Advisement
Due to the many, and sometimes changing, requirements for certification, advisement of students is a very important process in the College of Education. Because of this, students enrolled in a teacher preparation program may not utilize the self advisement process. All students in teacher preparation programs should meet with and obtain approval from their advisor in order to register for courses.
Certification
Our certification officer, Julie Gray (jgray@aug.edu) will hold a meeting towards the end of your last semester and you will complete all the paperwork needed for certification. She will submit the completed documents along with a certified transcript. After all the paperwork has been submitted, it usually takes about six weeks to receive your certification in the mail.
Graduate Portfolios
All e-portfolios must be submitted in Livetext to the designated port by the end of the 13th week of the semester the student plans to graduate. Portfolios are your personal artifacts aligned with the ten Conceptual Framework
Principals. These artifacts can include but are not limited to course assignments, lesson plans, reflections, teacher evaluations, student work samples, etc. The portfolio will be completed in a template on Livetext.
•
Q: How will my portfolio be evaluated?
•
A: You will submit it via Livetext to your University Supervisor or advisor (see answer below) and they will use the Initial Certification Rubric to assess it. You can view your portfolio scores in
Livetext.
•
Q: When are portfolios due and to whom do I submit it?
•
A: If it is your final semester in our program, your portfolio is due to your University Supervisor towards the end of your practicum experience (usually two weeks before your final day in the school). Your University Supervisor will determine the date for evaluation. If you still have classes to complete during the summer, your portfolio is due to your advisor by the date posted on our website. It is your responsibility to be certain that your portfolio has been submitted.
•
Q: What is GACE?
•
A: The acronym GACE represents the Georgia Assessments for the Certification
ISL
The Augusta State University Impacting Student Learning (ISL) is an assessment that begins in the August
Experience and is completed during apprenticeship to demonstrate impact on student learning. The following document includes the sections, rationales, processes, and products for the 6 components of the ASU-ISL. There are several definitions that will help you to understand our materials: http://www.aug.edu/teacher_development/forms/ISL%20document.pdf
Graduation
Graduation paperwork must be submitted to your advisor by midterm of the semester prior to graduation. NOTE: If you are graduating in the fall, you must submit your application the spring semester before as faculty is not available in the summer to process your application.
Practicum Applications
All practicum applications must be received by your advisor by MIDTERM of the semester PRIOR to practicum. A
$200 practicum fee will be assessed (along with your tuition) to provide a stipend for your Mentor Teacher and travel expenses for your University Coordinator. Students must complete their practicum during their last semester and can have no more than two classes remaining. Students must have successfully completed EDTD 6364 and
EDTD 6491 prior to practicum.
Students are NOT to contact schools regarding possible apprenticeship and/or practicum placements. Our department has a system in place to ensure appropriate placements are made.
NOTE: All field experiences and practicum teaching must be within 50 miles of ASU. Field experiences and practicum teaching must be in the area of certification candidate is seeking.
The practicum is the student teaching portion of the degree and is a required course for the MAT program. You will spend one semester (75 full school days) teaching under a current professional in a local school district. You will develop lesson plans and teach almost a full semester as though you were actually hired. You MUST take the course to graduate, but if you are currently teaching, you may remain at your current job to do the practicum as long as you are employed within 50 miles of ASU. If you ARE NOT employed as a teacher, ASU will make a placement for you at one of the Professional Development Schools.
You may only take two classes along with your practicum and you must have already successfully completed EDTD
6364 (Integrated Curriculum) and EDTD 6491 (Management). http://www.aug.edu/teacher_development/practicum.htm
Employment
Are you looking for a job or internship? If yes, check your ASU CareerLink ! If you are in need of employment options that may also provide field experience credit, ASU's Career Center may be able to help you! Visit ASU's
Career Center's web site for information on additional opportunities: www.aug.edu/career_center

Field Experiences
All graduate students must complete a total of 300 hours of field experience in three separate settings (not counting practicum) by the end of their coursework. If students are employed as teachers or paraprofessionals in a school, they will complete their field experience requirements in their classroom, but will still be responsible for three settings.
NOTE: All field experiences and practicum teaching must be within 50 miles of ASU. Field experiences and practicum teaching must be in the area of certification candidate is seeking.
All necessary forms and further information can be found at. http://www.aug.edu/teacher_development/fieldexperience.htm

Only a grade of C or better will be counted as successful completion of a course for the graduate program. A grade of D or less will be counted in the cumulative GPA but must be repeated.
•
Probation: A student who fails to maintain the required average will be placed on academic probation. In order to remain in the graduate program, the student must reestablish the grade point average of 3.0 during the next semester of enrollment.
•
Suspension: A student on probation who is unable to remediate the grade point average after one semester will be placed on academic suspension for a period of one semester.
•
Reinstatement: A student may be reinstated after one semester of academic suspension. •
Dismissal from the Graduate Program: If a student is suspended for the second time, the student will be dismissed from the graduate program. EDTD classes are 8 weeks long.
Most SPED, and secondary elective classes are the full semester. NOTE: SPED 4002 has a separate 30 hours lab component.
Classes are usually offered at 5:30pm or after, except in the summer. Note: there are a few exceptions.
Classes are usually one day a week except for secondary electives.
Most classes are offered every semester except for the required classes that are not offered by the education department.
Online classes can sometimes be taken for an additional charge of $600 per class.
Course schedules can be found at www.aug.edu/infocentral/
See secondary elective advisor within 6 weeks.
Secondary electives are offered at various times and schedules.
Secondary electives are often a complete semester long.

SPED students have several classes to choose from for their first semester.
SPED students will need to come in and see me individually to work out a personalized course rotation.
There is an official order which SPED classes are to be completed, so it is important that students see me each semester to keep on track.
The first two classes to be taken for all concentrations except Special Ed. and KNHS are EDTD 6364 and EDTD
6491.
If you would like to take more than two classes in the first semester then we can choose additional classes together.
It is worth noting that if you are an Early Childhood Ed. student then taking MATH 5241 within the first 2 semesters is recommended, as it is a prerequisite to all other math classes.

Education Students have their own ASU Career
Advisor, Ms. Melissa Hudson.
I would recommend making an appointment with Ms.
Hudson during the program.
She also gives instructional seminars that are very helpful to job seekers.
Public Safety wishes me to tell you that there should be no unattended children left on campus. All children must be within eyeshot of their parent at all times.
Keep in mind that students who entered the program prior to your acceptance may have different requirements towards graduation. If you hear rumors about program changes, requirements or anything else. Please take the time to ask me. I have the most accurate and up to date information available.
