The holiday season is upon us, so it’s time to mentally prepare yourself for what lies ahead.
Over the next few months, your sanity will be tested repeatedly. From long lines at stores
for toys you don’t even understand, to sitting in traffic while traveling to see family you
don’t even want to see, it’s going to be tough. Adding to that stress is the never-ending
task of trying to get the best deals for things you want to buy. This is certainly a year-round
annoyance, but it can be especially frustrating during the holidays. But don’t let it beat you.
Holiday promotions can make your life easier if you just dedicate a little time to figuring
things out.
Retailers know that you’ll be looking for more products during the holiday season, so
they know you’ll be more tempted by deals and coupons. There’s a reason your inbox is
being flooded with all sorts of offers this time of year. But with so much going on, it can
be difficult to figure out what coupon is actually going to save you money and what deal
is actually a deal. Pretty soon you’re so delirious you’re telling your cat jokes about “the
purrrr-fect discount.”
Don’t be discouraged. It happens to all of us. The key to avoiding holiday deal overload
is patience. Make a list of what you want to buy well ahead of when you set foot in the
store, so you’re not tempted by low prices on things your recipients don’t need or want.
Then take some time to figure out where the items you want to buy are located (either
online or in stores); and narrow your focus to deals from those places. Also, if you’re going
to be traveling, do some research and see if you’ll be around those stores and what their
discounts will be. Then pour over the details of those deals. If need be, travel with coupons.
Another way to make holiday deals work for you is to see what deals can be connected
to other deals. For example, USA Today cited a deal by Kroger. The chain was offering four
times the points for gas discounts if a person purchased gift cards during a limited time. The
person in the scenario knew that they were going to buy something from Best Buy, so they
purchased a Best Buy gift card at Kroger, and scored a ton of points for discounts on gas.
She then used those discount points to save almost $150 on gas, and still bought the item
from Best Buy.
Every little bit of savings helps during the holidays, but you’ve got to be willing to put
in some time to sort through all the madness. If you do, you’ll be able to say “Happy
Holidays!” to people and actually mean it.
