70th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy welcome to all veterans 1 These beautiful and deeply moving images of solidarity must help us guide young generations and make them understand how precious peace and liberty are to mankind. I welcome you all and wish you a pleasant stay in Caen. 70 years ago, one of the greatest battles of the history of mankind began. For nearly 100 days, from the Landings on the Normandy beaches on June the 6th 1944 to the liberation of Le Havre on September the 12th, the fate of Normandy was closely linked to that of the world. 10 For all of you, veterans or civilian witnesses, for your children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, returning to these places of remembrance and contemplation is emotionally moving, sometimes difficult. On behalf of all Caen inhabitants, may I insist on expressing our deepest gratitude and admiration. Today, Normandy prepares, once again, to attract the attention of the community of nations, to pay a vibrant and solemn tribute to all men and women who contributed to its liberation, but also to celebrate the great fervour for reconciliation following the Second World War. The American, British, Canadian, French and German veterans, the numerous civilians as well as their descendants, can now celebrate peace with the same emotion. 1 3 10 11 12 17 COMMEMORATIVE DIVING SESSIONS < From May to September 4www.caenplongee.org 3 12 2 4 5 13 14 3 4 5 6NormanD-Day 11 12 13 8 10 2 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 14 15 16 17 18 19 14 15 16 1 17 10 18 19 www.caen-tourisme.fr - 02 31 27 14 14 Prices: 4.5€ - 6€ / free for children under 6 years old. 4 5 6 13 14 15 EXHIBITION ON THE HISTORY OF 1 THE UNIVERSITY OF CAEN, BEFORE AND 2 DURING THE BATTLES OF THE SECOND 3 WORLD WAR. 9 8 7 < From 15th of May to 18th of July4 19 17 16 Square 18 Camille Blaisot 5 Free admission 6 7 8 9 10 15 19 1 7 2 1 10 2 11 3 12 4 13 5 14 3 4 5 6 12 13 14 15 1 16 EXHIBITION « SHOTS OF WAR »17 8 < End of May to December 9 18 2 Mémorial 3 4 5 de 9 6 Caen 8 7 19 10 An exhibition by Tony Vaccaro, soldier 11 12 13 14 15 17 16 18 19 11 photographer, chronicles the daily and life12on the war front through 100 exceptional photographs. 13 www.memorial-caen.fr 021431 06 06 44 EXHIBITION « THE 100 OBJECTS OF 16 THE 100 DAYS OF THE BATTLE OF 17 NORMANDY » < E18nd of May to December 4 5 de 2 Mémorial 9 6 Caen 8 7 19 3 100 objects, and military, 13 14 both 11 12 15 civilian 17 16 18 19 each one with a story to tell about the 100 days of the Battle of Normandy. www.memorial-caen.fr 02 31 06 06 44 8 9 10 Subject to the number of seats available. www.dday-normandy1944.com 12 11 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 10 11 GUIDED TOURS* « SUMMER 1944: 8 CAEN POPULATION AMIDST THE 9 BOMBINGS. Scriptorium City Hall During the summer of 1944, the Abbayeaux-Hommes and Saint-Etienne abbey church were transformed into a field hospital. Many civilians took shelter from the bombings in these buildings. Nearly 3500 people lived here in early July, and over 8000 by mid-July on the eve of the liberation of the city’s left bank. Thousands of Caen inhabitants lived here for nearly 40 days with the help of the French Red Cross teams and of the « Défense passive », rescue organization whose aim was to defend the civilian population without using weapons. The City Hall – more specifically the Lycée Malherbe at that time – was turned into a shelter for the civilians and a base for the « D éfense passive ». Life had to go on, e.g. with the nursery, cooking, care for patients…, as artillery shells fell from time to time on the building.
