By Linda Meyer and Debra Levy
he 24th Floating Homes Tour was held on Saturday, September
26th and what a tour it was! We could not have asked for more
perfect weather. Actually, the heat surprised most of the visitors
arriving from across the Bay. From start to finish the docks had visitors
in couples and small groups walking through the twenty boats, and by
the end of the day we had played host to just over 1,000 visitors. The
day felt much like a party, from set up at 8 am to the clean up at 4 pm,
hanks to the outstanding
work of the chairs, their
committees and the huge
number (about 200!) of volunteers, we had yet another terrific
Floating Homes Tour (see the
article on this page.) I’ve written before about the substantial
benefits of volunteerism in general, and this tour really personalizes those benefits.
In fact, this year’s tour resulted in even greater benefits
than usual, both for the floating homes community, and for
Southern Marin. Continuing our
“good neighbor” policy, FHA
was able to make generous donations to both the Marin City
Library and the Family Service
Agency.
A number of really important
benefits for our floating homes
community directly relate to the
success of this tour. Here are the
main ones:
Disaster Preparedness
FHA has budgeted $12,000
to improve our ability to help
ourselves in emergencies. First,
we purchased two new radios
for each dock in Kappas, Yellow Ferry, Commodore and
Waldo Point Harbors. These

with the overall tone of the day being one of good humor and cooperation. We had over 200 people actively
volunteer in making this an incredibly smooth running
and fun tour. We are still amazed that we were able to
be part of such a wonderful experience.
Behind the Scenes
The tour began over seven months ago with a committee planning and dividing up
the tasks. Some tasks needed doing
far in advance and others were arranged to come together on the day
of the Tour. These tasks included:
finding boat owners to open their
homes; arranging docents and
dock monitors; contacting newspapers, magazines and web sites;
posting flyers advertising the tour;
designing, writing and printing the
program, including ads and photos of each open home; selling ads
to local merchants to pay for the
program; making the signs for the
homes and for the visitors to find
their way around the tour; finding
and organizing the large number
of volunteers to work on tour day;
renting port-a-potties; contacting
food providers; hiring shuttle buses; arranging traffic coordinators to
direct visitors; finding musicians
to play on tour day; cleaning up at
the end of the day and many more details. Whew! It
sounds like a lot.
Now let us tell you the good news. When the
tasks were divided among the people on the committee it hardly seemed like work at all. We have never
worked with a more professional and giving group of
volunteers as the people on this year’s tour commit-
tee. Sure, the tour brought in money for the Floating
Home Association and happily allowed us enough extra to make generous donations to the Friends of the
Marin City Library and the Family Services Agency
of Southern Marin, helping others in our local community as well as ourselves. But the best part was
working with the committee. We got a chance to meet
wonderful people we might not have met in any other
context. Even though we won’t be able to direct the
tour next year, we definitely want to be on the committee again just to be part of such an awesome group!
We have to say that being actively
involved gave us a greater sense
of belonging to this unique community. Plus, it was fun! So
we highly recommend to all to be
involved in the planning and on
the committee for the next tour.
Don’t hesitate to volunteer. Even
if you can only give a little time,
every bit will be appreciated and
is valuable. We know we could
have used more people on the
planning committee. The more
people taking a part, the lighter
the load will be. You’ll definitely see us there!
This brings us to next year. We
need someone to step up and take
on the task of being the Chair for
the Tour Committee very soon.
Katherine, the previous Tour
Director kept such great records
Photo by Linda Meyer and has laid out a time line which
is simple to follow. Her timeline
and notes made this an incredibly easy task to put together. Whoever is interested please contact Lewis
Shireman at 415-331-8325. Please think about what
you can do for your community and consider volunteering as the coordinator for this very important event.
And remember, we need enough committee heads to
start the process off. So please, those of you who now
volunteer on the day of the tour, consider volunteering
for a committee head. Each committee should consist
of two people to run smoothly. We need a chairman
by the annual meeting on February 27, 2010. That is
when recruitment starts for the next year’s Floating
Homes Tour.
Thank you from Linda
I want to take this opportunity to thank the outstanding people on the Tour Committee. You made
the whole process sooooooooo much easier than it
could have been. If I could have I would have named
the baby after all of you. :) A special thank you goes
to all the homeowners who opened their homes. You
are the reason we can have a tour. Everyone I talked
to was just blown away by the fantastic homes they

Water you doing here? By the Dinghy Dame
M
alinda Macey was born and raised in Indiana
and says she’s still an Indiana girl at heart.
Majoring in Sociology and Psychology, she
graduated from Indiana University and then worked
as a secretary for the director of the Physical Therapy
Department at the University Medical Center. She had
some cousins who had moved out here, and when they
went home to visit they enticed Malinda sufficiently
to pack up her Toyota and drive out here all by herself
(except for the few hitch-hikers she picked up along
the way.) She is a brave heart. ‘Twas 1969 when she
arrived, and because, she says, luck has always found
her, she landed a job as a receptionist with McCann
Erickson as soon as she arrived. While working there
she met and became good friends with a daughter in
the Del Monte clan who went to France to study at the
Cordon Bleu School of Cooking. When she returned,
she taught Malinda everything she knew and asked her
to become her assistant. Life was good. Malinda was
cooking, living with the Mayor of Corte Madera and
got herself inerested in politics.
When her cooking partner moved, and her relationship broke up, Malinda decided to go to Cosmotology school. She ended up travelling all over the U.S.
teaching classes for all the big department stores with
beauty salons. She did this for 15 years before she
ventured out on her own (surprise, surprise) got her
own loft and did make-up and hair. She was even the
hairdresser and make-up artist for the 49er cheerleaders!
The next chapter of her life took her to Potrero Hill
with her cat, Sam Sweet Perfect. She would call him
nightly, and her neighbor Tom (her hubby of 15 years
now) would hear her and wondered who that crazy
woman was. He managed to meet her when he had
a garage sale and she needed help carrying her purchases home.
On top of all the other creative things she was doing, Malinda loved art and dabbled in many aspects
of it. When her friends urged her to take her art more
seriously she began to make hand painted T-shirts and
sold them to Macys. She also made spirit dolls out of
innovative things she found. And while that was satisfying, she says she didn’t feel “certified”.
Around this time she and Tom, who was born in
Mill Valley, moved to Pt. Reyes. Tom is an on-site
construction manager/supervisor and worked for Lucas overseeing the construction of the Archives Building and the Recreation Center, among others. While in
Pt. Reyes, Malinda became impassioned with gardening . She has great fun doing whatever she chooses,
and she does it well. She likens her whole life to a
vacation.
Malinda took Tom back to Indiana and the Indy
500. That’s when he decided it would be fun to move
there. So they packed up their dog, Pearl, 2 cats, 3
ducks, a parrot, a cockatiel, and a bunny named bunbun. They actually drove to Indiana with all those

pets, with the exception of the ducks (which they ate)
just kidding! They all lived inside with them and they
interacted just like in the movies and it was always so
funny around them. Says Malinda, “I’m sure someday we’ll have another animal family...we both are
crazy about them.”
They moved back to San Francisco for awhile,
where Malinda was a private dinner chef for a family
of four, but 13 years ago moved to Main Dock where
they rented for 2 1/2 years before finding a home to
call their own in the Co-Op, where they still reside
today. Their home is as colorful as Malinda, and her
art abounds. Although I didn’t get to meet Tom, I got
to see his handy-work in their renovations. He currently is overseeing the building of a village in China.
When he is home, they enjoy rowing about in their
skiff, reading, or enjoying their view with their black
cat, Gypsy.
After moving to the community, Malinda decided
to pursue her art interests and went to the College of
Marin for three years. She told me her first and favorite class under Chester Arnold was great. They used
materials and techniques of the 15th century artists
and made their own paints. Her art was good enough
to be accepted in the college art show for three years
in a row. She then opened a studio in Sausalito, which
she has since closed down.
She has spent the past three years teaching herself
Spanish and spends a bit of time in Costa Rica helping families less fortunate than she. They stay in a remote area on the Carribean coast 11 miles north of
Panama where the beach is uncluttered and the waters
are calm.
Wherever she lands, Malinda surrounds herself with
color. She is an intelligent colorful woman herself and
I thank her for allowing me to get to know her better.

o you have a problem with cats? As lovely and
sweet as they are, do you have to deal with
them using your planters as litter boxes and
trashing your plants? Well, here’s a way to say “scat”
and protect your plants once and for all.
Emptying the Holding Tank
By Flo Hoylman
I
n addition to the storm damage, the Floating Homes
Community suffered its longest power outage in at
least 25 years last January. One major inconvenience during this period was the inability to flush our
toilets, since our holding tanks must be emptied by
electronic pumps, or they will overflow.
Plumber Michael (Pump-A-Turd) Peterson recommends that when the power goes out, homeowners
should go onto the dock and turn off their water, so
we can’t possibly make the mistake of flushing or running any other water until the juice goes back on. As
Michael puts it, “the inconvenience of turning off your
water is far less than the hassle of cleaning up after an
overflow.”
There is, however, another possibility. When we
have some warning that an outage may occur (as we
did with several mini-outages before the big January
blackout), you can empty your tank in advance. Most
holding tanks hold 30+ gallons of waste water, and the
average flush of a low-flow toilet is less than 2 gallons.
So an empty tank could accommodate a dozen flushes
– or more if you’re feeling brave.
Go online to the Gardener’s Supply Company and
order Cat Scat. These molded mats have flexible plastic spikes that are harmless but effective, and your
plants can grow up through the openings. We first used
them last year, and the kitties have all moved on to
more welcoming venues. We have no financial interest
in this company or the product, but wanted to share
its 100% effectiveness with you. If you’re interested,
here’s the link:
Here’s how to do it. Some newer pumps have a
remote switch which allows you to turn it on manually. Otherwise, find the power cord for your holding tank’s pump. Notice that there are two cords attached to a tandem plug (see accompanying photos).
The “A” plug goes into the socket and powers the the
holding tank float switch, while the “B” plug powers
the pump. Remove the “A” plug, separate them, and
insert the “B” plug directly into the socket. That will
activate the on-off device.
Let the pump run a few seconds until you hear a
“whoosh” when it’s completely empty. Then reverse
the procedure and insert the “A” plug back in the
socket, then the “B” plug into the “female” portion of
the first one.
It might be a good idea to practice this procedure so
you can do it smoothly in a blackout.
http://www.gardeners.com/Safe-CatDeterrent/31-954,default,pd.html#
One handy hint: be sure to not leave an unprotected
area large enough for cats to stand, or they will avoid
the spikes and do their business in the open area. You
might be buying more mats than you’d like, but they
last for years, and you only have to install them once.

new, high-tech radios will make it possible to coordinate emergency response from dock-to-dock,
plus improve our ability to send messages up to the
County Emergency Operations Center to secure
fire, law enforcement and medical assistance.
And, we are greatly expanding our emergency
equipment cache. CERT Supervisor Ray Dunaway
is now working to purchase and outfit a new disaster
trailer that will be used as a command post and will
contain pumps, generators, lighting, pry bars, communications and first aid equipment and supplies. The
$11,000.00 budgeted for this equipment will allow us
to be much more self-sufficient, while we await help
from county responders (we must remain mindful that
all the streets surrounding our community are built on
140 feet of bay mud fill, so it may not be easy for the
emergency responders to get to us quickly, when the
Big One arrives).
Dock Activities Funds: Thanks to the excellent
revenues from the tour, we have reinstituted funding
for activities on all our docks, at $10 per berth. At the
discretion of the Dock Reps, these funds can be used
for whatever members want, whether doing things like
improving landscaping containers, or for dock parties
throughout the year and at holiday time. Enjoy!
Annual Member Party: No worries about the budget for the party this year.
So, thanks again to Co-Chairs Debra Levy, Linda
Meyer, the members of their Tour Committee and to
all of you who turned out to make the tour such a big
success. You guys are The Best!
Happy Holidays.

got to see and left with a greater understanding of our
unique community. To all the volunteers who put
in hours on tour day: a big thank you! Each of you
played an important part in the day’s success. And to
Debra Levy, my co-director of this year’s tour, what
can I say? You are amazing and I’m so glad you called
the wrong Linda to ask if I wanted to co-chair the tour
with you. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world!
Thank you from Debra
Hello everyone and thank you for all your participation in making the 2009 Floating Home Association
Tour a success. I can say watching the whole community come together on the day of the event was remarkable. Linda and I had a wonderful time co-chairing
the event; we enjoyed meeting and working with all of
you. We sure are very lucky to live in such a special
place, a place we can call a community. We could not
have pulled this off if it were not for all the people
who volunteered for the committee heads, many of the
same people working hard year after year, thank you
for all of your support; for the 20 homeowners who
graciously offered their floating homes to share with
all the visitors, thank you for your support; for the 200
plus volunteers who helped us on the day of the tour
and for the local entertainment who filled the day with
music, thank you for your support. Thanks for making
this such a memorable experience. I would also like to
thank Linda Meyer, my co-director, because working
together with her on the tour made the process seem
seamless and made the experience very enjoyable. I
look forward to helping the next year’s tour director,
by being a part of one of the committees. So please
volunteer to be the Tour Director and volunteer for a
committee early on to help the process along. Hope to
see you all again next year; until then, Happy Holidays
and warm wishes for a Happy New Year.

CERT News
Winter is on the way. Are you ready?
A message from your CERT team.
By Ray Dunaway
L
iving on the docks is a wonderful experience,
even with 100 MPH winds causing smashed
ramps, snapped pilings and blowing roofs off.
The best way to avoid problems is to be ready before
the wind and high tides hit by taking a few simple
steps.
First, every year have your lines checked and adjusted or replaced as necessary. There are several qualified, experienced people who live on the docks and
will perform this service for a small fee. At the same
time they can inspect your pilings to determine if they
need to be replaced or repaired.
Second, inspect your boat and tie down any loose
items such as tables and chairs or other items that will
blow away.
Third, make any necessary repairs to your boat to
keep the wind and rain from getting under the roof and
ripping it off.
Fourth, have enough emergency supplies (water,
food, etc.) to go for 7 days without power or access
to a grocery store. If you have questions about what
should be in your emergency kit, attend a “Get Ready
Marin” class to learn how to prepare for an emergency or go to http://www.getreadysouthernmarin.org/
resources.html to get lists of items you should have
when the power is out or for survival in an emergency.
In addition to the items on the previously mentioned
lists there are other items you should have because
you are on a floating home. These are: bilge pumps,
spare mooring line, and knee high rubber boots. Know
where your domestic water supply shutoff is located.
You do not want your septic tank overflowing from a
water leak if the power is out.
Fifth, check with your neighbors and see who is
CERT trained so you know who to call for help.
Sixth, get a tide book from the FHA and pay attention to the high tides and where you park so your vehicles are not inundated. Every year at least one vehicle
is totaled because of being flooded in the parking lot.
If you want more information or have six people or
more who want a Get Ready class, contact Ray Dunaway at rdunaw@attglobal.net.
