagnetic compatibility and Radio Spectrum Matters (ERM) is a core
capability of radio devices, and this is why regulatory bodies all over the world keep a
particularly strict eye on it.”
Covered Frequency Ranges
7layers 3m Full Anechoic Room (FAR from Albatross: www.albatross-projects.com) covers a
frequency range from 30 MHz to 40 GHz , thus being in accordance with the latest
international, EU and US standards for EMC testing and validation. The Radio / EMC
chamber is fitted out with both ferrite absorber tiles, which provide especially good
absorption capabilities in the lower frequency range and most modern pyramid absorbers
with excellent absorption rates in the range between 1 GHz to 40 GHz.
2
2.4 GHZ and 5 GHZ wireless device testing The new anechoic chamber is suitable for
devices working in the 2.5 GHz frequency band, which is used by many WLAN, Zigbee and
Bluetooth® devices, and for devices working in the 5 GHz frequency band (e.g. WLAN 5
GHz). The 5 GHz frequency band is increasingly popular for devices with integrated WLAN
technology, as it provides additional bandwidth and carries more non-overlapping channels
than the 2.4 GHz band. Due to the larger frequency range, bigger channel bandwidth are
possible, which allow significant higher data rates. This is e.g. used by the new WLAN
802.11 ac standard. Devices that have to be tested according to the following specifications
benefit especially from this extension of the 7layers labs:




EN 300 328 (Bluetooth, WLAN 2.4 GHz)
EN 301 893 (WLAN 5 GHz)
EN 301 511 (2G cellular)
EN 301 908 (3/4G cellular)…etc.
Fibre Optic Cable for remote control
In case a device under test only works in combination with a PC or tablet, the computer will
be controlled via a fiber optic cable from outside the chamber which results in less
interference and more accurate Radio/EMC measurements.
Signaling Units
Signaling units at 7layers cover 2G, 3G, 4G, WLAN, Bluetooth®, GPS and GLONASS.
Semi anechoic chamber also available at 7layers
In addition to the new, full anechoic chamber, the 7layers lab in Ratingen features a semi
anechoic chamber for emission measurements according to current and upcoming EMC and
Radio / EMC standards. With the additional installation of the new, state-of-the-art full
anechoic chamber, which is suitable for most of today’s wireless devices from sectors such
as M2M, automotive, smart home, wearables, medical etc. the 7layers Group has once
more shown its commitment to adapt to the growing requirements regarding Radio / EMC
testing, which are playing a crucial role in the upcoming Internet of Things.

7layers opens new EMC lab in Beijing
Beijing, 16 September 2015 - 7layers, an international group of engineering and test
centres for the smart world environment, has opened a further, extensive EMC laboratory in
Beijing, which has already been accredited by the end of August.
“The amount of wireless connected devices produced in China, that are to enter the global
market, increases continuously. This does not only encompass mobile phones but also the
large number of M2M devices, wearables, automotive infotainment products, m-health
devices and many more”, explains Yi Liang, 7layers Business Development Manager in
Beijing. “We have years of experience in supporting Chinese manufacturers of mobile
phones, Smartphones and other connected devices entering international markets by testing
according to the standards of industry interest groups such as PTCRB, GCF etc. By
extending our services with state-of-the-art EMC capabilities, we can now also offer testing
according to standards of regulatory bodies all over the world. This way we are bringing the
global market into easy reach of our Chinese customers, especially if we combine our
capabilities with the type approval and engineering services of other 7layers locations.”
7layers new EMC laboratory is in easy reach from Beijing International airport and Beijing
City Centre. The large, modern building features a 10 meter semi-anechoic chamber and a
3m fully anechoic chamber from TDK plus further shielded rooms and control rooms. The
accredited laboratory is fitted out with EMI, EMS, RSE, ESD and SAR test systems, offering
full coverage of GERAN, UTRAN and LTE carrier bands plus Bluetooth, WLAN and other
short range technologies. The laboratory offers test services in the frequency range between
30 MHz to 40 GHz and is in accordance with the latest international, EU and US standards
for EMC testing and validation. The 2.4 GHz frequency band is used by many WLAN,
ZigBee and Bluetooth® devices, and the 5 GHz frequency band is increasingly popular for
devices with integrated WLAN technology since it allows significant higher data rates. SAR
testing is required by many regulatory bodies worldwide and evaluates the relative safety of
low-power transmitters that are used within close proximity to the human body.
The new laboratory is a valuable extension of the 7layers services worldwide and especially
for our customers in China. The trend to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the increasing
number of smart services we already see in areas such as the connected car, smart cities,
industry automation etc. can only turn into a success for societies, if the increasing number
of essential requirements is carefully controlled. 7layers laboratories, managed with the
InterLab® software system, and enhanced with our engineering capabilities are set to
support manufactures of smart devices and other stakeholders of smart services processes
to succeed in this challenging and exiting market environment.

Latest Bluetooth RF Test Specification reduces test efforts
according to the 7layers BQTFs
About Bluetooth® qualification
The Bluetooth wireless technology allows convenient and secure connectivity over short
distances in smart devices such as mobile phones, laptops, medical devices, wearables,
smart home devices etc. To enable market access such Bluetooth devices have to meet
both regulatory and Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) requirements.
Complying with the Bluetooth SIG Qualification Program means that devices (end-products,
subsystems or components) meet a certain level of quality standards and interoperability.
This is necessary to obtain the Bluetooth trademark and a pre-condition of the intellectual
property license for using the Bluetooth technology.
7layers, a Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility (BQTF), is recognized by the Bluetooth SIG
as being competent to perform Bluetooth qualification tests, including RF tests, Protocol and
Profile Conformance tests and Profile Interoperability tests. In this role we keep a strict eye
on all changes to the test specifications that have to be followed when aiming for Bluetooth
Qualification.
New Bluetooth RF test specification becomes active
Today we would like to inform you, that by 14 October 2015 the Bluetooth RF test
specification 4.2.1 becomes active (according to TCRL 2015-1), with the most significant
change based on the test specification errata 6139. Due to this change, the requirements for
“extreme test conditions” have been reduced considerably:
So far
 16 test cases for Bluetooth Basic Rate and Bluetooth Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)
had to be performed under extreme test conditions regarding temperature and
voltage.
Now


All test cases covering testing under extreme voltage conditions have been removed.
Only 4 test cases remain that have to be assessed under extreme temperature
conditions, covering sensitivity and output power tests.
2
Consequences for Bluetooth device qualification
This reduction in required extreme condition testing further eases the Bluetooth Qualification
process and the market can now benefit from a growing amount of Bluetooth devices
coming to market ever more quickly.
However, manufacturers and suppliers should be aware that it is the Bluetooth member who
has the ultimate responsibility to ensure that the qualified product complies with the
Bluetooth specifications.
Passing the Bluetooth Qualification Process does not
automatically guarantee full compliance, as only certain aspects are being assessed.
Members who want to safeguard that their devices really satisfy end user requirements may
benefit from an extended quality assurance testing, 7layers can offer on demand.

Bureau Veritas Assists in Founding the Association for Professional Social
Compliance Auditors (APSCA)
~ The Association for Professional Social Compliance Auditors (APSCA) was created last month in an effort
to bring more credibility to auditors addressing working conditions around the world ~
Buffalo, NY, November 3, 2015 – The Association for Professional Social Compliance Auditors
(APSCA) was created to ensure the professionalism, consistency and credibility of individual
auditors and organizations performing independent social compliance audits, and to promote the
use of independent social compliance audits, as a tool to advance workplace conditions for
workers globally. The APSCA certification process will ensure auditors have consistent training,
education, background checks, and demonstrated competencies that are standard requirements
in comparable professional auditor associations.
Social compliance audits, often conducted by third party auditing firms, are one of the tools used
by multinational organizations to assess supply chain facilities’ and farms’ compliance with local
and international expectations of labor conditions. A result of a year’s effort on the part of leading
social compliance auditing firms, including Arche Advisors, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, RINA, SGS,
TUV Rheinland, TUV Sud, and UL, APSCA has been created to meet industry needs as supply
chains become increasingly global and while hundreds of thousands of social compliance audit
reports are already in circulation.
“Today, working conditions around the world are increasingly scrutinized by consumers and
media, and multinational organizations are expecting more transparency from their suppliers.
However, social compliance audits performed to-date are inconsistent.” said Roger Brockway of
the International Federation of Inspection Agencies (IFIA), a major sponsor of APSCA.
“As challenges for workers around the world continue to evolve, and companies’ Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) needs continue to expand, it is more important than ever to bring
consistency to the social compliance auditing industry. Companies and workers throughout the
2
world rely on the oversight provided by social compliance audits, and APSCA endeavors to
provide a leading level of assurance.”
APSCA welcomes applicants to register for APSCA certification starting January 1st, 2016.
Primarily focusing on members from the social compliance auditing industry, APSCA will later
include other types of auditors such as internal auditor staff from brand or retailer organizations.
Additionally, as the association expands, APSCA is actively seeking an executive director to lead
this initiative, and is also currently forming an executive and stakeholder board to be fully
functional in the coming weeks.

Wireless Power Charging
There is a clear trend within the automotive market towards integrating wireless power
charging trays into car consoles, armrests etc. This is a promising development that will
reduce the hassle of fiddling with cables and a variety of plugs in order to charge mobile
devices on the go.
CE4A uses the Qi wireless power charging technology
For this initiative, the German auto consortium CE4A has chosen the Qi technology as one
of the preferred wireless charging standards. Qi technology is being developed and
maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). There is already a large variety of
mobile-device models on the market that support the Qi technology standard. With the
automotive industry’s support, this trend will make interoperability issues a thing of the past
and turn “wireless power charging on the move” into something we will take for granted in
the not too distant future.
http://www.makezens.com/blog/automotive-industry-embraced-wireless-charging/
However, both wireless power transmitters and receivers have to be tested in
accordance with regulatory and industry interest groups requirements.
7layers has been involved in testing wireless charging devices for several years, especially
for the mobile phone and Smartphone industry. As a test & certification services provider for
leading automotive industry suppliers, 7layers has gained an outstanding level of experience
in this sector. Pooling these experiences enables us to offer extremely effective support to
the automotive industry for the integration of wireless power charging into their new models.
Benefit from 7layers services when developing wireless power charging transmitters
and receivers

Regulatory testing and certification
Wireless power charging testing

In addition to this, the automotive industry is also working on an even more
spectacular promise!

The industry is already working on electric and hybrid cars that will be charged via wireless
power – in special parking areas or even AS THEY DRIVE on specially equipped roads. You
can read more about this at:

Even if it takes a while until we can drive along the motorway almost like a perpetuum
mobile – 7layers is keeping an eye on this trend and could support the industry when it
comes to developing the necessary test set-ups, specifications and test services.

NEWS RELEASE
Bureau Veritas partners with Onward Security Corporation
to launch Security Assessment Service in Taiwan
Taipei, Taiwan, 2 December, 2015. Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing & certification of
technology products, and Onward Security, a leading brand in security assessment solutions,
have partnered to offer network product security assessment solutions.
There are many publicly available research reports available covering the challenges around
information security; some chart the cost per data breach at around $4 million USD per company,
others that 70% of all organizations will experience a breach in 2015. Understandably, consumers,
board members and the C-suite are no longer ignoring the dramatic impact a data or information
breach has on company reputation, never mind the bottom line or opportunity cost.
As such, an all-embracing approach to product security is essential to the safe and secure
operation of an organization’s information technology (IT) systems. By applying techniques such
as penetration test, reverse engineering and fuzzing test; organizations can identify and assess
the vulnerabilities of their products, and ultimately systems and networks, and take steps to
improve their overall security. In support of this increasing challenge, Bureau Veritas and Onward
Security’s portfolio of security assessment services includes:
Vulnerability
Assessment
•
Identification, quantification, and prioritization (or ranking) of the
vulnerabilities in an IT system or product.
•
A planned software attack on a computer system in a test environment
that assesses security weaknesses, potentially gaining access to the
computer's features and data helping determine:
o whether a system is vulnerable to attack
o if the defenses were sufficient, and,
o which defenses (if any) the test defeated.
•
The provision of invalid, unexpected, or random data to the inputs of a
computer program. The hardware/software is then monitored for
exceptions such as crashes, failing built-in code assertions or potential
memory leaks.
•
A series of tests with the objective of verifying that the servers aren't
susceptible to a denial of service attack. A common test is to simulate
the saturation of the servers through sending vast amounts of requests
to the web application.
Penetration
Test
Fuzzing Test
Denial of
Service Test

Mr. Lancelot Su, Vice President of Bureau Veritas CPS in Taiwan stated, “Both technology
product designers/manufacturers, as well as users such as telecoms carriers and retailers in Asia,
will benefit from our new security assessment solution. We have played an important role for type
approval certification for Electrical and Electric products for many years. However, with the rapid
growth of Network and Internet of Things devices, the need for stronger information security has
become more varied and complicated. Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC)
expects that by the end of 2015 there will be technical standards to assess against for software
built in mobile phones to better safeguard consumers’ personal information and privacy. Our cooperation with Onward Security Corporation complements our total solution and will further
enhance our customers’ device security and stability.”
Mr. Morgan Hung, General Manager of Onward Security Corporation added: “The global
manufacturer of networking products is facing a continuing and serious challenge around
information security. We have many years’ experience with professional information security
assessment skills and experience. We have successfully assisted several local and overseas
manufacturers / suppliers to improve their product quality and information security, reduce repair
costs, as well as help meet relevant foreign regulations & information security requirements.
Under our partnership with Bureau Veritas, we are integrating and optimizing the resources from
both companies to provide both security and quality assurance to manufacturers and users of
networking products.”
